Pups

"You know, you can be a great guy when you want to be," Jared said shaking his head.  "We spend so much time together with pack business, . . . I just don't understand how you could be the same person that r***d her.  You did all those horrible things to her.  She screamed so many nights, every time she slept.  How could you be the same person?"  Looking at him.  "How could you all do that to her?"

"I know nothing I can say fixes that night.  I really thought she agreed, I was upset because I thought she had been with so many other wolves that I was blinded by rage.  One night, ruined my life and my future.  I would do anything to change what happened but I can't.  I can only hope to help you two and earn her tolerance one day."

Jared nodded at him, continuing to eat.  "I still want to hit you."

"I know.  Didn't think you had done it enough times yet."

Jared looked up seeing the doctor coming back in to check on the pups.  He spent quite a bit of time checking each one.  Finally, he smiled.  "They are looking better Alpha."

"Good,"  he said smiling.  "She will be relieved to hear that when she wakes up."

Alex looked at him, what is he going to do if Elizabeth didn't wake up?  "What do you need me to do or watch for?"  Alex asked the doctor.

"Make sure the tubes don't come out and if they are getting empty, tell the nurse to change them."  Alex nods in understanding.  "Someone will check on them at least every two hours or you call for someone."

"No problem,"  Alex says setting an alarm.

For the rest of the night, Alex made sure to follow everything the doctor had said.  He got up checking on the pups all night long.  The staff checked before the 2-hour alarm, Alex was relieved.

Jared crawled into the bed with Elizabeth.  He noticed her breathing was much better when he held her and the monitors improved.  "I Love You."  He whispered most of the night, after telling her how important she was to the pups.  Alex felt pain each time he heard it.

When morning arrived, the pups burst into the room.  They were so excited to see the babies.  Alex couldn't take his eyes off the twins.  Jared had finally fallen asleep.  Jacob glared at Alex as soon as he walked in, Cory telling him to calm down.

"How long has he been asleep?"  Jacob finally asked.

"Not long, maybe half an hour.  He was talking to her all night.  If she doesn't wake up, he is going to lose it."

"That's what happens when you have a mate that cares about you."  He said taking a stab at Alex.

"Listen, I know I am worthless, and what I did was horrible.  I am just trying to help them."

"We know, he will back off,"  Cory said glaring at Jacob.

"No, I"

Cory cut him off, "You will or you will sleep alone."

"I can't believe you are taking his side."  He said glaring

"I am taking their side,"  He said motioning to the bed where both Alpha's were asleep.

It was silent for quite a while, "Ok, I will keep my opinion to myself for now but I am watching you.  I still don't trust you."  Jacob said glaring at Alex.

"I understand,"  Alex said nodding.  "I wouldn't either if I was you."

Turning around he picked up one of the girls very carefully, "Morning Princess," He said kneeling down to the four pups.  "Would you like to see your sister"

The four quickly surrounded him talking to the tiny pup.  Little fingers rubbed her tiny hands.  Alex really enjoyed watching the pups up close.  He always kept his distance when he watched the family and enjoyed seeing just how amazing these boys were.  If only he hadn't screwed up, things would have been so much different now.  After they had talked to her for a while he asked if they wanted to see their brother now.

Little heads nodded, he switched pups after handing the first to Cory.  

"Hello, little Prince."  He said picking up the little boy and getting down on his knees.  The little boys all grinned and were instantly touching his little hands and feet.  The little boy squirmed, appearing to be watching the bigger boys.  Alex laughed watching all their expressions.  "You like having a little brother?"  Xander locked eyes with him grinning, his head nodding vigorously.  "Should we see your other sister now?"  

"Yup" came Xavier's tiny voice.  A huge grin on his face.  It melted Alex's heart.

He handed the little boy to Jacob.  "Just watch his tube, they had problems with it in the night."  He said as he placed him using extreme care and making sure he was alright before walking back to the crib.

As he was picking up the last pup, he heard Cory ask, "Alex, have you had any sleep?"

"I'm fine." Is all he answered.  He carefully picked up the pup and again kneeled down by the pups.  "Morning, Heart Breaker"  Little fingers quickly were rubbing her hands.  

"Baby"  Zack said giggling as the pup yawned.  Her eyes were a beautiful blue that would remind you of clear ocean water.

"She is pretty cute, huh?"  He said smiling at Zack.  Zack just nodded, Alex wasn't sure if he even understood but he looked quite happy.

Zane went to Cory and kissed his little sister's head.

As the doctor came back into the room to check on the patients, Alex looked up from the floor.  

"How did the night go?"  The doctor asked looking at him.

"Nothing from Alpha Elizabeth.  Alpha Jared fell asleep finally about an hour ago.  Prince has been trying to suck on his fist, 2 diapers, he cried a little, but calmed right down when I placed his upright.  He seemed to have an upset stomach and was fine once he burped.  Princess only had one diaper, no crying but wanted to nuzzle to fall asleep.  Heart Breaker, 2 diapers and wanted to coo most of the night.  She likes to have you sing to her.  She did not sleep much, she is too interested in seeing the world."

Jacob just stared at him, the doctor asked a series of questions and Alex knew all the answers.

"Are they ok?" Alex asked anxiously.  "I made sure they were checked before the two-hour mark all night."   

"Alex you have been doing an amazing job with them.  Thank you for following all the instructions so closely.  You need some sleep too."

"No I am fine, just make sure her pups are going to be ok."  He said looking down at the pup in his arms.  "They just need to be safe."

"Alex, just take a nap ok?"  The doctor said looking in his eyes with a penlight.  "I know you have been working long nights before this happened, I saw the girl that was attacked.  I know you have been responsible for the new security measures.  What have you slept in the past two weeks?  Maybe 12 hours total."

"Doesn't matter, pack safety is my job."

"These two are here now, I have a bed next door."

"No, he said shaking his head.  I gave Jared my word.  I can't leave the pups."

"Bring him a bed in here.  We will stay and he can close his eyes."  Cory instructed the doctor.

"No, I am fine,"  Alex said again.

"You are going to sleep because they need you awake tonight.  If you fall asleep something could happen to the babies right?"  Cory said looking him in the eye.  "Then you will have broken your word."

Alex looked conflicted.  Finally, he looked at Cory, "You are sure that it would be ok?  I don't want to disappoint them."

"We are here.  Take a nap, I will write everything down."  Cory assured him.

"You know the difference between Princess and Heart Breaker right?  All the information has to be kept track of for the doctor."  Alex said very seriously.

Cory looked at Alex, "How do you tell them apart?

Alex proceeded to show him the difference in their eyes.  "They are just like their older brothers."  Motioning to Xander and Xavier showing him the difference in their eyes.

Cory smiled.  "I didn't notice that.  We got this, go to sleep."  He said motioning to the bed.  

Finally, Alex laid down.  He only slept for a short time but woke up when the nurse came in to check the pups.  He was surprised to feel a little body on the bed next to him.  Slowly opening his eyes, he saw Xavier cuddled up to his chest sleeping.  His eyes went wide.

"Sorry, he got up there and fell asleep while we were looking after the pups and we didn't have the heart to wake him up,"  Cory said looking at the shocked face Alex was making.

"No, its no problem.  Just surprised he is sleeping so soundly."  Alex was really so happy to have his pup so close.  He was excited to see him so content next to him.

"They are all doing great.  Keep up the good work."  She said leaving the room.
