Chapter 9 Godric

3957 Words
Jordan told me that he gave Selaria a book on teleporting, but I already knew that. I am shocked that she isn’t able to do it, but was able to send people to another location. I thought it was the same thing, sending someone to another location and doing it yourself. But I am glad that he was able to help her and able to help her keep her secret. It is another reason why I am glad that they are here, other than the fact that it’s another set of eyes and protection if needed.   I still can’t believe that Ezera was taken and how they figured out that Derek was his son or even involved? I wanted to ask my Uncle but I don’t know how to broach the subject. We all came here under different surnames so they didn’t know who our real parents were, in case they were taken, but still, sending Derek away was just precaution and I am glad that we did.   I'm glad that I haven't had too many questions asked about Derek's disappearance, I wasn't even sure what I was going to say other than "I don't know." I'm glad that he's safe, but it's weird not having him around helping me work things out, the others would go to him and only come to me if they couldn't find him. It's only been two days and already I wish he was here.   A knock on my door stirs me from my thoughts and I walk over to answer it wondering who it could be and what they might want.   Before I open it I ask. "Who is it?"   "It's Keven." I hear from the other side of the door.   Opening the door I find that it's not just Keven but a couple of the other guys standing there as well.   "What do you guys want?" I ask letting them in, surprised to see them since they are meant to be heading to the cafeteria for breakfast.   No-one said anything until I closed the door and then Jordan starts talking. "There is a rumour that Elder Zarconian is going to call you into his office."   I’m not surprised that I was going to be called into his office, but I am surprised that they are telling me before the instructors or those that work for him.   "So?" I ask trying to seem like it isn't a big deal.   They all look at each other with shocked looks on their face, I’m guessing that wasn’t what they were expecting.   "Aren't you worried?" Keven asks after a few minutes.   "Why should I be worried?" I ask sitting back on my bed and finish putting my shoes on. I stand up and notice that they look confused and worried. "Look I expected that they would question me in regards to Derek suddenly disappearing, but we have a plan." I continue and walk over to my door and open it hoping that they leave and don't keep questioning me.   I am glad that they quickly recover and walk out of my room one at time and each of them giving me either a worried or confused look, which is good because I can't tell them that there is no plan.  I feel Selaria and can feel that she is thinking of a plan and with what I can see, there are a few that she has in mind.   I follow the guys out and lock my door glad that Selaria is helping me figure things out now that I don't have Derek here to help.   "Of course and I'll always will be, and don’t worry you won't be in any danger, I can teleport you from where you are to any location." I hear her say.   I'm surprised by what she just said, but I'm also glad because now I have a sort of plan. The guys must have asked me a question because they are staring at me.   "What?" I ask looking at each of them.   It felt like ages ago but it was only a couple of days ago. It's crazy how fast how things change.   "I asked what is your plan and what will you need us to do?" Jordan whispers looking around us making sure he isn't being overhead. I look at him and raise an eyebrow, questioning him, but I know I have to tell them something or they are going to keep asking.   "Ask Selaria, it's her plan." I say and notice that we are at the cafeteria. I walk in and see that there is a really long line.   "Thanks." I hear Selaria say sarcastically and that's when I feel that she's close, I look over at Hannah Doogle’s table and see her laughing, I'm guessing at something one of them said.   One of the girls at the table points at me and I hear the echo of the question, she wanted to know why I was staring at them, and Selaria just shrugged her shoulders and Hannah said that it was probably because my roommate could be a traitor. Both Selaria and I are surprised, but I hide my surprise, and I get my breakfast and head to the usual table.   I relay what I just heard about Derek to the others and only the guys are surprised by this, the girls aren't surprised by this at all.   "It's all over the girls dorm, we think Varsity started the rumour around the girls dorm and we are sure that it's what Elder Zarconian thinks." Lucy says.   I am surprised by what she said and I can feel that Selaria is also surprised, which is a little confusing and concerning.   "I'm still new and I'm not going to classes either.” I hear her say and it makes sense, and I start feeling less stressed.   The others must have noticed or one of them asked me a question again. "What?" I am starting to hate that I’m not able to listen to what is going on around me.   "It takes a lot of practice." I hear Selaria say.   "You seem to be able to do it without any problems."   "Are you listening Godric?" Jordan asks, seeming to get upset that I ignored them again. "Sorry no, what were you saying?" I ask again and this time I look at them and use all my strength to focus on them and whatever they were wanting to know.   