Chapter One
CHAPTER ONE
AMELIA’S POV
I was excited. After four years of being bound to Ro by a marriage contract, it was finally the end of that contract. I was excited because I knew that we could finally express our feelings to each other without the contract hanging over our heads.
I didn’t plan to fall in love with him. It just happened. We entered into the contract marriage for our own personal gain. It was simple, stay married for four years and then go our separate ways.
Along the line, we became friends, and then best friends. We developed feelings for each other but we couldn’t say it out loud because it went against the rules of our contract.
It was 11:55pm. Only five more minutes till the expiration of our contract. I sat in his office waiting for him to get home. I had rehearsed what I was going to say to him over and over again all day.
I wasn’t nervous at all. I knew he felt the same way. Even if he didn’t say it out loud, I knew he loved me as much as I loved him.
I saw it in the way he looked at me, the way he called my name. The way he knew every little thing about me. I couldn’t even go a day without talking to him. He was the first person I texted when something happened and I was also the first person he texted too.
I looked back at the clock. It was 11:59pm. Just one more minute until the contract expired. He had texted me and told me he was going to get home before midnight. I wanted to wait but I was too excited so I texted him and asked him when he was coming home.
The message got delivered but he didn’t reply. I decided to wait a little longer. He was a busy man so he was probably held up.
The clock changed. It was 12am. Our contract had officially expired. I smiled. Over the course of the last few years, I’d been waiting for this moment.
I checked my phone to see if I'd gotten a reply from Ro. I hadn’t. I decided to send him another text.
Me: Happy four years, Ro.
He still didn’t reply. I was getting a bit worried. If he was going to be later than he told me, he would have called or texted to inform me.
My worries died down when I heard the familiar ding of the elevator. I rushed out of the office and went to meet him.
“Ro.” I smiled.
His back was turned to me. He was focused on removing his shoes and placing them on the shoe rack. He put on his house slippers and then turned to face me.
“You’re still awake?” He asked.
“I wanted to wait for you.” I didn’t even notice how off everything was about him. He wasn’t even smiling.
“You can go to bed now.” He attempted to walk past me but I stopped him.
“What is it? Are you okay? Did something happen at work?” I asked.
“Get your hands off me.” He looked at me in disgust.
I was taken aback. He had his moods but he never spoke to me in that manner.
“What is it? Did I do something wrong? Is this a prank?”
He looked me up and down before shaking his head and walking to his room. I followed behind him. He shut the door in my face but I opened it and entered the room.
“Did I say you could come in?” He asked.
“Roman, what’s the meaning of this? It’s our anniversary. Why are you acting like this? What did I do? I’ve been waiting for you to get home all night and you’re acting like this.”
“Anniversary?” He scoffed. “I can’t believe you.”
“What did I do?”
“You know what you did.” He pointed an accusatory finger at me. “I don’t need to tell you.”
He took off his suit jacket and started undressing.
“No, I do need you to tell me because I have no idea what’s going on right now.”
“Get out, Amelia. I don’t want to see you right now.”
Tears started pooling in my eyes. “If this is some kind of sick joke you need to stop. I’m not going to forgive you if you’re playing some type of prank on me. You can’t speak to me this way.”
“I can speak to you however the f**k I want, Amelia. Get out of my room.”
I took a step back. Not because I wanted to leave but because his words felt like a blow to my chest.
“Roman. What are you doing this? Talk to me. What did I do? We're supposed to be celebrating our anniversary. I even got a gift for you. Why are you acting like this?” My tears started rolling down my face.
“Oh, so you know we’re supposed to be celebrating our anniversary.” He took a few steps towards me. “You don’t get to cry in this situation, Amelia.”
“What did I do?” I yelled. “Tell me.”
“You want to do this right now?” He asked. “Fine. We’ll do this your way. I wanted to go to sleep and deal with this in the morning but you’re asking for it.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
He went to his work bag and brought out a file.
“Here.” He shoved it at me.
I opened the file and looked through the contents.
“No.” I shook my head. “Roman, no. Why?”
“Why?” He sneered. “Our contract expired, Amelia. That’s why.”
“No, don’t call me that. Don’t call me Amelia.”
“Isn’t that your name?”
He never called me Amelia. Always Melly, never Amelia. He spoke my name now with so much venom.
“You can’t do this to me, Ro. You can’t.” I shook my head and threw the divorce papers he gave me back at him.
“What did you expect? The four years are up, Amelia. This was the plan. We stay married, get our inheritance and after four years, we’ll go our separate ways.”
“I thought you loved me.”
“Loved you?” He snorted.
“So these four years meant nothing to you?”
“They meant what they were supposed to mean. A business transaction.” His words were like a knife piercing deep in my heart. This wasn’t how I expected the night to go.
“You don’t mean that.” I shook my head.
“I mean every last word, Amelia. You have only till tomorrow to sign the papers. I don’t want to be tied to you any longer than that. Now, leave.”
I didn’t wait for another word from him before running out of his room.
