The Crown of Ashes

For two decades, Princess Seraphina Valeris has followed one rule:

Never fall in love.

As heir to the throne of Elyria, she shoulders a legacy darker than most – an ancient curse that has plagued her family for generations. Each royal who is gifted the kingdom’s power devastates the person they love most.

Intent on breaking that cycle, Seraphina has built thick walls around her heart and learned to keep her future under strict control.

Until the day a prisoner with silver eyes is brought to the capital.

Rowan has been enslaved in chains and accused of unspeakable crimes that no one dares to question. Yet when he and Seraphina touch, identical markings sear their wrists, bonding them with an ancient magic that should no longer exist.

As hidden enemies awaken and deadly secrets unearthed long threaten to rip the kingdom apart, Seraphina and Rowan find themselves increasingly intertwined by fate, each other, and a love they can’t deny.

But the closer they get, the darker everything becomes.

Not only is the curse that haunts the royal family real, it may have been unleashed by them.

And the force that grows between them could have the power to tear the kingdom – and everything they love – wide apart.

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Kristin Cashore, The Crown of Ashes is sweeping fantasy romance about choosing to love when the world tries everything in its power to tell you not to. Full of secrets, treachery, forbidden romance, and the types of choices that could break your heart, book two of the Falling******** is here to steal your breath away.

*This review will contain spoilers for book one.

So you guys know how much I absolutely adored the first book right?

The thing about Crown of Midnight was the fact that it made me extremely anxious. There was so much that could’ve gone wrong with Crown of Ashes that I just wanted to throw my hands up and avoid this book FOREVER.

Thankfully Jennifer did not disappoint with this conclusion.

First things first, can we appreciate how freaking GORGEOUS that COVER IS? !

Ok moving on.

Jennifer did an amazing job with this sequel. She was able to create a beautiful story that not only gave us answers to the secrets that were revealed in Crown of Midnight but also gave us so much more.

We were able to explore the world more in-depth and learned more about the magic that Seraphina and her family are blessed (& cursed) with.

One thing that I really enjoyed about Crown of Ashes was the fact that we were able to learn more about Rowan.

His character was so intriguing to me throughout book one because we only ever saw him through Seraphina’s perspective. I loved learning about his background and his strengths.

But what I REALLY loved was Seraphina and Rowan’s relationship.

Yes, there were times where I wanted to shake Seraphina because of the rookie mistakes she was making but watching these two fall in love and build something so beautiful was really wonderful.

While reading this book I found myself thinking about how their relationship was built off of honesty and trust.

They were able to learn everything about each other and accept each other for who they were.

They encouraged each other when one was feeling weak and comfort each other when they were feeling afraid.

That type of connection is rare to come by not only in books but in real life.

I loved every moment of Seraphina and Rowan’s romance.

Jennifer was able to mix together the perfect amount of sweetness and steam to keep me hooked until the very last page.

If you enjoyed book one then you HAVE to read Crown of Ashes.

It was full of all the things I could want in a sequel.

Jennifer created amazing characters that I fell in love with, an intriguing plot that had me constantly guessing, and the sweetest romance that had me swooning until the very end.

Chapter 1:The Girl Who Could Not Love
The bells of Elyria rang seven times across the capital. From the highest balcony of the royal palace, Princess Seraphina Valeris watched thousands gather in the square below. Their cheers echoed through the morning air, bright and joyful. She envied them. The people could love whom they wished. They could marry for affection, friendship, or passion. She could do none of those things. A cold breeze tugged at the silver strands woven into her dark hair. Below, merchants filled the streets, children raced between market stalls, and musicians played songs celebrating the kingdom's Founding Day. Everyone was celebrating. Everyone except her. "You should smile." Seraphina glanced over her shoulder. Captain Cassian stood in the doorway leading back into the palace. Sunlight reflected from the polished silver of his armor. His expression carried the familiar mixture of concern and amusement she had known for years. "The people expect their future queen to look pleased," he added. Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "The people expect many things." Cassian laughed softly. "True." For a moment neither spoke. The silence between them felt comfortable. Dangerously comfortable. That was why Seraphina immediately stepped away from the balcony rail. Distance was safer. Always safer. Cassian noticed. He always noticed. His smile faded slightly. "You're doing it again." "Doing what?" "Running." She folded her arms. "I am standing perfectly still." "You know that's not what I mean." The words struck closer than she liked. Before she could respond, the palace doors burst open. A young messenger stumbled into the room, breathless. "Your Highness!" Seraphina straightened. "What is it?" The boy bowed quickly. "A prisoner has been captured near the northern border." Cassian frowned. "That hardly seems urgent enough to interrupt the Founding Day ceremony." The messenger swallowed. "It isn't the prisoner, sir." A strange feeling crawled down Seraphina's spine. "What about him?" The messenger looked nervous. "As soon as he was brought through the city gates... every protection rune along the northern wall shattered." The room fell silent. Cassian's face hardened. Protection runes had guarded Elyria for centuries. Nothing should have been capable of breaking them. Nothing. "Who is this prisoner?" Seraphina asked. "No one knows." The messenger shook his head. "He carried no documents. No insignia. No family crest." "And his name?" "He refuses to give one." Cassian exchanged a glance with Seraphina. Neither liked mysteries. Especially magical ones. "Bring him to the palace dungeons," Cassian ordered. "He is already there." The messenger hesitated. "There is one more thing." The unease in Seraphina's chest deepened. "What?" The boy's voice dropped to a whisper. "When the guards searched him..." He paused. "They found the Mark." Every trace of color drained from Cassian's face. Impossible. The Mark belonged to a legend. A myth. A story mothers told their children beside fireplaces. No one had seen it for hundreds of years. Seraphina forced herself to remain calm. "Leave us." The messenger bowed and hurried away. The moment the doors closed, Cassian spoke. "If this is true, we must inform the Queen." "We will." "But first?" Seraphina looked toward the distant northern towers where the prison cells lay hidden beneath layers of stone. Something inside her stirred. Curiosity. Fear. A strange pull she couldn't explain. "First," she said quietly, "I want to see him myself." --- That night, long after the celebrations ended, Seraphina descended into the palace dungeons. Torchlight flickered against damp stone walls. The air smelled of iron and rain. Two guards opened the final gate. "He hasn't spoken a word, Your Highness." Seraphina nodded. The heavy door creaked open. For a moment she saw only darkness. Then a man stepped forward from the shadows. Tall. Dark-haired. His wrists bound in enchanted chains. But it wasn't the chains that caught her attention. It was his eyes. Silver. Not gray. Silver. As if moonlight itself lived inside them. The stranger looked directly at her. No fear. No respect. No surprise. Only recognition. As though he had been expecting her. Then his gaze dropped to her wrist. His expression changed instantly. Shock. The same strange heat spread through Seraphina's arm. She followed his gaze. A faint golden light glowed beneath her skin. For the first time in her life. A mark was appearing. And on the prisoner's wrist... An identical mark blazed to life. The stranger's voice broke the silence. It was the first word anyone had heard him speak. "Impossible." The torches exploded. Darkness swallowed the room. And somewhere inside the darkness, the prisoner laughed.
