Chapter 31 – Aftermath
[Sebastian’s POV]
It was like the ocean tide before a hurricane. For the briefest moment, there was clarity again. Clarity like when I hugged my sister for the first time. In that moment, I was at peace. There was no contagion, no division among species, and my family was never ripped apart.
Then, the hurricane came crashing back in and left nothing but rage and anguish in its wake. It reminded me of everything the contagion took from me. When compared to the peace I experienced, the madness seemed endlessly worse than any other time I’d experienced it. I felt more susceptible to letting the madness in than ever before. Maybe it was because I experienced peace today. The peace must have eradicated my tolerance against the madness.
