I had a psycho for a friend.

844 Words
It all started in freshman year of high school. My best friend, Lily, transferred to my school and we were instantly inseparable. She was outgoing, funny, and had a wild streak that I envied. Although we were complete opposites, we clicked and had a bond that I thought would never break. Lily had a reputation for being a little bit crazy, but I always thought it was just part of her charm. She would dye her hair a different color every month, pierce her own nose in the school bathroom, and wear the most outrageous outfits. I admired how she didn't care what anyone else thought and always did things her way. But as we entered our sophomore year, I started to notice that Lily's behavior was becoming more and more erratic. She would skip classes, show up drunk to school, and get into fights with anyone who looked at her the wrong way. I tried to talk to her about it, but she would just brush me off and say that I was being boring. One day, I arrived at school to find a huge crowd gathered around the entrance. As I pushed my way through, I saw Lily standing on top of a table, yelling at the top of her lungs. She was wearing a clown costume and throwing eggs at the students. I was mortified and tried to get her down, but she just laughed and continued her rampage. The school called her parents and they came to pick her up. I thought that would be the end of it, but the next day Lily showed up with a new tattoo on her arm, a pierced eyebrow, and a mohawk. She told me she did it herself the night before and didn't regret it one bit. As time went on, Lily's behavior became more and more extreme. She would disappear for days, only to come back with a new tattoo or piercing. She started hanging out with a rough crowd and got into drugs and alcohol. I was worried about her, but she refused to listen to anyone who tried to help her. One day, Lily showed up at school with a black eye and bruises all over her arms. She told me her boyfriend had hit her, but she didn't want to leave him. I was horrified and begged her to get help, but she insisted that she loved him and everything was fine. I couldn't take it anymore. I was constantly worried about her and I didn't know what else to do. I confided in our school counselor, who then involved our parents and Lily's boyfriend was arrested. Lily was furious with me for betraying her trust, but I knew I had done the right thing. After that incident, Lily's behavior only got worse. She started skipping school and hanging out with a new group of troublemakers. I tried to distance myself from her, but she would always find a way to pull me back in. She was my best friend and I couldn't just abandon her. One night, Lily called me in a panic. She told me she had taken too many pills and needed me to come over and help her. I rushed to her house and found her lying on the bathroom floor, unconscious. I immediately called an ambulance and she was rushed to the hospital. The doctors told us that Lily had overdosed, but thankfully they were able to save her. She spent a week in the hospital, and I stayed by her side the entire time. When she woke up, she cried and apologized for everything she had put me through. She promised to turn her life around and get help. True to her word, Lily started going to therapy and stopped hanging out with the wrong crowd. It was a slow process, but I could see her changing for the better. She became more responsible and started focusing on her school work. As we entered our senior year, Lily was back to being the fun and outgoing girl I had met in freshman year. She still had her wild streak, but she had learned to control it. We made plans to go to college together and I couldn't have been happier that my best friend was finally on the right track. On the last day of high school, we stood on the football field with our caps and gowns, ready to graduate. As our names were called, we walked up to receive our diplomas, and I couldn't help but feel proud of how far Lily had come. She had gone from a crazy psycho to a strong and determined young woman. As we hugged and said our goodbyes, I knew that no matter what, Lily would always be my best friend. We had been through so much together and I knew that our bond was unbreakable. I was excited to see what the future held for both of us, and I knew that no matter what, we would always have each other's backs.
