16 Zara Zara came downstairs early to start her work, to find Mrs. Gardner already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. “Please, let me help you, Mrs. Gardner.” “Call me Cath, everyone else does.” “Cath.” Zara still had to get used to the informal attitude of the Americans. In a German household a servant would never, even after decades of service, call the lady of the house by her first name. “Thank you again for the opportunity, I will not disappoint you.” “I’ll show you everything today and starting tomorrow you can work on your own.” After Mr. Gardner had left for work, Zara asked, “May I place a phone call to Berlin to let my friends know that I arrived safely at your house?” “Off course.
