CHAPTER FOUR
ROMAN’S POV
I hadn’t felt betrayal like this in a long while. Amelia was the first person outside my family that I trusted with my life. Her betrayal had cut me so deep.
I actually had no intention of explaining anything to her. It was clear that what she wanted from the beginning was to get what she needed and leave when the contract expired.
I’d actually developed feelings for her. I was a fool. I thought I meant something to her. I was so f*****g wrong.
I didn’t understand why she was so stubborn though. She refused to sign the papers. I thought she would be excited to finally leave me and be with the man she actually wanted.
I stared at the divorce papers crumpled in the waste bin. Why was she making it hard for me? Why was she dragging out my misery? I just needed to be done with the marriage and move on with my life.
She hung up on me. I knew she wasn’t going to be home anytime soon. I knew she wasn’t going to be signing the papers anytime soon. I knew how stubborn she was.
I picked up my suit jacket and got into the elevator to take me to the garage. I got into my car and started the drive.
After driving aimlessly for about an hour, I ended up at a bar. I didn’t care that I drove myself, I ordered the strongest drink they had. I could always Uber home or call my driver to pick me up.
I was wasted. The bartender had actually refused to give me more drinks.
“Hey. I thought that was you.” Someone sat beside me. I turned to look at who it was.
“Serena?” I straightened up on my stool. “What are you doing here?” My words were slurred from all my drinking.
“I needed a night out. What are you doing in this kind of bar? Shouldn’t you be at home with your wife?” She asked.
I laughed. “Shouldn’t you be in London? What are you doing back here in the States? It’s been so long.”
“I decided to come back. I’ve had enough of London.” She said.
“Well, welcome home.” I nodded at her. “Can you do me a favor and get me a drink? This guy won’t give me any more.” I pointed to the bartender.
“That’s probably for a reason. You look wasted. Why are you drinking this much?”
“Shhh.” I placed my finger on her lips to shush her. “Just get me a drink.”
She got me more drinks. I probably should've stopped and called my driver to take me home. I didn’t know what I was doing in that bar. Anybody could have taken a photo of me in a vulnerable state and sent it to the tabloids.
I didn’t know what happened the rest of the night. I blacked out after too many drinks.
I woke up with a splitting headache.
“God.” I groaned. I sat up in bed. The room I was in didn't look familiar. I looked around trying to remember where I was. It looked like a hotel room. “Fuck.”
I wasn’t wearing any clothes. I looked under the covers, I was in my boxer briefs. How did I get here?
“Good morning.” A soft voice said from the other side of the bed.
“What the f**k? Serena?” I scrambled out of bed. The events from last night rushed into my head.
“It’s too early to be yelling.”
“What happened, Serena? Don’t tell me we had sex.” I put on my shirt I found on the floor.
“Okay, I won’t tell you.” She sat up in the bed exposing the top part of her body that wasn’t covered. I immediately closed my eyes.
“f**k, f**k, fuck.”
“It’s not like you haven’t seen all of this before. Why are you acting like this? You weren’t shy last night.”
“Shut up. This was never supposed to happen. God, I just cheated on my wife.”
“I thought you guys were getting divorced?”
“You told me that last night.”
“Get dressed.” I said before running into the bathroom. My eyes were bloodshot red from all the drinking. I looked at myself in the mirror.
I just cheated on Amelia. Even though I already asked her for a divorce, the papers weren’t signed yet. I just cheated on my wife with my ex-girlfriend. I knew going to the bar was a bad idea. I should have just stayed at home.
I was angry at Amelia for betraying my trust but then I turned around and did the same thing to her.
I splashed water on my face and got out of the bathroom. Serena was already dressed.
“I don’t like the way you’re reacting to this.” She said. “It’s making me look bad.”
“How did we get here last night?”
“We both drank too much and I called an Uber to get me back to my hotel and you came with me. It was your idea to have sex.”
I shook my head. “This never happened, okay? We never saw each other. We have to pretend like this never happened.”
“Roman. I thought-”
“You thought wrong. This cannot happen again. I’m leaving.” I found the rest of my clothes and put them on. I asked her the name of the hotel to tell my driver to pick me up.
“Can I ask for a favor?” She asked before I left the room.
“What is it?”
“Your company’s new launch is in three weeks. Can I get an invite?”
“Why?”
“I’m trying to start a career here. There are some important people I’d like to meet there.”
“Serena.”
“I promise no one will hear a word about this.” She mimicked a zipping gesture.
“Fine. I’ll get you an invite and that’s it.”
“Thank you.”
I left the hotel room. I covered my face with my hands to avoid being recognized by anybody. The internet would go crazy if they found pictures of me coming out of a hotel room.
My driver was already waiting for me. During the drive home, I kept thinking about how I’d f****d up. With Amelia, I’d only made assumptions about her sleeping with another man. With the pictures I’d gotten and the text messages, it was only enough to be suspicious. I’d just assumed everything else.
But I'd slept with Serena. There was no denying that.
We finally got to the house. I took the elevator from the garage straight to the penthouse. It was almost 9am. I was betting that Amelia would be at work already.
To my surprise, I found her in the dining room. It seemed like she was waiting for me.
“Where were you?” She asked.
“Out.”
She stood up and came to stand in front of me. “Is that a hickey?”
She pointed to my neck. I walked to the mirror and there was a hickey there. I hadn’t noticed it before. “No, it’s not. It was a mosquito.”
“Roman. Who were you with last night?” She sniffed my clothes. “You smell like another woman’s perfume. Were you cheating on me?”
“I just told you it was a mosquito. I wasn’t with anybody last night.”
“You liar. You cheated on me.” She poked my chest. “Is this why you asked for a divorce? You want to be with someone else?”
“I wasn’t cheating on you. I’m not cheating on you. I asked for a divorce because our f*****g contract is over.”
She pushed me. “You’re lying. I hate you. I hate this. f**k you, Roman.”
“f**k this.” I threw her hands away from me. “Believe it or not, I wasn’t cheating on you. Just sign the damn papers.”
I walked to my room. I felt bad for lying but I could only assume she was doing the same thing to me.
