Chapter 2

I drop down to my knees and pick her up, one of the good parts of being part wolf, nothing seems heavy. I carry her to the closest bed and set her down. "Mom, what happened?" She shakes her head. I hear someone gasp behind me. My power goes out in a blast involuntarily. I was furious. A loud cry of pain came from behind me. I turn to see Taugue on his knees. I quickly pull back. "What happened here?" I spat out at him. "I don't know." he says. "I was watching you because I smelled an unfamiliar scent. It wasn't right." he looked at the ground still on his knees. I let out a low growl when my mom whimpered. "We only had enough time to stay for the night. We are expected in White River in two days. We can't be late." I say quietly. "I could drive you. I live there. I just came down to visit a few friends." he was fiddling with something metal, I could hear it. I lay my head next to mom not touching nor moving her. "Is there a place she can change without being seen? Like where humans won't see her?" I say quietly. After what seems like forever he finally speaks. "There is a place, but you won't like the location." I look at him. "It's about ten miles out of town where no vehicle can go. I'll have to carry her." I growl loudly, the growl didn't even sound like my own. He looked at me wide-eyed. "I told you that you weren't gonna like it." he says. I decided it would be best for mom. "Fine," I growl out, "but I'm coming with you; I refuse to leave her side. Help me get the rest of the stuff loaded and the blood cleaned up and we can leave. I'll return the keys and you can drive us as close to the area as possible." He nodded and gathered what was left and threw it in the U Haul while I cleaned up the bathroom. "Ready?" he asks me as I walk out of the bathroom. "Yea." I look at the bed where mom was lying, but she wasn't there. "Where is she!?" I start to panic. Taugue grabs me and makes me look at him. "She's in the Uhaul. I carried her out while you were still cleaning up." I let out a sigh of relief. "You need to start telling me when you do stuff like that. I also need to get you a bell so I can hear you when you walk up." We both laugh at my attempt of humor. "Where are we?" I ask as I see a bunch of trees and wildflowers. We are going down a back road to the location where we can let mom change. "We are almost to the location. Just about a mile left." he says. Mom is in the middle seat. She's lost a lot of blood but it won't be fatal. "We're here." he says. "Now we have to walk or run from here. Whichever you prefer." He says. "Let's run, it will be faster." I say. I look at mom. "It's gonna be ok. You will get to change soon." I look to Taugue, "How far?" He gives me a confused look. I restate my question. "How far do we run?" I ask again "Oh! About a mile. I have a little cabin out here no one knows about. We will go there, change and let her run." I nod. I pull mom out of the U Haul gently and hand her to Taugue. I growl at him as a warning to not hurt her. He nods and bares his neck; a sign of submission. I let her go and look at him. "Lead the way." I say. He takes off into the woods and I follow close behind. After about thirty to forty minutes we come into a clearing with an old cabin, just like Taugue had said. We slow down to a walk and Taugue stops suddenly. "What’s wrong?" I ask. Then the scent hits me. It doesn't smell right. It doesn't smell like anything I've ever encountered. I let out a growl and direct all my power to where the smell is coming from and after a few seconds I hear an agonizingly painful scream coming from inside. It was obviously a wolf, a very messed up smelling wolf. We walk into the cabin and see a boy about seventeen, same age as me, laying on the floor curled up into a ball clutching his stomach and head. I let up on my power a little to let him up on his knees. "What are you doing here?" I ask with a growl. Taugue's skin is crawling while he is holding back a phase. "I was running from him." The boy says in a small voice. "From who?" I ask. He looks directly at Taugue. Taugue looks at me and the boy confused. "Why are you running from me?" Taugue asks still holding my mom. The boy whimpers. "What are you talking about?" I ask the boy stepping closer to him. Taugue growls at me for my movement. "His father changed my scent when I was younger, he called me an outcast. No one will help me." The boy says. I bend down on my hands and knees and slowly crawl closer to him, not shrinking down but showing him who is alpha. He looks at me with pleading eyes then looks at Taugue, "Can you please ease up a little. I won't hurt anyone." He says "I'm not the one with that power." Taugue looks at me with humor in his eyes. The boy looks at me with wide eyes. "It can't be." he says. I look at him confused. He shrinks down all the way to the floor in a complete submission. "What is your name?" I ask. "Dakota." he responds in a voice so small I could barely hear. "Well, Dakota, what are you doing here?" I ask again. "Like I said before, I was running from the alpha." I look at Taugue. He looks at me in confusion. I look at my mom. "We need to let her change, it’s obvious he isn't a human so it will be ok." I say getting up and taking mom out of Taugue's arms. "Where is the closest bedroom?" I ask looking at Taugue. "Down the hall there are two. Choose either one you want." he says. I walk down and help mom out of her clothes and let her change in the room, as she's changing I walk out and leave her be. I see Taugue in the living room but he didn't see or hear me walk out. The boy was gone so I guess him and Taugue worked things out. I walk into the next bedroom and start getting out of my clothes so I can change too. After I was only out of my shirt and jeans I hear the door open and a loud gasp. I turn to see Taugue in the doorway. "What?" I ask not forgetting I'm pretty much in a swimsuit. "Your markings... They weren't there when I pulled you out of the water last night." He says. "What are you talking about? These are my alpha markings. I got them while in the pool last night." I say. He shakes his head. "They weren't there when you ran from me." I looked at him confused. They were there when I got out of the shower. I seen them. "They were there when I went to bed." I say. "Oh." Is all he says. After a long moment of silence passes and a tingling feeling on leg he speaks again. "They look like mate markings though." I look at him in disbelief. How can they be mate markings. I haven't met anyone but him. It can't be him. I look at him and notice a marking on his neck. I put my hand on the now tingling feeling on my neck. I never felt the mate pull. "This isn't possible." I whisper. "What's not possible?" he asks. "You can't be my..." Then everything went black.
