Pete POV
For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling my wolf getting restless. He can feel something is amiss and he doesn’t like it. Ever since we met that girl that had helped Christa, it’s like a switch was flicked on and my wolf was suddenly alive with something new. I can’t seem to make any sense of it. Monika has been acting strangely, and she’s been gone for a week in a half. I also can’t help but feel someone is watching me as I get ready to shift into my wolf to go for a run. I look around to catch a scent or see anyone nearby, but I don’t see anyone. I can’t linger on it though as my mind wonders to Christa. Ever since I had learned that this Sigma wolf is after her, I can’t relax. I keep busy training along with Chase for the impending war that’s coming. I know everyone in the pack feels it even if they don’t know the details; they know that a powerful Sigma wolf is out for us. The tension in the pack is at an all-time high but Eli is doing is a good job keeping everyone calm and focused. He’s making sure women and children have the capability to protect themselves if need be and I know that he would give his life to keep my sister safe.
I take off into the woods near my home in my wolf form and lose myself to my wolf while he hunts and searches for wandering rogues too close to our territory.
**Jenna**
After yesterday, I made the decision to bake Pete an apple pie today since I have the day off. Once it’s finished cooling off, I pack it in a pie box and hop in my car to drive to his house. The closer I get the more nervous I get to see him. Normally, I’m not so bold but my wolf is really pushing me to see him. I’ve always been the shy, quiet type. So, I’m a bit out of my comfort zone doing this. When I pull up the sky is beginning to turn to dusk with beautiful pinks and pastels. I admire how beautiful his home is. It reminds me of a cottage from fairytales. It’s perfect and peaceful. I take a deep breath and the smell of fresh grass and pine hits my nose. As I walk closer to his door, I catch his scent and it’s the most delicious scent I’ve ever smelled. He smells of cedar and sandalwood with a hint of mint. Already I feel like I’m at home here. As I’m about to knock on his door, a woman comes out of nowhere and approaches me.
“Who are you?’ The woman asks as she gets closer to me.
“Uhm… I’m Jenna.” I say as I hold my hand out for her to shake. She looks at my hand with a smirk and crosses her arms. I can’t help but feel intimidated, so I clear my throat and pull my hand back.
“So, Jenna… what are you doing coming to my best friend’s mate’s house where you don’t belong?” I knew Pete has a mate but hearing it out loud made my heart drop into my stomach and I could feel my heart c***k at knowing I would never have a chance with him. That reality made my wolf whimper, but I couldn’t allow this girl to see my emotions. I know she’s the type of girl who would see it as a weakness and use it against me, so I straighten myself out and put a smile on my face.
“Well… I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name?” She looks me up and down as if she is sizing me up. She obviously doesn’t feel threatened by me.
“Marcy.”
“Well, Marcy, I was just dropping an apple pie off and give him my condolences. I just wanted to make sure he’s doing ok.”
“Well, Jenna, he’s doing just fine. You can go ahead and take your pie and go home. He’s well taken care of by his mate, Monika if you know what I mean.” She says with a smirk as she winks at me. Then, the c***k I had felt in my heart ended up shattering into pieces. All I could do was nod as I quickly turned and walked back to my car and as I took off, I looked into my rear-view mirror only to see the woman was no longer there. I scolded myself for attempting to see him. If I had just minded my own business and stayed away, I wouldn’t be feeling so heartbroken. I knew better, I know he has a mate, I know he’s unavailable, but I just couldn’t help the fact that I feel a bond with him, I couldn’t ignore that every time I was near him, he felt like home, I couldn’t help that my wolf responded to him in a way she’s never responded to anyone. She’s convinced that he’s our mate, but I keep telling her it’s not possible.
“He’s our mate, Jenna.”
“NO, HE ISN’ T, Opal!” I yell, “HE CAN’T BE, and if it wasn’t for you pushing me to see him, we wouldn’t be hurting this bad right now. Just leave it alone, ok. He’s not ours and he never will be!” I say as Opal disappears into the back of my mind whimpering.
“Opal, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.” I apologize, but it’s too late. I know I’ve hurt her deeply.
Once I arrive home, I climb into bed and cry myself to sleep.
