Chapter 1:Intel
BANG, BANG, BANG
"Oi hurry up in there! What's taking so long?!"
Kalista looked up at the door and rolled her eyes. She looked back down at the young boy below, her knife gently pressed to his neck and then across to the middle-aged man that sat tied up. He stared directly at his son, his sobs coming out in waves.
"Just tell me what King Casimir is planning, I need to know what their future movements are going to be." Kalista questioned in an icy tone.
"You know I can't tell you! I can't betray my people like that!" he remarked. She looked up at him and whispered, "I know that you can, and I know that you will, if you both want to come out of this alive."
At that his eyes shone with a glimmer of hope. Would this assassin really let both of them live?
"I'll tell you... But please just spare me and my boy. King Casimir is planning an attack against the church and the Amedeo Knights. The church won't know what's coming, they think that we are aligned with them to invade the lands across the sea. However, my commander has decided that our force is bigger than theirs and we can succeed in doing so without the church's aid."
As the man continued to divulge military intel to Kalista, she pulled out two small vials from a pouch at her side. Once he was finished, she took the top off of the first one and tilted the young boy's head back and administered the small vial. She ran her hand gently through his hair and wiped away the tears that now stained the frightened boy's face. The child sniffled briefly before falling into a deep slumber.
"What are you doing?!" yelled the man. Snapping her out of her thoughts. "Stop!" He screamed with desperation. She looked across to him and scowled "Shhh!" She walked over to him slowly, then cut the binds on his wrist and held the vial up mere inches from his face. Leaning in, she whispered softly "This contains a powerful sleeping draught, it will slow your heart and it will make my husband think that I have... tied up loose ends. Nod your head if you understand."
Slowly, the man bobbed his head in understanding and reached out for the vial that hung before his face. Popping the cork off, he gazed at his son's distressed face, tilted his head back and swallowed the contents.
As soon as the man had nodded off, Kalista breathed a sigh of relief. She looked around at the dimly lit room and set to work on staging the scene. She knew that leaving a high ranking official and his son tied to a chair would likely rouse suspicion. However, it also needed to look believable to Fin, her husband, who impatiently waited outside. She settled on dragging the man's body to a small bed that lied in the corner. Next, she carried his son and placed him curled up next to his father. Throwing a blanket over the two of them, they looked as if they had fallen asleep peacefully. Grabbing the ropes that had bound them, she quickly stuffed them into her pack and then brought out a vial containing a bright purple liquid. Looking around, she found two glasses and a water pitcher. She dumped the bright liquid into the water and then set the vial on the small huts table. Filling the two glasses halfway with the water pitcher, she arranged all the items on the table to seem as if a disgruntled father had ended his own suffering.
"I suppose that will have to work." She mumbled, and walked to the door.
