SELENE The classroom was half full when I got there. I slid into my usual seat near the window and pulled out my notebook. History class, one of the few periods where I could almost pretend everything was normal, where I could sit and take notes and not think about activation or hunters or pack politics. Mara dropped into the seat next to me right before the bell rang. "Hey," she said, settling her bag down. "You okay? You look exhausted." I looked at her. "I am fine," I said. "Just tired." I added. "You keep saying that," Mara said, she was watching my face carefully. "But you look like something is actually wrong, like something real and maybe bad is happening." I could have deflected, I could have made a joke or changed the subject, but something about the way she was looking at