**Pete**
During my run, I all of a sudden felt a sharp stabbing pain in my chest that nearly knocked me off my feet. All of a sudden, my wolf howled in deep sorrow, feeling a sense of sadness and pain that didn’t belong to us but still felt like ours all the same. All I could think was that something was wrong. Maybe something happened to Monika? I immediately rushed back to the house changing back into my human form. I grabbed my phone from out of my pants and I see a couple of missed calls from Christa. I immediately call her back and she answers after the first couple of rings.
“Hey, is everything ok? What’s going on?”
“Oh, yeah, I mean I guess everything is good, but I was calling because I need to talk to you about something important.”
“Can’t you tell me over the phone?’
“No, this is something that needs to be talked about in person. I tried to get a hold of you earlier so we could talk this afternoon. Where were you?”
“I was out for a run.” I didn’t want to go into details about what exactly I was doing. Christa had enough stress; I didn’t want her worrying about me as well.
“Okay, well can you come over tonight? I really need to tell you something.”
“This can’t wait until tomorrow?”
“No, I’ve already procrastinated long enough. This is really important and it’s something you need to know.” I can’t help but let out a sigh as I rub my temples feeling the stress coming on.
“Give me an hour, okay?’
“Alright, see you soon.”
**Christa**
I can’t stop pacing back and forth as my nerves begin to get the better of me. I feel like I’ve been waiting for hours since I got off of the phone with Pete. My heart is racing, my hands are so clammy, I can’t stop wiping them on my jeans.
“Sweetheart, you need to relax,” Eli says as he takes a hold of my hand and pulls me to him so that I’m standing between his legs as he sits in his chair and looks up at me with a gentleness in his eyes.
“I know, I know. I can’t help it though. I can’t stop thinking about how he’s going to react. I mean he’s already marked, Monika. What if he’s missed his chance to have his true mate because of her? How is it going to affect his wolf? I have all of these questions running through my head and they’re all worst-case scenarios. What if he goes crazy and turns rogue?” I say pulling away from Eli once again to pace.
“Christa, Pete is a really strong wolf. I doubt this is going to make him turn rogue especially since Monika isn’t his chosen mate in the first place.” All I can do is nod my head. What Eli’s said does make sense, but it doesn’t stop me from worrying.
Finally, I hear a knock on the door and run to answer it knowing that it’s Pete.
“It’s about dang time! You sure took your precious time getting here, did you?” I say in an annoyed huff. Pete just chuckles as he gives me a bear hug before putting me down.
“It’s good to see you too, Lil’ Nugget.” I can’t help but roll my eyes at him as he walks into the apartment as I close the door behind him.
“So, what was so important you couldn’t wait until tomorrow, hmm?”
“Well, let’s go sit in the living room so we can talk. First, can I get you something to drink?” I ask once again trying to prolong telling him what needs to be said. Pete shakes his head no, “I’m good.”
“Okay, well, I need a drink!” I say as I quickly take off into the kitchen. I pour myself a glass of Jack Daniels honey whiskey. I’ll need something strong for this. I call out from the kitchen,
“Are you sure you don’t want anything?” I peak my head around the corner to look at them sitting in the living room patiently waiting for me to get my crap together. Both of them just shake their heads.
I go back into the kitchen and down the glass before I pour myself another. I finally make my way into the living room and sit down next to Eli as he silently supports me and gives me courage.
“Pete, I honestly don’t know the best way to tell you this, and I know it’s going to be a shock, but I want you to know that I will always be here for you to support you no matter what and that I love you very much.” I pause taking a big gulp.
“Christa, what’s going on?” Pete asks as his body becomes more tense. I can hear his heart rate pick up.
“Pete, this isn’t easy for me to tell you this.”
“Christa, just come out with it!” Pete says impatiently. I move next to him on the couch and take both of his hands and look into his eyes.
“Pete…” Just then the phone begins to ring as an alarm sounds off.
We all jump up as Eli rushes to the phone to answer. Pete and I watch Eli as his face turns dark and his eyes flash with his wolf threatening to come out.
“I’ll be right there!” He says as he hangs up. Pete, you’re coming with me! Eli’s eyes then glaze over as he mind-links with someone. Then he turns to me,
“Amanda is coming over shortly to stay with you. Do not answer the door for anyone. Amanda has a key. Please stay here, don’t go anywhere until we come back.” Eli commands almost panicked.
“Wait, what’s going on?” I ask as Eli and Pete are quickly heading out the door. Eli looks at me and his eyes soften once more before they quickly harden again.
“My father has escaped!”
