Chapter 7
Accalia POV
My legs wobbled as we stepped back, the rogues kept increasing in number.
“Oh my goodness!” I whimpered.
“Don't show any traces of fear, they feed on your fears too.” Alpha Ulfred's guard whispered to me.
This was going to be the end for me. Fear or not, I had no ounce of power to fight these dangerous-looking wolves.
“I'll distract them, look for a place to hide.” He commanded me.
I was too stunned to speak, my legs felt too heavy to move. I felt myself drowning in a state of panic.
“Accalia!” Ulfred's guard called out to me.
The rogues snarled at us, strategically surrounding us in their numbers.
I managed to count and there were ten of them. There was no way I could hide from this number of wolves.
The rogues sized Ulfred's guard up, accessing the both of us. For rogue werewolves, they moved in well-calculated steps.
Someone should make the bold step to start this fight before I lose my mind. I wondered.
“Let us go freely and I promise not to hurt any of you.” Ulfred's guard shouted to the rogues.
‘Was he being serious right now? Are we not supposed to beg them instead of threatening them?’ I wondered.
I looked at him as if he had lost his mind but he gave me a reassuring look that said ‘Everything is under control.’
I found it hard to believe because it was practically ten rogue werewolves against one since I had no power.
No matter the amount of strength he possessed, I doubted if he would be able to win this war and accepted my fate as a dead person.
The rogues snarled back at us in response to Ulfred's guard's statement.
“I'm warning you!” Ulfred's guard shouted.
They snarled back.
“They don't like threats,” I whispered to him.
“I'm sure they do not like apologies either.” He stated defiantly.
“Or you don't?” I asked him.
“Whatever.” He hissed.
“I'm not begging a pack of I'll mannered werewolves.” He added.
“Wow, the fruit doesn't fall too far from the tree,” I whispered.
“Why haven't you started the war then?” I asked him.
“Because I do not make the first move.” He answered.
“Your ego is off the rooftop,” I stated.
“We're in a f*****g cave.” He reminded me.
For someone in the face of danger, his sense of humor was on the high side.
As soon as the rogues successfully had us in the middle of the circle, one of them charged towards us.
I screamed in fear as I watched Alpha Ulfred's guards charge back, shaping into a wolf midway.
He let out a very loud howl and nudged me to the side of the cave as the rogues focused on him.
I hid myself beside a rock and watched how they combated with each other.
Ulfred's guard was doing a good job fighting off the rogues but his strength was nothing compared to their number.
Soon the rest of Alpha Ulfred's guards arrived, and then it dawned on me that the howl was a cry for backup.
They charged towards the werewolves, tearing at their fleshes and rendering them invalid.
One of the rogues saw me hiding and charged towards me. I sucked in a sharp breath, unsure of if I should stand up and run or just let him kill me.
In a twinkle of an eye, Ulfred's guard charged towards it and delivered a huge blow to its shoulder blade, causing it to stumble.
My heart melted at his gesture while fighting for his life, he was still looking out for me.
Maybe he was being truthful and wanted me to escape as he had said.
I couldn't help but wonder why he would risk going against Alpha Ulfred's order just to protect me.
The rogue staggered for a while and soon regained its power and charged at Ulfred's guard who was already looking exhausted.
He shot me a reassuring glare before charging at the rogue who successfully knocked him down.
My heart skipped a beat. This was the end for me. I closed my eyes as I could no longer watch.
There was a loud snarl close to me, I instinctively opened my eyes to see the rogue wolf writhing in pain.
Apparently, one of the guards had seen the rogue attack the top guard and had come to rescue him.
After finishing off the rogue with a last blow, he turned around as if he were looking for something.
“I smell her here.” He told the top guard.
“I do too and that was why I traced her to this place.” He answered.
“Let us finish off with the rogues, then we can proceed to find her dead body. There is no way she is still alive.” He added and the guard nodded and left.
I let out a deep sigh of relief as soon as the guard was out of sight.
I looked around to ensure there were no rogues lurking around and waiting to pounce on me.
There was a tap on my shoulder and I gasped.
“Go into that place. Don't leave until I come back for you.” Alpha Ulfred's top guard told me, pointing at what looked like a little entrance before dashing off.
I obeyed him and quickly rushed into the place while waiting patiently for him.
Soon, I was beginning to hear footsteps, I wasn't sure it was him so I made sure to be as quiet as possible.
“This was where I got a whiff of her scent the last time.” I heard someone say.
“I smell it too. Her dead body should be here somewhere then.” Another answered.
I held my breath again so that they wouldn't get a whiff of me as the compost was still masking my body scent.
“Guys, let's go. I'm sure the rogues have taken her body away as meat.” I heard the top guard's familiar voice.
I was quite relieved he was back. “That's true.” Another guard stated.
“I will stay back to trace where these rogues are coming from so that I can alert the pack and ensure they do not pass our border.” He told them.
“We could assist you.” One of them stated.
“No, you guys are badly injured. You need to be treated.” He told them.
“This will heal in no time.” One objected.
“We have to be careful to ensure the wounds are not infected, remember?” He told them.
“Don't worry, I'll call for your help if I need any. But I doubt it, I just need to make a fast survey, that's all.” He managed to convince them.
I could hear their footsteps receding as they left the spot they were in. I heaved a sigh of relief.
“You can come out now.” I heard him say. I peeped to ensure he was the one before coming out.
“Sorry for the mild disturbance.” He stated.
“Mild disturbance?” I asked in confusion.
Was he referring to the rogues or the guards that were searching for me?
“The rogue's interruption.” He answered.
“Are you serious? I should be thanking you for saving my life.” I whispered.
“You don't need to whisper anymore, nobody is here.” He stated.
I wasn't surprised at his arrogance, every guard of Alpha Ulfred's had it in them.
“Well, at least you believe me now.” He said softly, looking at me.
“I'm still surprised as to why you would do this,” I stated.
“Like I said, you are brave and I admire your courage.” He stated.
The more he talked about my bravery, the more confused I got. How would he look at me and call me brave? I spent the whole of this journey hiding like a coward.
“I believe in you.” He said, stopping in his tracks.
“That's the exit. You're safe now.” He added, pointing at the end of the tunnel.
I smiled at him. “Thank you so much, the Luna will reward your kindness,” I stated.
“More like she will punish me for disobeying my alpha but I get your point.” He joked.
I laughed at his joke. It was the first time I was given a burst of genuine laughter after leaving my maids. Then it occurred to me that they were still in the hands of the wicked alpha.
“Please take care of my maids for me.” I pleaded with him.
“Sounds like more work.” He joked.
“But I will.” He added, this time making sure his voice sounded more serious.
“Goodbye.” I waved at him, with tears falling from my eyes.
He bowed his head in return and started to walk back.
I looked ahead of me, there was a small village in sight although I still had some kilometers of woods to pass by.
I silently hoped and prayed there were no rogues or wild animals.
I decided to believe the top guard, he said the woods were safe so it was. The same way he said he would protect me and he did.
I felt bad for not at least getting his name. But in my heart, I silently prayed that Luna would reward him and not punish him.
