Chapter Five

CHAPTER FIVE AMELIA’S POV It had been three weeks since Roman came home with a hickey and the smell of another woman’s perfume on him. He refused to admit that the reason he gave me divorce papers was that he had found another woman. I felt stupid. I had truly believed that our marriage was much more than a stupid contract. I fell for his act. I still refused to sign the divorce papers, not until he gave me a proper conversation. He was barely in the house these past three weeks. He barely even spoke to me. We only spoke at the office when it was necessary. He didn’t say anything about me signing the papers again. We were both so busy with the upcoming launch. I was sure rumors were already flying around in the company about us. It was clear to anyone who saw us that things were different between us. It was finally the day of the launch. After tonight, he didn’t have to pretend with me again. I hadn’t seen him all day but we were supposed to go to the event together. It started at seven. It was currently 5pm and I was getting ready but he was nowhere to be found. I knew he would wait until the last minute to be with me. The hairstylist and makeup artist did their thing on me. After more than an hour, I finally finished getting ready. I was wearing a black off-the-shoulder gown. I was accessorized with all the pieces from the collection. They complimented me so well. “Mr Blackwell is waiting downstairs.” Jenny told me. I sighed. He had probably gotten dressed somewhere else. I got in the elevator and went down to the garage. Roman was waiting by the limo. He opened the door for me when I got to him and went around to the other side to get in. The driver started the ride. The silence was so thick between us. If we kept it up, the headlines tomorrow would be speculating the worst about our marriage. Not like they’d be wrong anyway. I sighed. “Can we act normal? Just for the night. It’ll be a disaster if something goes wrong tonight.” “You think I don’t know that?” “Then stop acting like you don’t. We’re both mature. We should act like it. There’s too much tension between us.” He finally glanced at me. I was trying to figure out what was going through his head as he was staring at me. “You’re right.” He said. I didn’t even have the chance to respond. He leaned in and captured my lips in a passionate kiss. I couldn’t help but kiss him back. “What was that for?” I asked when he pulled away. “We still have to look married right? We’re practicing. Now it won’t look so awkward if they tell us to kiss.” “Oh.” “Don’t forget you still have to sign the papers tonight.” He said as he adjusted his cuff links. I rolled my eyes. “Whatever.” We finally got to the venue. There were cameras flashing at the car already. I took a deep breath. I could do it. He stepped out of the car first and then took my hand in his. “Amelia! Roman! Over here!” “Mr and Mrs Blackwell!” “Over your shoulder! Smile!” I could barely hear what the reporters were saying. Roman’s hand slid across my waist as we posed for the cameras. I tried not to show how much it affected me. I was still thinking about the kiss too. After almost 20 minutes of smiling and posing, we walked inside the venue. His grip on my waist loosened and his smile faltered. We still had to greet the guests together. After about 20 minutes of walking hand in hand, we went our separate ways. I went to find my family. “Hi.” I hugged my sister, mum, and dad. My grandparents were somewhere in the crowd too. My older brother couldn't make it to the event because he was away on business. “You put together a really great event, babe. I’m proud of you.” My mum said. “Thank you.” I smiled. “Where’s Roman?” My dad asked. “He’s somewhere around. I’m sure he’ll come around to see you guys.” I answered. They didn’t know about him asking me for a divorce and I wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible. The only people who knew about our contract marriage aside from the two of us were my sister and Jade. We both agreed not to tell anyone but I couldn’t keep it to myself. After hanging around with them for a little bit, the main event started. I went to take my seat at the vip table which consisted of me, Roman, his mother, his sister and her husband, and his grandparents. After introductions were made by the MC, Roman went to the stage to give his opening speech. His grandfather also gave a speech. It was finally time for me to introduce the collection. Roman helped me climb the stage. I talked about the inspiration behind the collection and its meaning. At that moment, I forgot everything that happened with Roman and me. I had spent months working on the collection. It meant so much to me even though the whole reason behind it was falling apart. After a long speech, it was finally time to unveil the collection. The lights were dimmed. I stepped to the side as the models made their way to the stage. Roman’s and my pictures along with some other models were displayed on the screen. After the whole unveiling, there was a toast made by Roman. I exited the stage. There was more mingling and media interviews. I was tired from walking around in heels all night. I found a quiet place to stay. My sister joined me a few minutes later. “Guess who I just saw.” She said. “Who?” “Guess.” “Alessia, I can’t guess. Just tell me.” I sighed. “Serena.” “Who?” “Serena. Roman’s ex.” “What?” “Serena. Roman’s ex.” She repeated. “I heard you the first time. How is she here? I reviewed the guest list myself. It’s not possible that she's here.” “Oh, oh.” She said in a singsong voice. I left where we were standing and went to find Roman. I saw him standing with some guests. “Can I borrow him for a second?” I said. They excused themselves. “What is it?” He asked. “I was in the middle of a conversation.” I didn’t get to reply to him because someone interrupted me. “Roman.” Serena smiled. I could tell Roman immediately became uncomfortable. “Serena.” He gave a tight smile. “It’s good to have you here.” “Thanks for the invite. It’s a lovely celebration.” “I know you two haven’t properly met. This is my wife, Amelia. Amelia, this is Serena.” She extended her hand and I took it. “Nice to meet you.” “The pleasure is mine.” I smiled. I was about to brush her off and continue my conversation with Roman but then I caught a whiff of her perfume. It was the same one I’d smelled on Roman that day. “Excuse us. Enjoy the party.” I took Roman’s hand and dragged him away from the crowd. After making sure there was no one near us, I stopped walking. “What is your problem, Amelia? I’m the host. I’m supposed to be in there. Why did you drag me out here?” He sighed. “You invited her? You went behind my back and added her to the guest list?” “I’m the CEO. I didn’t go behind your back to do anything.” “You f****d her didn’t you?” I asked. “What are you talking about?” “I smelt her perfume on you that day. The same one she's wearing right now. You did cheat on me. With your ex-girlfriend of all people. She's the reason you’re asking for a divorce right?” “You’re one to talk?” “What the f**k are you talking about?” I had to stop myself from raising my voice. “You’re going to stand here and accuse me of cheating when you’ve been going behind my back for weeks with another guy.” “You’re projecting, Roman. I don’t know what the f**k you’re talking about.” “I’m not having this conversation with you. f**k this.” “Don’t walk away from me.” He turned around and left me by myself. I had to get myself together. The event wasn’t over. I still had to be in the same room as the woman I got cheated on with.
