What Did I Walk Into?

688 Words
I was unsure what to make of the scene in front of me. I will say there was no good way to look at it. I was sure of that. This man I barely knew, this man I was already scared of on some level, was threatening someone in the medical field, someone I find that I have the most respect for in this small town, not that, at that moment, I had a lot of time to know how I felt about him. Still, I had respect for him. And Xander had him by the collar. Why?               Again, I knew there were no good answers. At the same time, I couldn’t straight out tell how terrible he was. I couldn’t tell him anything. Still, I needed to say something. I couldn’t let him get away with that. I didn’t want to say something, but I had to. “Is everything alright?”               “Of course,” Xander said, quickly letting go of Doctor Manchester.               I took a step away from my door and closer to Doctor Manchester. “Are you sure you are alright?”               He nodded and pushed a smile to his face. “Yes, I am. Thank you for worrying about me, Lucy.”               I smiled and lowered my head only slightly. “You’re welcome.”               He looked me over one more time before he said, “You look amazing. Don’t you think so, Xander?”               Xander’s eyes took a while to roam over my body. I tried my best not to notice. I tried to stay calm as he began to do all of that. Eventually, his eyes searing into my skin made me nervous. It made me dance in place. Finally, he stopped and looked back up at me. “The shirt is a little tight.”               If I had been drinking, I am sure I would have done a spit take. I could barely believe he actually had the audacity to say that. I might have believed him, hell I probably did. But that hardly seemed like enough of a reason for him to say that. I went to open my mouth, but Doctor Manchester spoke before I could. “You look lovely. Don’t listen to him.”               I tried to force a smile out, but it was clear that I was nowhere near actually being able to smile about anything going on. Doctor Manchester took a step closer to me, but I quickly took a step back and offered only another polite small smile as a gesture of the faith I had for both of them. Though, I didn’t really have that much faith in either of them. Still, I forced a smile. “Please come in,” I said, opening the door wider for the two men. Xander walked in first, followed closely by Doctor Manchester. I shut the door behind the two of them.               I leaned against the door and took a breath before turning a forced smile upon my face to them. “You will have to excuse the mess,” I said, looking around at the sprawling kingdom of boxes. “I have not gotten a chance to unpack yet.” I had done my best to move all of the boxes into the hallway and other rooms where they could not see it. Still, there were several that they still could see. The house itself would be quaint once I got rid of the boxes. I guided them toward the living room area. There was a couch, two armchairs, another two chairs, and then a fireplace and a TV hidden in a cabinet above the fireplace in the living room.               “It’s quite alright. We certainly did not expect you to have everything in order yet,” Doctor Manchester stated. I quickly flashed another smile, one that he didn’t even turn around quick enough to see. “Can I get you a drink?” There was no answer right away, so I nervously started rattling information. “I have a pot of coffee on and…” Before I could even think about finishing, the doorbell rang.