It was Amira that spoke, Derek and I are pretty sure that Jordan has a thing for her. "When do we speak to Selaria about the plan and will you need all of us?"   I am shocked that she asked the question, but it was a good question. "I'm not sure when you will be able to talk to her about it, but right now she doesn't need any help and when she does either she or I will let you know." I tell them and I feel a confirmation from Selaria.   The rest of breakfast was just talking about our classes and what we are going to do on the weekend if the ban hasn't been lifted.  Selaria and I didn't speak much since it was hard for me to focus on the conversation going on at my table and listen to her.   I arriv at my PT lesson to find Elder Zarconian's assistant waiting for me with my Instructor.   "Mr Black, Elder Zarconian would like to speak with you." And then he heads back inside the Academy. My Instructor gestures with his head for me to follow Elder Zarconian's assistant.   He doesn't even look back to see if I am following him, he just keeps walking and doesn't speak until we get to Elder Zarconian's office, where the receptionist is sitting and typing on the computer. I was the only one that kept my last name and that was only because when my father was killed by the Elders and my Uncle was able to convince them that he, my mother and myself weren’t part of anything that my father was doing.   She looks up when we walk in and she presses a button and it only takes a couple of seconds and Elder Zarconian opens his office door. As soon as the door opens, Elder Zarconian's assistant walks to a door on the right into his office, and leaves me with Elder Zarconian.   "Mr Black please come in." He says moving so I could walk through. "Can I get you something to drink?" He asks when I walk in and closes the door behind me.   "No thanks." I say trying to be polite and wait for him to tell me if I can sit or not.   I am glad that I can feel Selaria and I am even more grateful that she is ready to get me out if and when I need her to.   Elder Zarconian walks to his desk and sits down. I always thought the desk was too big for one person, but I guess he was trying to make a statement or he was trying to compensate for something else.   "Please sit down." He says smiling like he had just won a prize or swallowed a canary.   I sit down and do my best not to look worried, which is fairly easy since Selaria is ready to get me out if it seems like something isn't right.   "Do you know why you are here?" He asks still smiling. Someone needs to show him how to smile so it's not so creepy.   "No." I say, hoping he won't see that I am lying, I know exactly why I was here and I had to think of how I was going to get out of this.   He looks at me intently, as if trying to see something that might give him an indication that I might be lying or telling him the truth.   “You were Derek’s roommate and we were wondering if you have told us everything.” He says tilting his head slightly as if questioning me and hoping that this would make me tell him the truth.   I don’t know what to say, I have been told that Elder Zarconian knows when someone is lying, no-one knows how though. I don’t know if I can lie and get away with it or if I should stretch the truth. My Uncle always told me that if I lie and I want someone to believe me. than I have to believe that the lie is the truth, but I’m not sure that it will work on Elder Zarconian.   He sits there patently with a look on his face that told me that he knows that I know something and is testing me on whether or not I will tell him the truth. I don’t even know if I am going to tell him some of the truth and hide the rest or just flat out lie.   I huff and sit up straight, I am still unsure of what I am going to do, but I can feel Selaria and know that no matter what she is there for me.   “I don’t know much about him, he kept to himself and a few times I heard him talk to himself, but when I walked into the bedroom he’d be lying on his bed reading a book, or he’d be at his desk studying.” I tell him, hoping it is enough for him to tell me I am free to go.   Elder Zarconian raises his eyebrows, I’m not sure if he believes my sort of truth, yes Derek did those things, but he wasn’t talking to himself he was talking to either my Uncle or his father.   “He was talking to himself?” Elder Zarconian asks placing his hands together and putting his two fore fingers to his lips. “Interesting, did you ask him about it or tell anyone about it?” He asks staring straight at me.   “No.” I say with a laugh. “Why would I?” I ask and before he can answer I continue. “I just guessed that it was helping him get through his homework or studying for a test.”   “Really?” He asks. Just one sentence and yet it holds so much weight.   “Yeah, why?” I ask hoping I didn’t just put my foot in my mouth.   "Well, now I'm wondering if there is more than what you have not told us." Elder Zarconian says, smiling his evil looking smile, as if he knows something and I am in a lot of trouble.   "Not that I can think of." I say trying to look as if I am thinking hard, which I was, but I am thinking about how to get myself out of the hole I just dug. "Nope that was the only strange thing he did that I can think of right now." I continue and hope that he believes me.   