Peekingthrough the curtains the sun played along the floor. Mumbled agreeance andrandom sounds of approval. A whispered questions and heavy breathing floatthrough the air. I sit up on the edge of his bed. His arm is still draped overmy lap, I look down at him his hair sporadically falling in his face. I set myphone back on the nightstand and rub his shoulder.
“Noah…” I nudged his arm. He grabsmy hand and pulls me down. My face is inches away from his. I can feel his warmbreath on my face, and I smile. “Noah…Noah get up. We need to get ready and go.”His eye opened slightly, just enough to glare at me.
“Go? Just where are we going?”His voice was full of confusion.
“For starters…” I said pushing awayfrom him. “We have to go to my house I need clothes. Second the principalcalled he asked if we would show some new kid around.” He glared at me andgrunted.
“What happened to a chill day?” Helaughed standing up to change. We laughed as he grabbed a few snacks from thekitchen and we headed to his car. The sun played along the water as we drove tomy house. The first real day of summer and kids play and frolic in the lowtide. Some are collecting shells from tide pools. Noah grips my hand as we pullup to the house. Several large windows covered with black curtains clashagainst the bright day.
“Come inside?” I glanced at him.
“Yeah…Sure.” I step out of the car grabbingthe mail and stepping up onto the porch. The door opens without a click. I lookat it sideways. I must have left it open. I quickly open the door the rest ofthe way and walk inside. Noah trails behind me smiling. The empty living roomopens into the dining room and kitchen door. Noah rubs my arm as a hesitate atthe bottom of the stairs and gives me a wink. I place my head on his hand andsigh. His warmth spreads through my body. At first it feels like somethingwithin me shifts. A small whimper of a noise pops into my head. Pushing itaside I take the first step.
“…You know…the offer…it is still onthe table? Just pack your clothes and come and live with me and my dad. Ourplace is plenty big enough. Plus dad is never there, it is one of the beautiesof living mostly alone. I have a ton of extra space…” His eyes pleaded. Hehated seeing me so alone. He wasn’t any better. I smiled and rubbed his cheekhe leaned into me.
“When does dad come home? I haven’tseen him in a while.” He stared at the floor when I asked. I grabbed hishand and smiled.
“He was supposed to be home alreadyfor the beginning of the summer, but it looks like he might not get home at allfor a while. He just wants to be home before graduation. This merger seems tobe taking a while longer than he initially anticipated. We talk often.”
“Tell him his daughter-in-law saysthat she misses him.” I said as we walked up the stairs. He laughed. We walkinto my room and he plops onto my bed flinging the pillows to the floor. I walkto my dresser and grab a few things and walk into my closet closing the door. OutsideNoah continues to fidget around in my bed.
“I will, we are going to talktonight, I’ll tell him that you will be staying with us for the summer.” Istick my head out and frown at him. “Nah, no more choice, you are staying. You canuse guest room, at the opposite side of the house if you’d like.” I roll my eyesand go back to pulling on an old pair of cut offs and a gold tank top.
“You and I both know that I can’tstay with you. What about this one? Will it work?" I come out and twirl infront of my mirror. Then look at him.
“I think you look gorgeous asalways. And you are going to staying with me.” He interjected. “Even if I haveto kidnap you and lock you up in the guest room. It’s going to happen.”
“I don’t know whether to beflattered…or a little creeped out. I guess I really don’t have a choice, do I?”The look in his eyes said I didn’t but his smile tempted me to try. “...If Isay yes…and that is a big IF, what is in this for me?” I ask lying across thebed on my hip my hair falling back around my shoulders. He smiled thinkingabout it for a moment. His eyes sparkled with thoughts. I almost laughed. Hetilted his head crinkling his noise.
“Well for starters it would meanyou get to bask in the awesomeness that is me. Staying with me means that youwould not always be alone. And plus….” At this point I stopped listening, Icouldn’t focus on his voice any more. My body felt strange. It was unlikeanything I had ever felt before. I felt something reaching out to me trying tobreak free, but it was unable to breakthrough it barrier. My heart pounded, andI felt my face flush. I gasped as a sharp pain twanged through my body. Noahstopped talked and looked at me.
“I fine.” I tell him. But his eyesfill with worry and I know that he will not give up until I say yes. But I justdon’t know why I feel so unsure about it. I smile and nod my head. “Fine, youwin. But we should go.” Still feeling weak I lay against the bed telling himwhat to but in a large duffle bag he had found in my closet. He tornadoesthrough my room gathering the things I tell him to. A voice pricks the back ofmy mind the words unintelligible but there. I frown. What is happening to me.
Tori is still laying on the bed herbreathing labored as I finish grabbing her things. I feel her growing. The putis becoming stronger as she awakens. I feel her scratching at the surface. Sheis reaching out with her mind. And I wish she could feel mine. She looks up atme when I set the bag on the floor. She gets up and we head to the town square.
I wonder what he will be like, Iglance over at Noah who is still occasionally staring at me. As we walked outover the bridge I see this young man standing by a tree a few girls hadgathered around him smiling and flirting. He was handsome the way he stood wasconfident. Almost like he felt me he shifted to looked at me he smiled and leftthe girls behind. There was an odd connection I felt to him that I couldn’texplain. Positive or negative I couldn’t tell….
“Tori?” His eyes were piercing upclose. I nodded, and he smiled. “I am Ezra.” His voice was clear and calm, Ithink I have heard it before.
“It is very nice to meet you, Ezra”His smile was odd, yet inviting. “This is Noah.” Noah nodded at him. Ezrasmiled. We introduced ourselves and walked around for a while. I should himwere the classrooms were and where his locker was. We pointed out our favoriterestaurants and a few of the better hang outs. When I was near him I felt warm.
Get the hell away fromus you pompous jackass.
You wish lover boy. Butthe Council is growing impatient. They feel her awaken, I know you feel it. Theywant her. you have had so much time to tell her the truth and yet you have kepther here in the dark. Even after they sent their scouts to kill her caretakers.
You will never touchher! She is my mate. I will never allow the Council to put their filthy handson her? A loud growl echoed through my head. I glared at Ezra.
You maybe a prince, butyou are not mine. She is my sister, and a princess in her own right! I willremove you if need be! Never doubt that! I love her, I sent her away for herprotection. Do not doubt my intentions.
I will kill you beforeI allow you to take her back. She was promised to me since before our birth. This is not something you can stop!
Well we will see won’t we…
“Sounds great here’s my cellnumber.” I smiled.
“Thank you. Should hang outsometime?” His voice was soft. Barely a whisper. I was surprised, for this guywho has been so confident this entire time. “Maybe go see a movie or to themall?” his gaze became so intense, and the color of his eyes were different nowcompared to moments ago.
“Sure, that sounds like fun.” Ismiled. “I’ll text you later and we can set something up.” He smiled ear to earbefore turning to walk away. I turned to Noah who had already began to walktowards the beach. I don’t know why but he is pissed at me.
