The Lie

This was a loaded question. It would take some time to get it all sorted and out. She's never told anyone this before. Only her small coven of sister's knows she's a witch. Her sister's and her high priestess, Blair. She was struck by the fantasy of being a witch as a child. She was drawn to it after finding a book of shadows owned by her grandma, Helena's surrogate mother after she turned wolf, Violet. Between Blair and Violet there was much support, grace and secrecy. Violet was an older wolf mother in the pack. An omega that didn't have many responsibilities. Her only pup died as a child and when Helena and William came into the pack she felt compelled to care for Helena as if she were her own daughter. Being only 13 Helena was in need of a mother, she still needed much care and love only a mom can give. Violet took on the role swiftly and it was as if she hadn't lost a child at all. She loved being a grandma too. Soaked up all the love from Nadia and gave twice as much back. She was the one to catch Nadia reading the book. "The book of Shadows?" Nadia reached for it on the tall shelf. In all actuality Nadia thought this was a book like Peter Pan. Maybe a story all about our shadows playing tricks on us! When she read the first few pages, even as a child of 10, she knew this wasn't a fairytale. "Whatcha got there sweetie?" Violet asked knowing full well what Nadia was reading. "Why do you have a book on how to be a witch grandma? Isn't this forbidden in the pack?" Nadia felt warm and busted. "It's forbidden to practice magic, engage with dark magic or seek it. There's all kinds of magic, religions, beliefs and ways. I like to keep myself well rounded in this world. We allow our pack members to educate themselves, even of the most heinous belief systems. The more we know, the better we can protect ourselves." Violet stroked Nadia's hair. "Oh. Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. It's like how I have to learn how to do math in my head even though we ALL carry a telegram device with a built in calculator!" Nadia teased. "Haha, sort of. Do you have any questions?” Violet said as she took the book from Nadia. “Nope, just thought it was a story book.” Nadia skipped away down the hall. Years past and Nadia remembered the book. Whenever she had a moment alone she found that book and read it. Memorizing the chapters and learning the terms. She found witchcraft intriguing, beautiful and even useful. How nice would it be to have powers. She kept the thoughts to herself and never told anyone she was very interested in becoming a witch by magic. She didn’t even mention it to her mother, even though Helena had a secret past with witches herself. Since these subjects could cause problems in the community it remained a secret from mother and daughter and granddaughter for years. Helena’s experience was more of necessity for magic then it was curiosity. Violet was the first person Helena told when she was expecting Nadia. "Mother. I'm… we're… I'm having a pup in the spring." Helena's reaction was dull. "Oh! A pup, Helena, this is great news!" Violet immediately hugged her and didn't loosen her grip for a long while. "Yes, yes it is I suppose." Again Helena's voice was low and quiet. "What? What's wrong?" "I'm a wife, a wolf, we've been outed, I'm Queen of a mostly human community and now, I'm having a baby. No, not a baby. A pup!!! A f*****g DOG!" Helena screamed. "Oh, hey hey sweetie. It's ok to be scared. You're human...first and most. That's something that will never truly leave your soul. But yes, you are a wolf now too and your baby will be as well. But you don't give birth to a puppy Helena, it's not like that." Violet tried to soothe her. "I just keep having nightmares of giving birth in a cardboard box, in a damp basement and it's not just one baby. It's a whole damn fur covered litter!" Helena began to cry uncontrollably. "Oh Helena. I can't… I dont… I don't know how to save you from this?" Violet began to cry as well. "Save me? What do you mean?" Helena looked confused. "I mean, once a wolf is expecting we don't have options like humans do. I know there is a procedure humans can have done…" Violet began to explain. "Oh, you mean an abortion? No, no I don't want that." Helena shook her head. "I learned about that in school, health class, God, health class. School. The lunchroom and lockers. Friends. I know what that procedure is and that's not what I want. I want a baby. A human, not a wolf pup, baby." "Oh,ok. It's just not something any wolf doctor would ever perform. We see any pup as a miracle, a gift from the Moon Goddess." Violet