Desperate Times

Liam He couldn’t sleep, couldn’t relax! After James left, grief engulfed him as he tried to feel the presence of his mate. Ira wasn’t in the next room. He wouldn’t enter her dreams anymore. How he had loved that connection! How he had revelled in the calming fragrance of his mate! His anger and frustration knew no bounds. He approached the IT team. “Where the Ff*ck are Jack and Alex?” He needed a scapegoat, someone who could take his wrath. Someone he could completely annihilate! But the two bastards were missing in action, total MIA. While Eric frantically gathered whatever information was possible, Liam paced the IT unit trying to burn off his anger and excessive energy. His brain felt full. A dull ache pounded against his skull. He closed his eyes to lull the pain but the familiar pressure of someone relentlessly trying to mind link with him made the pain intolerable and his head heavy. He sighed and, sitting in his private cabin in the IT unit, he allowed the thoughts of other wolves to trickle in. Maybe someone else’s thoughts would give him freedom from his own painful musings. ‘Where are you? We are in the office! You were supposed to be here at 4?’ Ben’s voice blasted. Even through the mind link, the urgency of it made it unbearable. It was an important meeting, but he couldn’t step away from here. He needed to be as close to his library. In fact, he wanted to get back to the library. He felt tired and inadequate. ‘Is everything alright?’ Ben continued in a sombre tone. His Beta was good. He knew something was wrong but he did not know if he could share Ira's disappearance with Ben yet. Liam just wasn’t in the mindset to do anything, he wanted to dig a hole in the ground and hide inside it. His wolf continued to whine, but he blocked the sounds of his wolf. He had a duty towards his pack. ‘I am close by. Will be there in 10.’ He responded, aware that he might need to face Monike too. ***** Four days later… Ira hadn’t shown up yet. His IT team was working round the clock; his trackers and hunters had roamed the entire land but found nothing. Meanwhile, Monike had submerged herself in preparing a grand party for their engagement. While he enjoyed the fact that Monike was too busy to pester him, he still dreaded the consequences. After the meeting with the silver moon clan, he hadn’t followed up with anyone there. He had given them a week's time, and he meant to stick to that. Liam desperately prayed to the Mood Goddess for a favourable response. He needed the alliance on his side and had done all he could to show Alpha Leo his intention of living in peace. Now the ball was in Leo’s court. Meanwhile, he had taken to constantly staying in his own chambers. Sometimes he caught a whiff of Ira’s flowery scent but most times his wolf whined and complained. His men hadn’t found Ira yet. His wolf was pining for his mate. Monike continued to visit him under the pretext of updating him about the party, although he had made it clear that he wasn't interested in knowing the details. She tried seducing him every time she visited, aggravating his wolf. Sheer luck saved them, otherwise, his wolf would have torn her apart. Liam had to tread cautiously around Monike. He couldn't risk upsetting his wolf any further. He hadn't realised his wolf's full potential yet, and he did not wish to see his wolf's ruthlessness in action. So he made sure that Monike did not get past the living room. Strangely those were the times' Ira’s scent in the library was stronger. As if his wolf was pulling out the memory of the scent to calm him. Maybe this was his special power! He grimaced at the glass of whiskey in his hand as he sat on the couch next to the books that Ira had left there. Since Ira vanished, he had touched nothing in his library, leaving it the way it was. He hadn’t allowed a single Omega to visit the library. Ira's scent was so mild in the library that he was scared that it would get masked by other scents. He did not want to lose this last bit of comfort. His IT team had tracked down Jack and Alex, but the two assholes were in Melbourne. They had no role to play in Ira’s disappearance. Ira’s family had stayed strangely silent. Neither Kirra nor James had reached out to him again. What a bunch of irresponsible creeps! He took another sip of his whiskey, letting the undiluted fluid burn his throat. He hated himself for pushing Ira away. He did not know what he was angrier about. Was it the fact that Ira hadn’t turned up or was it the fact that Ira’s family did not take him into confidence? He scowled at his drink as his thoughts ran wild. “Baaa…by!” Monike’s voice rang in the living room in an irritating sing-song voice, pulling Liam out of his ponderings. He dashed to the living room before Monike advanced any further. Monike came over to him and snaked her body around his as he entered the living room. “It is only three weeks now. We will soon be engaged!” she said, smacking her lips as she eyes his. He knew what was coming next. He did not stop her as she held his head with both her palms and pulled him down to kiss. What was the point of trying to stop her? Leo hadn’t responded yet. He might end up marrying the b***h anyway. NO!! His wolf plunged forward and pushed Monuke. The strength of a Lycan was too much and Monike almost flew. She landed on the couch behind her. As her back hit against the soft backrest of the couch her angry eyes implored him. Staring at Liam, she flipped her head to the side to take her hair away from her face. “What the f**k is wrong with you?” “Sorry! It's my wolf. He just received a message that we need to be in a meeting. I am stressed out Monike. Please understand!” “I am stressed out too! Do you know how many things can go wrong in an engagement? I have been working round the clock, and this is how you treat me.” She sniffled. Liam felt terrible. It wasn’t her fault. She didn’t even know what was happening! She was being herself and getting punished for no fault of hers. “I am sorry. I will catch up with you later. Please leave now. Bella and Ben are almost here.” She stomped out of the room, leaving him alone with his rebelling wolf who huffed and puffed in anger. How dare you let her touch us? His wolf chided. I can’t say no to her yet! Liam tried to reason with him. Well! You better figure out what you are going to do, or I will rip her apart. Then you can explain to her stiff ass dad the reasons why his daughter is shredded like a parchment! His wolf heaved and went silent. Liam had to do something! Once Bella and Ben entered the room, he asked Bella to call Leo while he mind linked Kirra. Desperate times needed desperate measures, even if it meant swallowing his pride! *****
