CHAPTER FOUR
Lucifer’s POV:
When the words came out of Charles's mouth it was as if time had stopped for everyone in that office. At first, I felt angry. Hayle could be said to be the person I hated most on the earth, and he was at my house right now.
But my attention shifted when I realized that I wasn't the only one agitated. Yes, Charles had a pounding heart, but the girl in front of me seemed even more nervous.
"What?" She said in a shaky voice, causing it to crack slightly at the end.
I quickly noticed her heart beating a thousand miles per hour, her breathing quickening, her palms ringing and her legs trembling. Her eyes met mine and I could only see one thing in them. Despair.
"I-- I need... I need to get out of here!" Luna said trying to understand her own words. She was so agitated that she was no longer coordinating her actions and what she was saying. She ran past me and hurried toward the office window. “I need--” She forced the window open but she didn't know about the lock at the top, so the window didn't even move. "Why doesn't this s**t open!" She said louder, forcing the window harder.
"Luna." I tried to speak but she wouldn't listen to me.
I could see the desperation she was in, and somehow it was causing some anguish in my chest.
"I need-- he can't get me-- I... I..." she said no senses as she put her hands in her wet hair and tried to stay steady while pacing around the office. I took a few more steps toward her but she was so focused on herself that she didn't see me. "I want to leave! Let me-- argh!" She said pulling her arms from her head and smashing her fist on the window.
"Luna!" I said walking faster to where she was while she forced and punched the window.
“I need to leave, please, I don't want to be here anymore! Please!" She spoke as she punched the barely moving window. That's when I noticed that her voice had a crying tone.
Luna punched hard enough to crack the window, so I quickly stretched my arms to keep her steady, but she kept flailing like crazy to get rid of my arms.
“Lucifer let me go! Please! I need to go... please!" She screamed as she tried to get rid of my arms around her, but i started to squeeze her two arms to prevent her from trying to hit me or break my window.
"Luna, calm down!" I would give it a try to calm her down, but she wouldn't listen to me. "Luna!"
I took her arms and turned her to face me while she still struggled. Her eyes did not meet mine as her face was covered with hair. I could see some tears on her cheek, but it was practically impossible to see her.
“LUNA!” I practically screamed, holding her arm with one arm and putting my hand on the side of her neck to prevent her moving her head further and getting hurt.
The girl stopped. Her breathing was calming and she had stopped struggling. I lifted her face and the sight made me feel strange again. Her blue eyes were crystal clear from the tears. Pink cheeks and nose, and extremely messy wet hair.
"Shh... it's fine," I said trying to keep her calm, brushing the strands of hair off her face and tucking it behind her ear.
I didn't know exactly why I was doing this, but my mother always told me that hugs and holding the person calmed her, whatever the reason was.
‘Tell him I'll be right down.' I warned Charles through the mental link, who nodded and left the room, which I thanked for being sound approving at that time.
I pulled the girl into a hug that she hesitantly returned. I could feel her heart in my fluttering chest, and her sobs still echoed in the office.
She pulled back and frowned as she looked at me again.
"Hayle is who's after you, right?" I asked slowly, not wanting another hurricane to happen.
"I need--"
"Yeah, I know... it's okay," I said rubbing her face slowly, making her frown again. "I'll make my proposal again... and if you don't accept... then I'll save some work and give you to him right now." I said seriously, but even though I tried, something in me couldn't make my body get away from hers.
"I'm going to die anyway." She said in a whisper, as if thinking out loud, which justified her trembling, frightened tone a little.
I didn't know what she was, but if Hayle was after her for so many days, she shouldn't be ordinary.
And I didn't really plan on giving her an easy time, I'd probably force her to go with me anyway.
"You're not going to die if you're here..." I said quietly. "Try to trust me." I hadn't noticed that my tone was almost pleading until I saw her reaction.
"He said that too." She murmured and walked away from me, back to the window, but this time just looking at the snow-filled trees.
The feeling was strange when she walked away, but I couldn't identify what exactly it was.
“Luna--“
"We both know I have no other choice here." She said turning to me. Her face was still red and her eyes were puffy. "Just... please don't give me to him."
"If you do our deal, you'll be safe." I answered slowly after a few seconds, and I noticed her body relax. I approached her again, slowly, making our faces get close to each other. "I'll go down there and see what he wants... if you want you can go with me." I said but she immediately shook her head quickly. "It's all right. Stay here and I'll be right back, okay?" I said putting a hair that was on her face behind her ear.
I didn't know why I was being kind to her. It was probably pity. It was probably the first action I thought of when I saw the girl in despair.
