WHEN THE RAIN FOUND US
The first drops of rain fell just as Lily stepped out of the town library. She sighed, hugged her books to her chest, and looked at the gray sky.
"Perfect," she muttered. "The one day I forget my umbrella."
Across the street, a motorcycle stopped. The rider removed his helmet, revealing messy black hair and calm brown eyes. He walked toward her, holding out a spare umbrella.
"You'll catch a cold."
Lily blinked. "You're offering an umbrella to a complete stranger?"
He smiled faintly.
"I've been called stranger before."
She laughed despite herself and accepted it.
"Thank you."
"I'm Ethan."
"Lily."
The rain grew heavier as they walked together toward the bus stop. Neither of them noticed that this simple meeting would change both of their lives.
---
Lily was nineteen years old and loved books more than parties. She dreamed of becoming a writer, though she had never shown anyone the stories hidden inside her notebook.
Ethan was twenty-one and worked in his father's small repair shop while studying engineering. He rarely smiled, but when he did, it made people forget how quiet he usually was.
The next afternoon Lily entered a café near the library.
Every table was occupied except one.
Unfortunately, someone was already sitting there.
"You again?" Ethan asked with a grin.
She folded her arms.
"You followed me."
"I was here first."
She looked around.
"I guess we have to share."
They spent the next hour talking.
Books.
Movies.
Childhood memories.
Dreams.
When Lily finally stood to leave, she realized something strange.
Talking to Ethan had felt... easy.
Like she had known him for years.
---
Weeks passed.
Sharing one table became sharing coffee.
Coffee became evening walks.
Evening walks became long phone calls that stretched far past midnight.
One evening they sat beside the river, watching the sunset paint the sky orange.
"I've never told anyone this," Lily whispered.
"What?"
"I want to publish a novel someday."
Ethan looked at her.
"Then you will."
She shook her head.
"What if I'm not good enough?"
He smiled.
"The only people who never fail are the ones who never try."
Those words stayed with her.
Sometimes all someone needs is one person who believes in them.
---
Autumn arrived.
The leaves turned gold.
The air became colder.
One afternoon Ethan arrived carrying a small wrapped box.
"For me?"
"Open it."
Inside was a leather notebook.
The first page read:
For the stories only you can tell.
Lily felt tears forming.
"It's beautiful."
"I expect your autograph when you're famous."
She laughed before hugging him without thinking.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Neither of them wanted to let go.
---
But life rarely allows happiness to remain simple.
A few days later Ethan received an email.
He had earned a scholarship to study abroad for two years.
It was everything he had worked for.
Everything he wanted.
Except now...
It meant leaving Lily behind.
Neither of them knew what to say.
The future they had imagined together suddenly stood at a crossroads.
Outside, the first winter wind swept through the streets.
Inside, two hearts silently wondered whether love was strong enough to survive distance.
