It had been months of getting heavier with child while trying to care for three children. Lenoir was exhausted, emotionally drained, and in dire need of a good day. The provisions brought from Maryland were mostly gone. Thank God for Johnny and his trap lines. He had brought her rabbits as well as elk and deer meat. She had come to Oregon too late to plant a vegetable garden, but the forest could be her garden this fall. She picked chanterelle mushrooms and hedgehog mushrooms, they had built a home there just at the end of morel season. As they finished the cabin they had had a pie with the last of the season's blackberries and thimbleberries. Lenoir stood up from her bed, her feet cool on the wood floor.