I left the office, leaving Luna inside tof it with puffy eyes and tears on her steaming cheeks. I straightened my blazer and walked down the black stairs of the house, and went to the main hall of the house.
Charles and Jake were there, at the front of the stairs, along with some warriors closing the doors to other rooms. Zayn wasn't there, but I knew he was training some puppies right now.
Hayle was standing in front of the front door, arms crossed, and four men behind him, tall and strong, all wearing red clothes, arms crossed and a firm stance. The smell of oregano reached my nose and I immediately knew it came from the man. Each one had its scent, but being alpha, his scent was dominant on the room, even though it fought with mine.
"Lucifer! Did you miss seeing me?" He spoke in his rough, firm voice. His dark brown hair was perfectly groomed with gel, and his emerald eyes were fixed on me. He wore an elegant suit that highlighted his tanned skin and his alpha posture.
"What the f**k are you doing here, Hayle?" I asked with an annoyed tone. No wonder I was angry with him, after all, I hated that man
"Good to see you too, buddy." He spoke with an arrogant tone with a smug smile. "I know you got something that belongs to me." His tone changed, no longer arrogant but frightening. He was trying to confront me.
I walked down the last steps of the stairs and walked to face him
"If you're looking for your mate she's not here," I said arrogantly, knowing that was the issue that bothered him most. "But if she shows up, know that I won't give her to you... just out of anger." I said with a smug smile.
Being 26 and not having a mate was... desperate for anyone, especially an alpha.
Of course that that didn't include me
"Actually... yes." Hayle said and a smug smile appeared on his face. My heart stopped for a second. "I can smell her scent of waves from the sea from miles away." He said taking a few steps forward.
"Um... no dragon showed up here, sorry." I said pretending my heart hadn't stopped for a few seconds. Luna couldn't be his mate, right?
"Luna," he said and I felt us all get a little tense. "I'm sure she's here, so if you can bring me her so I can leave, I'd be grateful."
My body tensed automatically. Luna was his mate. But why was she running away? I mean, being Hayle's mate shouldn't be the best thing in the world so i kind of understand.
"I don't know any Luna." I replied crossing my arms, trying to maintain my posture.
“Will it be like this then, Lucifer? I thought we were friends. ”
"We were never friends."
"If you don't give me my mate, you'll be starting a war against the Blood's Pack." He said getting closer, trying to frighten me. "Just give me the bitch."
It was at that moment. At that moment I realized why she had run away. If her mate treated her that way, I wonder what happed behind closed doors. But something in me started to burn. A rage ran through my body. I wasn't sure if it was because he had called her a b***h or because she was my enemy's mate.
But why would it be the first option? I didn't even know her and honestly didn't care about any girls
"I know why you don't want to give her to me... you already saw the slut's fur, didn't you?" He said quietly, as if reading my mind. My body tensed and the urge to punch his face was practically taking over my body.
"I think you should leave, Hayle." I said and automatically the pack members stepped forward, preparing for any attack from Hayle.
“You will regret this decision. I'll be back for her." He said annoyed
"So you're f****d because she's with me now." I said raising an eyebrow and noticed his body tensing. "Charles, show the way to this lost puppy." I said with an arrogant smile and turned around, up the stairs
I glanced back as I climbed the steps and saw Charles and Jake pushing the unwanted guests out of the door. My steps stopped when I looked forward to see Luna sitting on the third step, hidden by the wall, hugging her knees.
Her eyes were crystal clear and her nose was reddening, sniffing at times. The hair was already almost dry, ruffled over her head, but the part I had put behind her ear was still there.
I climbed over to where she was and sat beside her on the step, staring at the floor-to-ceiling glass window in front of us. The snow-filled trees and the white ground created a beautiful breathtaking view.
"Are you his mate?" I asked trying not to show the irritation in my voice.
I looked at her and Luna automatically shook her head slowly.
"Shouldn't a mate love you?" She looked at me. Her eyes so sincere and her voice so innocent, slightly hoarse from crying.
"What did he do to you, Luna?" I asked. Her name came out like velvet across my lips.
Her eyes now stopped on mine. As if she didn't know what to say. She opened her mouth but closed shortly thereafter.
"Will you still protect me if I don't tell you?" She asked innocently. Luna looked like a scared girl. So scared she didn't know how to react.
Although my curiosity was taking over my body, I didn't want to force the girl to say anything
"Yeah," I said slowly, looking at her truthfully.
Luna nodded slowly, then turned her gaze to her hands on her knees. She didn't seem to want to say anything. So I just sat there by her side.
I didn't understand why, but it made me feel weird. I felt a need to protect her. Probably because she was alone and defenseless.
But there was something special about her. And I urgently needed to find out who she was and why she was just like me.
