The Only Child

"Talia, wake up! You can't be late for school again!", mom yelled up the stairs. I rubbed my eyes and sat up in my bed, waiting for my wolf and my brain to catch up with my body. Though my human body is completely blind, my wolf gave me sightvision; I can see everything since she came, just grayscale. When I use my sightvision, the cloudiness fades from my eyes, my pupils become a deeper gray color with a light silver inner circle. When I shift, my wolf is completely seeing. It was so delightful when she came, to finally experience not only sight but color. Up until my moon goddess shined down upon me, I was mostly sheltered from the world. Mother homeschooled me, and I was rarely allowed to leave the home. She was worried that wolves who aimed to usurp my father's title as Alpha would use my disability to their advantage. Now I am finally able to be independent and go to a regular school. Early mornings, I was not always so grateful for the change. My wolf and I gave a long sigh in unison as we connected, and vision came back to my eyes. I rushed to the bathroom for a quick shower, brushed my teeth, made a quick job of my makeup and threw on a pair of leggings and a sweater. As I walked from the bathroom, I tied my deep auburn hair into a quick ponytail and pulled my hood over my head. I shoved my books into my backpack before heading downstairs, where mother had a pile of bacon and eggs waiting for me. I felt my wolf drool. I scarfed the whole plate down in a matter of seconds. "Someone was hungry, huh? Maybe it's a good thing you are our only child. Between you and your father, I hardly ever stop cooking," mother said, sighing, but her eyes were smiling. I looked at her with pity; she and my father wanted to have many cubs, especially since they did not know if I could ever be Luna given my disability. "Oh, don't start with that, Talia; you're the best cub I could ever ask for," mom said, grinning from ear to ear. "Mom! Stop you're gonna make me cry, and it'll ruin my mascara," I teased. I wasn't entirely teasing though. I was only a few days away from my eighteenth birthday, and at that time my mate could find me at any moment. I didn't want to be rejected before I even had a chance to leave a good impression upon them. I was worried about finding a mate; most of my female classmates were swooning over any of the athletic boys in our all-werewolf school. I never found any of the boys particularly appealing. In fact, the only ones I found appealing at all were other female wolves. I'd always heard that once you find your mate everything just fits together perfectly, all you can think of is your mate, and attractiveness doesn't matter. I prayed to my moon goddess that one day I would have a mate like this, and that we could help rebuild our small clan into a large, powerful clan. After stewing over my thoughts for a moment, I looked at my watch; time to head out. "See you later mom!", I shouted as I walked toward my car. "Bye honey, see you this afternoon," mom replied, waving to me as the door closed.
