Chapter 5

Aurora's POV I got to the Chicago police department almost an hour after I left the hospital. I demanded to see Kai on the grounds of being his lawyer and I was taken to him. He was kept in a cell with several other people. Kai stood up and walked to the cell bar immediately he saw me. His hands touched mine on the steel and he didn't take his eyes off me. He looked pale already. He looked like he hadn't eaten since he was brought in. I was angry and scared about that. "It's good to see you again." Kai said calmly. "Why haven't you been eating?" I asked defiantly. "Forgive me if I'm too paranoid to eat whatever this police brings to my table." Kai spat. "But they've also not offered me any food." "Sir?" I called one of the police men. "Can we at least sit together over there?" I asked, pointing at a free table outside the cell. We could sit and talk. "You'd be watching of course. I might just be here for quite a while." I said. The policeman shrugged. He opened the cell and we sat together. I wanted to hug him desperately but I couldn't. Not if what he wanted was what I was thinking. "Aurora, I didn't do it." Kai said, about to go into details. "Wait, Kai, before you start spilling, I need to know why you've called me here." I said. "To be my defense lawyer, of course." Kai said and I nodded. "Would that really work? Given that the opposition might argue about conflict of interest and all?" I asked, not sure if I wanted him to rescind what he already said. "I'll ask you one question that would clear it all up." Kai said. I shrugged. "Ask away." Kai locked his eyes with mine, as if the key to the truth laid in them. "Aurora, do you love me? As in love love?" Kai asked. I almost choked on the question. I was beyond flustered. I was shocked. I did not know how to answer. What would I possibly say ? I was breathing really hard. I shook my head slowly. Kai scoffed and nodded. There was a flash of pain in his eyes but it was probably from anything else. There's no way he cares about me enough to cause him pain. "Then, I don't think there's any conflict of interest." Kai said. That's not the whole thing about conflict of interest but I understand what he pointed at. I never thought I'd deny being in love with him. I took very deep gulps, trying to calm myself down. I slowed down my breathing and composed myself. "So, since I'm your lawyer, you know you have to tell me the truth." I said. "I know." "So, what happened out there?" I asked. "Aurora, the only thing I know is that I didn't kill him." Kai said in a compelling manner. "I only met the bastard a few times. Yes, I hated him but that was all." "Kai, one hundred percent honesty." I emphasised. "I didn't kill him." Kai is not one to lie. He never lies. Not even when his life is in danger and that was one reason why I trusted his words so much. "So, what happens now?" Kai asked. "First, I need to get you out of here. I can't have you not eating." I said. "Before that, I'll need to draw up a contract for us." "What's it with you and contracts?" Kai asked, chuckling a little. "This one is to be able to waive the conflict of interest thingy." I said, rolling my eyes at him. "And you sound too calm for someone that's on trial for murder." "You really don't expect me to be scared while you're around me." Kai said. "Your presence brings a sense or comfort." "Kai, stop all that." I said, getting a piece of paper and a pen from my bag. "Walk me through that night. Don't leave anything out!" "Well, I had a drug delivery with Adam, we got the money, I rode to our spot in the woods...." "Why did you ride there?" I asked, trying to stop my chest from heaving so hard. The numerous things that had happened at that spot in the woods. It was the perfect place. It was the place I fell in love with Kai. "I don't know. I wanted to feel whole, I guess." Kai said with a shrug. "Hold on." I said, walking to one of the detectives to get Kai's case file. Immediately I had it, I was back in the cell room. "OK continue." "After the woods, I drove back to the clubhouse." Kai said. "And that was around what time?" "7 something. Didn't really check." Kai mumbled. "Then what else?" I asked. Kai went on to tell me everything else that had happened. The fight he got into but didn't remember and the long ride back to the clubhouse. "How bad is it, Aurora?" I asked. "Really bad, Kai." I mumbled. "According to this, they have the gun used to commit the crime and it was found in your office. Everything matches." "What the f**k?" "Also, your bike, Vigor, was seen right outside Gregory's clubhouse." I said. "I was there for a drink, Aurora. I stopped by there." Kai said. "I believe you, we're just going to have to prove this." I murmured. "I'm not even sure we can get bail with all of these." Kai blew raspberries and buried his head in his palm. "Bail might be possible since there's no flight risk and you're not much of a danger to the society." I said. "At least, you have a clean criminal record." "I'm sure my father would be so happy about this." Kai muttered. "Is there anyway out of this?" "Kai, the only way I can see right now is to show many other possible suspects with more damning evidence or better still, find the killer." "Aurora, don't do anything dangerous and if you need help, get the boys from the club." Kai said. I nodded in affirmation. "Do you believe that I didn't do it?" "I believe you. I also believe that you're too much of a criminal to get caught doing crimes." "If only we could bring it in as evidence." We both chuckled and there was an awkward silence. "Why me, Kai? Why not Mr Finn?" I asked, breathing at a very normal pace. "If I'm to trust anyone with my life, it would be you." Kai said, locking eyes with me again. If only he had any idea of how weak his eyes always made me. "Well then, I'll be back with a contract and also try to get something on the bail to get you out of here." I said, packing up my bag. "The bail hearing is by 2PM." Kai said. "What the... seriously?" "Yeah." "s**t. I have just two hours to draw up a contract and get on my lawyer game." "You can do it, love." Kai said with a smile. Can I do it though?
