CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE Katty wanted to kill. She had driven to Clarence’s before she did something stupid, like booze, drugs or … hurt Bea. He could always talk her down. His place was better than being at that crappy trailer. Sometimes, with the new deck out front, it didn’t seem so bad. But today … she wanted to kill. She slammed the laptop closed. She had failed another one. Another test. Why did she ever let Clarence talk her into going to school? Her dad had always told her she was stupid— “Katty?” Clarence looked up from the file he was reading. “What’s wrong?” Her face burned. She wanted a fix. A drink. Whatever made her think she was smart enough to be a paralegal for him? “Katty.” He put the paper down and leaned in. “Tell me.” Her eyes burned now, too. “I failed another test.
