CHAPTER TWO
AMELIA’S POV
I didn’t sleep the whole night. I wanted to. I wanted to close my eyes and pretend that what had happened was just a bad dream but sleep wasn’t coming to me. I was forced to stay awake and replay the conversation with him over and over again.
I kept asking myself what went wrong. I was so sure that he felt the same way I did. I could have bet my whole life on it.
I could hear him moving around the house. He was getting ready to go to work. I stayed in bed because I wasn’t ready to face him yet. I wasn’t ready for him to tell me he meant everything he said. I was still hoping it was some kind of joke.
It was almost 9am. I had to get out of bed. I still had to go to work. I still had an event and a launch to plan. I got out of bed and went to the bathroom. I wasn’t even shocked at what was looking back at me in the mirror.
My eyes were red and puffy from crying and my hair was a mess. I spent almost an hour in the bathroom getting myself together. I got dressed and stepped outside the room.
I wasn’t expecting to see Roman. I thought he would have left for work already. He was having breakfast. I joined him at the table. Mel, the chef put together a plate for me.
We ate in silence. It was unusual. Our breakfast mornings were usually filled with conversation. He was done with his food before me. He still sat until I finished my plate.
When the table was cleared, he reached into his bag and brought out the file from the night before and handed it to me again.
“Sign it before the day is over.” He picked up his bag and stood up.
“Roman, let’s talk about this.”
“Talk about what? You’re acting like this wasn’t the plan all along. Our marriage contract is up. Don’t act pathetic over this.”
I stood up. “You can’t do this.”
“Do what?” He asked. “If I knew you would be like this, I would have picked someone else to do this with.”
“But can we talk about this? You’re angry at me and I need to know why. You want to get a divorce? Fine, but we’re not enemies. You’re like my best friend, Roman.”
He laughed. “You should have thought about that before betraying my trust.”
“What are you talking about?”
He didn't reply to my question. He walked away from me. I followed him to the elevator. He couldn’t even look me in the eye.
I sighed. What was he talking about me betraying his trust? I couldn’t sign the papers, even though it was what we planned from the beginning. Even though he didn’t love me romantically, we were friends. I deserved an explanation before I would sign the papers.
I went back to the dining room and took the papers. I tore them into two before trashing them. I got my bag and made my way into the elevator and down to the garage.
I checked my phone and I already had a few missed calls from my assistant. I sighed and started the drive to the office.
Blackwell & Co.
One of the most prestigious jewelry companies in the world. It was founded by Roman’s grandfather almost sixty years ago and had grown into a global luxury brand. Roman was now CEO.
For the 60th anniversary, we were launching a new collection. It was a special collection for couples. Roman and I were the face of the whole campaign and ironically, we were about to get a divorce.
I was the Executive Vice President of Brand and Product Development which meant I was in charge of the whole launch process. The only reason I chose Roman and me as the face of the campaign was that I was so sure that we wouldn’t be getting a divorce. It was laughable how everything was thrown back in my face.
The drive to the office was about 15 minutes. I got into the elevator and pressed the button for the executive floors. When the doors opened, my assistant, Jenny, was waiting for me.
“I’ve been calling you.” She said.
“I had a rough morning.” I answered as we walked together to my office. “What’s the schedule for today?”
“I pushed the 9am meeting with the design team to 4pm. You have a meeting at 11:30 with the marketing team and then you have a photo shoot with Mr Blackwell at 2.”
“A photo shoot?” I asked as I sat down at my desk.
“Yes. We need a few more pictures. You approved it.”
“Oh. Okay. Is that all?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, leave. You can meet me at the conference room when it’s time for the meeting.”
“Okay.” She nodded and left my office.
I let out a huge sigh. I had totally forgotten about my shoot with Roman. Did he forget too? How was I supposed to act normal when he had given me divorce papers?
The time for the meeting rolled around and I went to the conference room. The meeting ran for two hours. I had only 30 minutes before I had to go for the photo shoot with Roman. I decided to see him first to reduce the awkwardness.
I took the elevator to the top floor.
“Is Roman in?” I asked his assistant.
“Yes, but he gave me instructions not to let anybody into his office.” Lisa, his assistant, answered me.
“I’m not anybody, am I?” I asked. “I’m his wife.”
“I know but he said-”
I didn’t let her finish her sentence. I walked to his office door, opened it, and walked inside. He was sitting with his head buried in his computer. He looked up to see who it was then returned to his computer.
“I think it’s time to get a new assistant.” He said.
“We have a photo shoot together at 2.”
“I’m aware of that.” He didn’t look up from his computer.
“At least look me in the face when you’re speaking to me.” I sighed.
He finally looked up from what he was doing. “What do you want? Are you here to give me the signed papers?”
“Those papers are in the trash and I’m not signing them until you tell me what’s wrong.” I folded my arms.
“There’s nothing wrong. It’s tiring to repeat myself. Our contract is over.”
“You said I betrayed your trust, what did you mean by that?”
“Is that what you came here to do?”
“No.” I said. “I came here to tell you that we need to act normal for the shoot. Don’t look at me like you hate me.”
“Got it. Is that all?”
“The launch. We can’t get divorced before the launch.”
He thought about it. I knew he thought the same thing as me. It would be a disaster if news got out that we were divorced before the launch of the new collection.
“Fine. We'll act like a married couple until after the launch. I still need those papers signed before the end of today. I'll tell my lawyers to send you a new one.”
“f**k you.” I turned in my heels and exited the office. He called his assistant in and I heard him telling her how she needed to follow his instructions better. What an asshole.
