Chapter 12

2144 Words
Rebecca POV        Sitting across from Chase as the waitress took his order made my heart pound out of my chest as the waitress blatantly flirted and touched him. I was sure Chase could hear it from where he was sitting. I couldn’t help but glare at her, as my blood slowly boiled in anger as she lingered for longer than she was supposed to. I know I have no right to feel that way since I haven’t accepted him as my mate, but I still feel the mate bond with him and there is no denying that I find him extremely irresistible. Chase makes eye contact with me as the waitress practically clings to him as she takes his order, and not once does he break it as he tells the waitress what he would like to drink. As soon as the waitress moved on, I could see his body relax as he finally broke eye contact with me. I couldn’t help but feel satisfied that the waitress failed to get his attention because he was focused on me the entire time. I quickly shake that thought off and reprimand myself for feeling these things for Chase. It won’t be good for either of us if I act on my feelings. As much as I would love to get to know Chase and grow our bond and become his mate, it just isn’t going to be possible.       I’ve been trying to convince myself that I need to pull the trigger and reject him as my mate, but I can’t seem to go through with it, and trust me, I’ve tried. Three times I have walked up to his door about to knock, but every time I come close, it’s as if a force is stopping me from doing so.       I notice Christa glancing at me every once in a while, with concern etched on her face, so I do my best to put a smile on my face and pretend I’m enjoying myself. As dinner progresses, I find myself enjoying the company around me instead of having to put on a fake smile. The chef does a good job putting on a show for us, and I find myself laughing with everyone as we make Eli take part in the cook’s show. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Eli being goofy. The last time I saw this side of him was when we were in high school with no cares or worries in the world. As I sat there laughing along with his antics, I felt my chest fill with warmth and a blast of nostalgia. Not once could I find myself regretting the decision to help Eli. As I glance across the table, I see Chase staring at me hungrily. I can’t control the flutter in my stomach as I lift the corners of my mouth slightly into a smile before looking down into my lap as if all of a sudden, there was something more interesting, feeling a sudden sense of shyness come over me. Once again, my emotions are conflicted, causing chaos within my mind.   **Jacob**        I’ve successfully gained the trust of the pack except for one person, Evan. Even though he doesn’t trust me, I’ve been able to infiltrate myself into the pack. I’ve also been training as a warrior as I’ve gained enough trust. It honestly wasn’t very hard. All I had to do was act like I hated Lex and his rogues as they had slaughtered my so-called pack. With my plan going as planned, I gained access to the dungeon. I make my way through the dark tunnels until I came upon the person I wanted to see.  “Hello, Alpha. I would ask you how you're doing, but I can already guess the answer, seeing how you're in nothing but rags and far from your glory days.” I say as I smirk at him. He glances at me as his eyes flash for a moment, and he turns his head away from me once more.  “If you’re here to taunt me, you can save it.” He grumbles. I look around me, making sure no one is listening. “On the contrary, I’m here to help you.” This seemed to pique his interest. “Now, why would I believe someone like you?” He asks, skepticism in his eyes. “We need someone like you who knows every in and out of this pack. You also know everything about the members of this pack, and that could come into great use for us.” He lifts his eyebrows in curiosity now. I have seemed to have caught his attention.  “And who exactly is us?”  “Lex. He has promised you great things if you agree to help us.” “What does he want exactly?” “He wants the girl.” “Ah yes, Christa. That girl has become a real nuisance for me. Making my plans for Eli nearly impossible.” “So, then you know she’s still alive?” I question him. “Yes, I know. I have to admit I was pretty happy to hear about her death. With her out of the way, I thought my plans would finally go smoothly. Instead, I’m in here!” He growls; his eyes are glowing once more; his wolf is threatening to come forward. “Well, I think you’ll be pleased to hear that Lex has taken a liking to her and knows that she is still alive. He has found a way to break their mate bond so that he can bond with her himself.” The Alpha gets up and walks closer to his cell bars taking hold of them. “I’m listening.”  “We need to find a way to get to her to complete this ceremony, and we’re running low on time. The ritual has to be done during Blood Moon.” “When exactly is the Blood Moon and what can I possibly do when I am trapped in this… this hell hole?” “It’s in a couple of weeks. Not to worry, I plan on freeing you and bringing you to Lex.” “How can I know he doesn’t plan on killing me?” “Trust me; if he wanted you dead, you would already be six feet underground.” “What does he plan on doing with my son. Nothing as long as he gets what he wants.”  “I will only help if he can assure my son’s safety.”  “As you wish. Be ready to go tomorrow night.” I say as I turn around and leave the dark, musty tunnels.    **Pete**        Ever since we found out about what Eli’s father had done to the Luna, everyone has been on edge. You can feel the devastation within the pack when Eli had announced the circumstances he was in and why our old Alpha had been put away. Some pack members were in denial, and some were livid, calling for him to receive the death penalty for what he had done to our beloved Luna.       Since all this has happened, what has bothered me the most is that Christa has been doing her best to avoid me. The first time I had seen her was when she showed us her new disguise as a completely different person. I was still getting used to the fact that she was able to use magic, but when I had finally seen her, she couldn’t make eye contact with me, even as we sat at a table together to have dinner in what felt like ages. Something was definitely going on and now I was determined to find out what that something was.   **Jenna**        “I still can’t believe our previous Alpha killed our Luna!” One of the physical therapists says as we work with our clients.  “I can. He always did seem to be more distant with the Luna, never really showing affection towards her. I always thought it was weird!” Another therapist replies. Since Eli had called the entire pack together to tell us the truth of what actually happened that fateful night, people have been whispering and talking about it none stop.  “What do you think, Jenna?” One of the girls asks curiously about my opinion on the matter. Unfortunately, I haven’t really been able to focus on the topic as the others have. My head has been elsewhere. I shrug my shoulders.  “I don’t know. I think it’s really sad. It’s confusing how an Alpha could do that to his own mate. Most werewolves would turn rogue if they lost their mate, let alone think about having them murdered. It doesn’t make sense.” I say as they nod in agreeance. They both go back to chatting amongst themselves.       I go back to working my client's leg stretching his muscles out to help his injury heal correctly but even while doing this my head is somewhere else or more specifically someone else. My wolf has been becoming more and more depressed lately. It’s been hard to eat and sleep. I’ve been losing weight and people are starting to notice that I haven’t been my happy-go-lucky self. My wolf whimpers and howls in sadness all night bringing tears to my eyes. I can’t seem to get Pete out of my mind ever since I met him. I felt a connection with him that I have never felt with anyone else, but it doesn’t seem as if he feels it with me.       I can’t understand why? Especially since he has a mate, there’s no way he can be my mate as well, but my wolf seems to think he is hers. So, she cries for him every night. We haven’t seen him ever since that night on the bench, but I continue to feel drawn to him. Maybe I can go and see him again, give him proper condolences for losing his sister. I know that he really loves his sister, and it must be tearing him apart. I can make a pie to bring to him. It would be a perfect excuse to be able to talk to him, even if for just a moment. My wolf, Eve, seems to agree with this idea, and she immediately perks up, excited to see Pete again.   **Christa**        Laying in bed with Eli, I can’t help but sigh as I’m deep in thought. Eli turns towards me with his elbows propping his head, his brows creased in concern. “What’s making you sigh like that after having such a great night?” He says, taking my hand as he lightly kisses my knuckles. I turn toward Eli, propping my head on my elbows the same way Eli is. “I just can’t bring myself to tell Pete about Monika. I don’t know how I’m going to tell him. I’ve been procrastinating, and I know I can’t hold off much longer. I can’t even look him in the eyes?” I sigh once again. Eli wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me closer to him as he lays on his back. I rest my head on his chest and listen to his steady heartbeat. “You know you don’t have to do this on your own. We can tell him together but the sooner, the better. It’ll be like ripping off a bandaid. The longer you take to tell him the truth, the longer he’s living a lie with that woman. It’ll hurt him, but once that bond from the potion wears off, he’ll have a chance to find his true mate.” I nod my head thinking about Eli’s words.  “Okay, I’ll call him in the morning and have him come over so we can tell him,” I say, starting to drift off to sleep from the comfort of my mate's warmth. Right before I fall asleep, I feel Eli kiss the top of my head and whisper, “Sleep tight, my love.”
