Chapter Three

CHAPTER THREE AMELIA’S POV I went to get dressed for the photoshoot. It was a black fitted dress that stopped mid-thigh. I paired the dress with a pair of kitten heels. All my jewelry was from the collection. They also touched up my hairstyle and redid my makeup. The photo shoot was being held in one of the studios inside the company. I walked inside the studio. Roman was already there waiting. He looked insanely good in his black fitted suit. Before yesterday, he would walk up to me and tell me how beautiful I was in my dress. He was on the other side of the room. He only glanced at me and went back to fixing his watch. It stung but I couldn’t cry in front of the whole team. I walked to the mirror to look at myself one last time before we started the shoot. I got startled when a pair of arms wrapped around my waist from behind. It was Roman. I stared at him questioningly through the mirror. “We still have to act like a loving couple, remember?” He kissed my neck. “Oh.” My face dropped. A small part of me thought he had a change of heart. “One week until the launch. Come on, let’s get this over with.” He removed his hands from my wrists and went to take his place. I blinked back the tears in my eyes and followed suit. The first pose was a simple one. They had to take untold shots of us standing side by side behind a white backdrop. The second pose was a bit trickier. I had to stare at Roman straight in the eyes and place my hand on his face to show off the ring. His hands were also on my waist. “Can you guys get a little bit closer?” The photographer asked. Roman pulled me closer to him by my waist. Our lips were only a few inches from each other. I was tempted to kiss him. If he hadn’t given me divorce papers the night before, I would have placed a small kiss on his lips. “What did you mean when you said I betrayed your trust?” I whispered. “We’re in the middle of a photo shoot. We're not having this conversation now.” He whispered back. “Are you even going to have this conversation with me? You’re dead set on me just signing the papers. You’ve refused to tell me what I did to you.” The director showed us another pose we had to do. We changed positions. “I don’t know what you want from me. Our contract is over.” “Stop saying that.” I pleaded. “We were more than that contract. You know that.” “I don’t know anything. Just drop this. I just want to be done here and leave.” His tone told me that he wouldn’t be entertaining the conversation anymore. We finished the shoot in one hour. Immediately we were done, I made my way out of the studio and went to my office. I wasn’t about to cry in front of everyone. I shut the door behind me and locked it. I couldn’t risk Jenny walking in on me. I broke down. I covered my mouth with my hand as I sobbed. I tried hard to be quiet but I knew anyone walking across the hallway would hear my cries. I still had another meeting to attend so I tried to get myself together. I had already ruined my makeup. I took a few wipes from my bag to wipe everything off. My hair wasn’t ruined so I didn’t look too bad. Before I left for my meeting, I put on lip gloss and mascara so my face wouldn’t be completely bare. I was done with work at 6pm. I knew Roman was still in his office. I didn’t know if he was done with work or just staying late intentionally. I would usually go up to his office and if he was done, we would go home together. I couldn’t do that again. I took the elevator to the garage and got in my car. I didn’t want to go home just yet so I started the drive to my best friend’s house. The doorman already knew who I was. He didn’t need confirmation to let me into the building. I went up to her apartment. I rang the doorbell. I knew she would be home. After about a minute, the door opened. “Lia, you didn’t tell me you were coming over. Come in.” She said as she hugged me. I walked into the apartment and dropped myself on the couch. “Jade, it’s over.” “What’s over?” She asked. “My marriage.” “I thought you were going to confess your feelings to him yesterday?” “I thought so too. It’s all over.” “Girl, talk to me. What are you talking about?” I broke down again for the second time in less than 12 hours as I told her what happened between me and Roman. “I don’t know what went wrong.” I cried. “Are you sure? Did you do something to him?” She asked. “I didn’t. I can’t think of anything I might have done that would have caused him to act this way. We were fine before he left for work.” “Maybe he didn’t really feel the same way towards you. Maybe it was just an act so he could get what he wanted from the marriage.” She said. “I know what I’m talking about. He loves me.” It was beginning to look pathetic like Roman said but I wasn’t about to be gaslit about what I knew. “Amelia.” She placed her hand on my back. “You said it yourself, he never actually said he loved you. It’s possible he didn’t.” “God, I sound crazy.” I laughed. “You’ve seen the both of us, Jade. Tell me he doesn’t love me. You’ve seen the way he looks at me.” “It might have just been an act.” Our conversation was interrupted by my phone ringing. It was Roman calling. “Where are you?” He asked immediately as I picked up. “Is there a problem?” “You’re not in the house. Where are you?” “I’m at Jade's place. Do you need anything from me?” “I need you to sign the papers.” “I already told you that I’m not doing that unless you’re ready to tell me what I did to you and why you’re so angry at me. Unless you’re ready to have that conversation, don’t bring up the topic of me signing the papers again.” “You’re going against our contract. I can easily sue you for breach of contract.” “Go ahead, Roman.” I hung up the phone.