said. "That's very Christian of you. Makes me wonder if the Moon Goddess was actually a Christian, like the first animal with a religious concept." Helena smiled at her own joke. "Haha, maybe sweetie. You'll notice many religions either human or supernatural are pretty similar. Maybe we can get some help from a different religion? Something to at least subside those awful nightmares." Violet thought for a moment and turned to her book shelf. "I'm willing to try anything. If I could sleep without these awful dreams, I would definitely feel better." Helena rubbed her head and eyes. "Here it is." Violet pulled a thick book from the shelf and wiped off the dust. "The Book of Shadows. A Wiccan self guide." Helena said quietly. "Shadows? Wiccan? Mom?" "Shhh… we must be quiet." Violet held a finger to her mouth and opened the book. The book was written in 2013. It had some satire context and was a very simplistic explanation of Wiccan and Pagan religions. It basically stated anyone could be a witch which didn't make sense. To be a wolf, you needed to be born or bitten with venom. Even then you may not survive the bite because not everyone is meant to be a werewolf. The Vampires were similar except all survive the bite and are never born. Once a vampire was turned they are technically, but all human requirements, dead. Trolls are exclusively born as are fairies. One can only become werewolf, vampire and witch. But witches seem to be fairly lax on who they allow to have magic. "This basically states I can have a spell cast upon me but in order to have my own magic, I need an invitation by a high priestess? But I can also be a lone witch and study magic myself? That's confusing." Helena said as she read the pages aloud. "Well, we're not trying to become a witch. Maybe we can find a light witch willing to cast a dream blocking spell? That's all, right?" Violet turned to concern when Helena even mentioned using "her own" magic. "Right. Yes of course." Helena continued to read. "Let me do some searching. I will need to be discreet. You too sweetheart. We can't let anyone, especially the Alpha know about this. That pup is going to be a prince or princess in the pack, so hush." Violet outstretched her hand and placed it upon Helena's belly. "Yes, mother. I won't say a word about my dreams or any witch talk." Helena smiled but wasn't sure she could keep this from William. Violet knew finding a witch, a light witch would be tricky to do without notice from the pack. She would tell the guards she was going for an early morning run, for heart health, each time she shifted and took to the woods. Her lie seemed to appease them even if they were suspicious. It was rumored that both light and dark witches were in the area. Light witches tend to live in the country and wooded areas while Dark witches preferred to hide in the city. She wanted to find a Light witch first. She thought they would have more compassion, sympathy and kindness to the situation. Although a Dark witch may be the one with the best magic. Nearly a week of early morning and late afternoon runs Violet still hadn’t come upon a witch or a coven. She was beginning to lose hope when she saw a figure in the lavender fields. She quietly sunk down into the lavender and crept towards the figure. Human, Fairy, Troll… vampire? It could have been anyone and she needed to be safe from a distance. Thankfully a wolf has exceptional smell and vision and soon Violet saw what she needed to see. POV Violet What is she doing out here? Alone in the field, that's dangerous during these times. Is she… naked? She is! Must be a Fairy getting her wings. I’ve seen it once before as a child. It's a beautiful sight, though she seems a bit old to just be getting her wings now? She should have her mother with her too? Why is she alone? I watched as she danced slowly in the flowers. Lightly touching them with her fair skin fingers. I laid down as close to the ground as I could so she bobbed out of my view briefly. Suddenly the wind picked up and I saw it swirl through her long black hair. Just then a swarm of butterflies flew around her. She continued to dance and kept her fingers pointed outward. The butterflies seemed to follow her command like a conductor with an orchestra. They began to fly higher and above her head. She reached up for them and they floated back down, circling her waist. This time as they ascended into the air she floated too. Effortlessly and soft, her body elevated to the sky. She seemed to have complete control on how fast she went up and how high but couldn’t necessarily fly. She was simply floating with the butterflies