Chapter 4

1021 Words
I had a big responsibility on my head now. I had it before too, but now people were looking at me. My people. They knew that I would be responsible for their success or their downfall. I knew I had to make decisions wisely now. Earlier, it was me making decisions, but without the responsiblity of being caught if ever something bad went down in the coven. I was a part of the council beforehand but even the council doesn't understand my involvement of leading the coven. That is why they will be targeting me, deeming me unworthing of being a leader, sitting in a seat where a much older, wiser and powerful witch should have sat. But fate had something else planned and it shows. They will accept me soon but I may have to prove myself to them once again. Just the way I had to prove myself when I became a permanent council member. "What are you thinking about?" Malina enquired, when she saw me sitting at the Leader's office, alone, deep in thoughts. "Nothing, just thinking about the responsibility I have on my head now." I replied truthfully. "Pftt! Don't worry about it, you have been leading this coven from behind for centuries now! It's a piece of cake for you. There is a reason our former leader chose you to guide and lead us. You are special Aurora." I was? Maybe. But him choosing me was a joke. I wish I could laugh at her face and tell her that reality was far from what she imagined. What anyone can imagine. "Talking about him anyway, where is Lead- I mean, where is former leader Malvick? It seems like I have not seen him in eons even though I am a part of the council!" It was true, that old man hasn't made an appearance in front of the coven or the council in months now. Obviously, I was the one who knew where or how he was. That doesn't mean I have to disclose it. Even though Malina was a close aquintance and a member of the Council of Coven, there were things that could not be spoken about. Secrets that I wanted to take to my grave. Unfortunately, I had a long way to go before I even step one foot in my everlasting space of death. "I don't know Malina." I sighed exhaustingly while she raised her eyebrows in shock. "What?!" I questioned, over our conversation now. I needed peace and silence now. I wanted to think. "Girl, you literally have a document with his personal stamp, sitting at this desk right now, while you sit at the desk he used to sit at, and you are telling me you don't know where he is?" Obviously she had to make valid points. Good thing that I am a pathological liar. It comes in handy at times like these. "You know I am telling the truth Malina. When have I ever even left this coven since he disappeared out of the blue? Even though I wanted to go out and look for him, bring him back, tell him that we need him! Yet I didn't, because I had to take leadership role here. Do you think I want this? I want to sit at this chair and take his place? No! This was given to me, I don't know why, but it's done now." I finished my sentence with a soft tone and a distant look in my eyes. Once a leader is chosen or selected, they have no choice but to accept it. There was a reason they were chosen. It was in their destiny. And you cannot fight your destiny! Oglo's words reached my ear. Words she said to me a long time ago. This was not the time to think about her. My performance and lies weren't finished here, so I continued. "Three days earlier, I was in my office, working on the results of the royal exams, when I received a red sphere, I immediately knew it was from Leader Malvick so I unlocked it. From within, this document fell out. I was devastated, I thought something has happend to him, that's why he is stepping down" Tears pooled in my eyes while Malina looked concerned for me, I don't like lying to her, but this has to be done. "But there was another letter there too, a letter from him, explaining his reasons, why he could not lead the coven anymore, how sick he was, and how to not look for him. He wanted his last days in this universe to be peaceful. He did mention something like being in etheral gardens, surrounded by flowers, I assume that he must have gone to the fairy meadows, but that's just my guess. I don't know really. He mentioned his reasons for choosing me. How I have always helped him make bigger decisions, decisions that were successful, how he decided that I will be the next leader decades ago. He was letting go of the authority just now." I finished with a sigh, knowing that I have convinced her and every other person in this coven. The second she is out of this door, rumours of how I was so great of a witch to take our former Leader's place in his absence would start going around. Nothing stays in this witch's tummy. "But why would you keep all this within you for 3 days?" She sniffled and looked at me with sympathy. Malina was a kind, emotional and a loving witch. That's why I have to lie to her, she wouldn't get my reasons, she wouldn't be able to handle them. I smiled at her, "Because I wanted the royal exams to be done and dusted with, I didn't want our young witches and wizards to think about anything else other than their exams." This statement of mine sealed the final nail in the coffin as Malina rushed to hug me. I smiled smugly. I'm glad I had to tell all these lies to her, it was always easier with her.
