Chapter 1: An unexpected rift
Chapter 1: An unexpected rift
Location: New York City, 2035
Eleanor hurried through New York's crowded streets as she concentrated on her wrist's digital display. The noisy environment filled with neon illumination surrounds busy passersby. She always felt separated from the chaotic city around her because she believed she was merely a small piece of its busy machinery. But that morning was different. The sky displayed an unnatural purple shade which created a tense atmosphere similar to the quiet moments before a storm.
"Eleanor, you're late!" Jessica's voice blasted through Eleanor's headphones and broke her focus.
Eleanor murmured "I know, I know" while looking at her watch. The meeting that might shape her future had already started without her because she arrived ten minutes late. Working on this innovative project at her tech company might propel her to public attention. She increased her speed when she felt an odd sensation spread throughout her body with a tingling sensation at the base of her neck that suggested the earth beneath her was moving.
The ground below her started shaking unexpectedly. The ground beneath her feet began to tremble gently, similar to a distant earthquake. The tremors intensified as the entire city vibrated together. Eleanor staggered, her heart pounding. As she scanned her surroundings in bewilderment, she observed everyone around her continue their path unaffected while ignoring the situation at hand.
A dazzling light erupted from the sky and silenced everything around.
Viewpoint:Jessica
Jessica walked back and forth in the modern glass-walled conference room while Eleanor’s phone call finally connected.
"Eleanor, where are you? "They're about to start the demonstration." She pleaded while clutching the table's edge. Jessica detected a distracted tone in Eleanor's voice on the phone which made her stop momentarily. "How are you?"
"I... I 'm not sure. "Something happened. "Something big." Jessica detected an unusual sense of fear as she listened to the quivering voice of Eleanor.
"Wait a minute before I pick you up," Jessica commanded while she turned toward the door. Jessica was about to reach the elevator when her cell phone buzzed with another call. This time it was a news alert.
"Unexplained phenomenon strikes New York! "Earthquake-like vibrations were felt across the city.
Jessica felt her heart sink . The whole city was shaking. But why didn't anyone panic?
Viewpoint:Alex
Alex watched the chaotic scene unfold from across the street while maintaining an eerie, calm demeanor. He had foreseen this c***k. A break in reality. His gaze shifted towards Eleanor where she stood motionless in the street's center.
People treat it as one more strange event among countless anomalies that fill our world. But for Alex, that wasn't enough. And there's more. Alex had spent many years getting ready for this particular moment.
The ChronoGuard agency's secretive membership includes Alex, who has received training to monitor such disturbances. Alex must maintain vigilance over temporal anomalies because they create events that destroy space and time. The New York City disaster was more than an ordinary earthquake. This event revealed itself as a break within the fundamental structure of time itself.
He adjusted his collar before advancing to lose himself among the people around him. Alex had to locate Eleanor before the temporal rift expanded anymore. The cracks will continue to expand until they create permanent damage.
Point of view: Eleanor
The world around Eleanor begins to distort as her vision blurs. The overhead light began to flicker and bent Eleanor's view of her surroundings into rippling waves similar to those found on a disturbed pond. She extended her arm automatically toward the streetlight where her fingers met its surface, but something about the touch was off . The feel of the metal surface transformed when she made contact with it.
She felt dizzy. Her reflection in the store window held her gaze and she became motionless. The woman looking back from the store window seemed unfamiliar because she didn't match Eleanor's memory of herself. Her hair possessed a deeper shade along with eyes that appeared... distinct. Her spine chilled as she saw the sneering reflection in the mirror.
Eleanor gasped and stumbled back. The sensation of moving through time and space along with the passage of moments engulfed her because she lacked understanding of the situation.
"Get out of there now!" Through the haze of her thoughts, Jessica's voice cut through and snapped Eleanor back to the real world.
The shaking ground made Eleanor question whether it was her surroundings that were breaking apart or something within her own being.
Viewpoint: Alex
Alex moved toward Eleanor with caution due to his awareness of the instability of the fracture. There was no time to waste because if he delayed the timeline would become irreparable. Reality has been warped by this anomaly, which now draws pieces of both the past and future into today's timeline. The situation presented a threat to all individuals present, not exclusively Eleanor.
When he finally reached her, the fissures expanded even further while the surrounding air became more warped. "Eleanor, you must come with me," he said, maintaining a calm voice.
Wide-eyed with fear and confusion, she gazed at him. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"I'll help," Alex replied. "Trust me, you don't have much time."
Eleanor shook her head as she struggled to understand the situation while her world fell apart around her. "What happened? Why did this happen?"
Alex hesitated. He works to safeguard the timeline which maintains historical events as they originally occurred. His mission required him to expose his true identity at this critical moment. He stepped closer, his voice becoming deeper. "You are trapped in a time rift. You... you are from the future."
Point of view: Eleanor
Eleanor's heartbeat quickened. Future? She is just an ordinary skilled worker. There must be a mistake here. The ground below her feet broke open like shattered glass before she could utter a word, and she fell into the void.
As Eleanor's body contorted and elongated, she saw the world extend endlessly before her. The shapes and colors around her rapidly merged into an erratic blur while amazing landscapes and broken time swirled around her.
She stretched out her hands in a frantic attempt but realized the situation was beyond saving. The rift had taken her life.
Viewpoint: Jessica
Jessica reached the site just in time to observe Eleanor vanish into the c***k with her body appearing and disappearing intermittently. "No! "Eleanor!" Jessica screamed in desperation, but her voice disappeared into the surrounding chaos.
She tried to move forward but encountered resistance from the air, which acted as though reality itself was rejecting her presence. She reached out to her phone in a desperate attempt to contact Eleanor, only to find it completely dead. Nothing worked.
Then, a voice came from behind her.
Everybody knows where she disappeared to.
Jessica turned around. It's Alex. Alex stood before her as the man who had previously warned Eleanor.
"What did you do to her?" she demanded, her voice filled with anger.
"I didn't do anything," Alex replied. I'm trying to save her. But we have to act fast."
Jessica narrowed her eyes. The man lacked her trust, yet his tone created a momentary hesitation. She found herself in a situation that far exceeded her ability to understand. If Eleanor has truly disappeared through time, then Alex might have the solution to locate her once more.
"I'll go with you," Jessica said firmly.
Alex nodded. "Then we had better hurry."
When Jessica and Alex move closer to the rift, their surroundings start to transform. Time isn't just breaking, it's unraveling. Time continues to slip away as they struggle to repair the unraveling fabric of reality.