above the lavender. The wind shifted and this beauty caught my scent! She looked in my direction, frozen in the air. Her eyes were completely white! They were strong yet gentle, sweet yet firm. It was as if she saw me, in my exact spot from so far away. I didn't move a muscle. I still didn't know who or what I was seeing before me. I'm not a fighter but I would use my natural ability if needed. The wind picked up again and her hair swirled upwards. Suddenly the earth began to tremble underneath me! I felt the grass and dirt shake more and more and without warning I sprang to my feet. "Viooooleeet". A loud whisper drifted in the air and lingered. I looked from the ground to this floating beauty. Did she say my name? I moved backwards a bit, readied my stance. "Hear my voice and heed my call. I sense your presence, tail, fur and all." the whisper grew louder and I felt an urge to walk to her. It was a soothing urge. Welcoming. I had finally found a witch. I stayed in wolf form as I approached her. She floated back to the ground and knelt down. She reached out for me to smell her hand. Her scent was beautiful and very much distinctive among the fresh lavender. White Sage, sea salt and rosemary. Then it shifted to water, fresh water, kind of beachy yet earthly. She noticed I was confused by her smell and made direct eye contact. She smiled and slowly moved to her side. A small pile of clothing lay behind her in the lavender. She motioned her hands in a way that said she wasn't reaching for a weapon. She pulled a small bag from under a white cloak. She dumped its contents onto the ground. A vile of salt, fresh sage leaves, a gauze bag of seaweed and several crystal stones. I looked at the items and my eyes must have widened. "Is it magic you seek, sweet wolf? You and I don't have to be enemies. I mean you no harm." She said so softly. I leaned my head forward and nuzzled against her arm. She reciprocated by placing her hand under my chin and the other upon my head. She stroked my fur and blew air from her mouth towards my nose. There it was; water. Fresh water like from the stream in the community. She grabbed her cloak and wrapped her still naked body in it. She put her items back into the bag and into a pocket of the cloak. She laid down on her side and yawned. "You saw my first levitation. It was wonderful yet exhausting. Would it be ok for me to rest a bit before we discuss your needs?" her voice was so calm. I nodded and laid down next to her. I watched as her eyes began to get heavy and close. I felt safe and a desire to also keep her safe. I stayed alert but relaxed enough to give her comfort and warmth from my fur. She fell asleep quickly and I watched as the butterflies surrounded us again. They seemed to want to protect us too. I awoke from the sound of her stretching and yawning. She smiled when she saw my sleepy eyes and gave me a pat on the head. She lay still and stroked my snout, scratched under my chin and behind my ears. I'd never received this kind of attention before and it was amazing. I loved being in wolf form, enjoyed the peace especially after my daughter passed. But this kind of affection was different and I fell in love quickly. At that moment I could stay a wolf and be her companion forever. "Violet. That's your name, isn't it?" I nodded. "Strange you found me in a field of lavender! Purple shades have always been my favorite. I can't hear your voice Violet but I can hear your thoughts. We can communicate like this. Wolf to Witch. I prefer you to stay in this form. That way I don't know your human counterpart and your safety shall remain." she was still laying down, comfortable and content. "Tell me your needs Violet." "My daughter is expecting her first pup. She's not a natural wolf..nor my biological daughter. She was turned by our Beta when she was 13. It was an accidental meeting of humans and wolves. Her husband, also turned, doesn't yet know of the pup. She's scared. She's having nightmares. Residual memories of being human and having a human child. I fear she could reject the pup at birth if a bond isn't formed. What can I do?" I spoke through my mind and she caught every word. "She needs a binding spell. Binding her fears. Does she want this help?" "She does. She's willing to accept help from you and to be discreet." I said. "I will need a few days to gather a recipe. A potion will be longer lasting." she said. "I should bring her here?" "Yes, we will meet here but I will perform the spell in my sanctuary, in the city." "The city?!" the fur on my neck stiffened. "Yes Violet. I reside in the city. I am a Dark Witch." ...
