Zola It was lunch time and both Lexa and Emma were planning our trip to the lake. "Okay, so the plan is to meet at Zola's at ten on Saturday. Then we can drive or walk through the forest to the lake“, Lexa said as she flipped through her textbook. Emma nodded in agreement, her curls bouncing as she did. "And we'll bring some sandwiches and snacks for lunch?" Lexa smiled, "Of course! I'll make my famous PBJ sandwiches". I chuckled, knowing that Lexa PBJ sandwiches were anything but ordinary. She always added a secret ingredient that made them taste heavenly. As we continued to plan our trip, I couldn't help but feel excited. It was our first weekend after school had started and we wanted to make the most of it. The lake was the perfect destination with its crystal clear water and beautiful surroundings, it was the perfect place to relax and unwind. We had been friends for years, Lexa, Emma and I. We met in elementary school and had been inseparable ever since. As we got older, our interests may have changed, but our friendship remained just as strong. The week would be hectic with schoolwork and extracurricular activities. So the thought of spending the day at the lake was a welcomed break. The girls finalised our plans and promised to meet at my house early Saturday morning to pack our things and head out. Saturday finally arrived and the sun was shining brightly in the sky. I could feel the excitement building up inside me as I packed my things. I made sure to bring my camera, as I knew the lake would provide great photo opportunities. The girls had texted me saying that they were on their way. When they got here we couldn't stop talking about all the fun things we would do at the lake. Swimming and maybe even some fishing if we were feeling adventurous. I could already taste Lexa PBJ sandwiches in my mind. Mum had made us all drinks so we grabbed our drinks and started our journey to the lake through the forest. The path was lined with tall trees and the sound of birds singing filled the air. As we approached the lake, the view took my breath away. The water was a stunning shade of blue, reflecting the clear sky above. We set up our picnic spot on a grassy patch near the shore and took in the peaceful surroundings. Emma and I couldn't resist the inviting water and quickly changed into our swimsuits. Lexa stayed behind to put together our lunch. We spent the day swimming, laughing and basking in the warm sun. As we ate our sandwiches, I couldn't help but marvel at how perfect the day was turning out to be. As the sun started to set, casting a beautiful orange glow across the lake, we knew it was time to head back. We packed up our things and walked back through the forest, chatting and laughing the whole way. Suddenly, there was a loud growl that echoed through the trees. We all stopped in our tracks, the hair on the back of our necks standing on end. Our eyes widened in fear as we searched for the source of the sound. It was like nothing any of us had ever heard before. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as we stood there, frozen in fear. Every sound, every rustle, seemed amplified in the silence that followed the growl. We were all acutely aware of how vulnerable we were out here, in the middle of nowhere. The sound was unmistakable. There was another growl, closer this time. It sent a chill down my spine and I could feel my hands shaking. We were surrounded by an unknown danger and there was no way out. "What do we do?" I asked, my voice trembling. Neither one of the girls had answered. I looked back at them Lexa was looking around but there was this cloud-like look to her eyes. But then, there was a rustling in the bushes. We all turned to face it, fear etched on our faces. Something was coming towards us, something big and powerful. And then it emerged from the shadows. It was a wolf, bigger than any I had ever seen. Its red eyes glinted in the fading light and its sharp teeth glistened in the moonlight. It stood there growling at us, daring us to make a move. All of a sudden it pounced on us but in the middle of it jumped another wolf connected with it.This one was bigger, its fur was white and it had blue eyes nearly as dark as the midnight sky but there was also red within them. Both of the wolves start to growl at each other. My mind went blank with fear as I watched the wolves start to circle around us. We were trapped, with no chance of escape. My hand was pulled, it was Lexa who seemed to have a plan. "We need to go, now!" she yelled over the chaos. I could see the determination in her eyes and I knew she wouldn't give up without a fight. She motioned for us to follow, her eyes darting to the wolves and then to a path led out of the woods. We all turned and ran as the wolves were busy with each other, without hesitation. Lexa pulled me along, my heart pounding in my ears. The ground was uneven and I stumbled but Lexa never let go of my hand. The sound of the wolves growls became more distant. I could feel my legs burning and my breath coming in short gasps, but I refused to slow down. Finally, after what felt like hours, we burst through the treeline and onto a road. We didn't stop running until we were a safe distance away. We all collapsed on the ground, gasping for air and trying to calm our racing hearts. It wasn't until then that I truly realized just how close we had come to death. "We all should head home" Emma stated still looking at the forest. "Okay but do call me when you get home I want to make sure you are okay" I said, we all then split ways as we headed home.
