Chapter 6: The Fire Within
Mira’s legs felt like lead, her breaths coming in sharp, shallow gasps. The remnants of golden energy crackled at her fingertips, fading as quickly as they had come. The arena was eerily silent, save for the rhythmic pounding of her own heartbeat. She had done it. She had won.
Or so she thought.
The walls of the arena shuddered, runes flickering wildly as if something deep within the stone was awakening. Mira’s relief evaporated, replaced by a new wave of tension.
Kai stepped beside her, his stance rigid. “This isn’t over.”
Nyla’s voice echoed overhead. “Good, you survived. But can you endure?”
The runes pulsed one final time before the ground beneath them gave way.
Mira barely had time to react before she was falling—again.
---
She landed hard, sand slipping through her fingers as she scrambled to her feet. The arena was gone. Instead, she found herself in an expansive cavern, the air thick with the scent of earth and something acrid, something burning. The only light came from eerie blue flames lining the jagged walls.
“Where are we?” Mira muttered, brushing dust from her clothes.
Kai stood beside her, scanning their surroundings. “Somewhere worse than before.”
A deep rumble rolled through the cavern, shaking the ground. Mira stiffened. “What was that?”
Kai didn’t answer. He was already moving, eyes locked onto the massive archway ahead. Runes similar to the ones in the arena were carved into its stone, but these pulsed red, as if warning them to stay away.
“We should move,” Kai said. “Now.”
Mira hesitated but followed. As they approached the archway, the heat intensified. The blue flames flickered wildly, reacting to their presence. The rumbling sound returned, louder this time, closer.
Then, the creature emerged.
It was unlike anything Mira had ever seen—a massive, reptilian beast with obsidian scales that shimmered in the firelight. Its molten eyes locked onto her, and when it exhaled, the very air warped from the sheer heat.
Kai tensed. “A Fireborn.”
Mira swallowed hard. “That doesn’t sound promising.”
“Because it isn’t.”
The Fireborn snarled, its tail lashing against the cavern floor. Then, without warning, it lunged.
Mira barely had time to react before Kai grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of the way. The creature’s claws slammed into the ground where she had stood, sending a shockwave through the cavern. Debris rained from the ceiling as Mira stumbled.
“We can’t outrun it,” Kai said, eyes darting toward the glowing runes. “We have to fight.”
Mira’s heart pounded. “How? That thing is made of fire! I barely survived the last battle.”
Kai’s gaze locked onto hers, steady and unwavering. “You don’t just survive, Mira. You adapt.”
She clenched her fists. Adapt. Right.
The Fireborn roared, flames l*****g at the cavern walls as it reared back, preparing to strike again. Mira took a deep breath, reaching for the power she had felt before. It was there, just beneath the surface, waiting.
The Fireborn lunged.