Something in the way he was looking at me said otherwise and I thought I'd have to get Selaria to get me out, but then he says. "I have some photos I want you to look at and then I want you to tell me if you recognise any of them."   He starts placing photos in front of me one by one there are about fifty photos. Some I didn't know, but there were a couple that I did know. There was Ezera and a guy that went missing last year, Bradley. I did my best to act like I didn't know them, but I am trying to look at Ezera's photo in hopes to find him. I look up and notice Elder Zarconian is studying me, so I look back down at the photos and ask. "No I don't recognise any of them, should I have?"   "We are interrogating a few of them that are still alive and we were told by one of our spies that Derek was the son of this man." He says pointing at Ezera's photo.   I am shocked, how could this have happened and who is his spy? Judging by the fact that he knows this, means that the spy is in our upper ranks and my Uncle needs to be warned. But I’m going to have to do it when there isn’t anyone else there, in case the spy is there.   I notice that Elder Zarconian is still staring at me with a curious look. I know I have to say something, but I don’t know what.   “How about you tell him that you weren’t aware of this and that you thought his father was who everyone thought it was.” I hear Selaria say.   “Nah you have to be wrong, his father is Peter Jones.” I say, hoping I sound convincing enough.   “Well that’s what we all thought, but we have been told differently and that there are others here that are part of the Rebellion.” He says sitting up straighter, if that was even possible.   I can tell that he is trying to get something out of me and I can feel that Selaria thought the same thing, but I can’t give anything away, I can’t let the others get caught.   “Really?” I ask trying to act like I am shocked by this revelation.   “Yes and seeing as how you and your friends are always hanging out with him, I’m inclined to think that maybe you and your friends are part of this Rebellion.” He says with a slight smile.   Now I know that we are in trouble and I have to somehow make him believe that we aren’t who he thinks we are, or we are all in trouble.   “Us?” I ask with a slight laugh and show as much surprise as I can master. “Yes.” He answers but he doesn’t seem impressed by my question.   “I only met the guy when I came to the Academy and that goes with the others that are in our little group.” I say trying to think of another way to get him to believe me, and that’s when I remember the Watchers and what they can do. “If you don’t believe me, ask the Watchers, they can show you that when we all arrived we didn’t join as a group until a few months of being here.” I continue hoping this will show him that my friends and I aren’t part of the Rebellion.   “Well if you aren’t then have there been any others that you have seen Derek hanging out with?” He asks sounding frustrated that I have given him an alibi of sorts for the rest of us.   “Not really, but we only really hang out at meal times, sometimes study group and sometimes when we are allowed to leave the Academy to town.” I answer feeling more confident that my friends and I were in the clear.   “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” I hear Selaria say, sounding really worried.   I don’t understand why she is getting worried, he was starting to believe my lie and I can see that he is really thinking about what I was saying. I hear the bell for classes and wonder how much longer I was going to be here, but I don’t want to bring up the fact that the bell rang just in case he thinks I am in a hurry to leave his office.   “I will speak with the rest of your friends later today and I will also be speaking with the Watchers in regards to what you said.” He says glaring at me. “But I will be watching you very carefully Mr Black.”   I am hoping that is the end of it, but after what Selaria had said about not counting chickens before they hatch, I waited until Elder Zarconian says that I can leave.   “I understand.” I say trying to make sure that I don’t sound too upset about this, but I know that having meetings are going to be a lot more difficult if I am being watched and I’m going to have to distance myself from the others and Selaria. But I am glad that I have this bond with Selaria, or I’d go insane.   “I’m glad that you understand, I’ll be talking to your Uncle about our conversation and explain that maybe his nephew might be heading in the same direction as his father.” Elder Zarconian says with a smirk on his face, like he may have just captured everyone in the Rebellion.   I want to jump over the desk and rip his throat out, but I know that if I did then he’d know that I’m part of the Rebellion.   “Is there anything else?” I ask trying to rain in my anger.   “No that’s all, you may go.” He says and looks at the computer screen, which must mean that I am free to leave.   I get up and walked to the door and the moment my hand touches the door handle I hear Elder Zarconian say. “Don’t try and warn your friends that I’ll be talking to them soon, because I’ll know about it.” I turn toward him. “If you do tell them, you will be in more trouble then you could handle.”   “Yes sir.” I have to find a way to warn them that Elder Zarconian is going to interrogate them.   “I’m on it, don’t worry I’ll let them know.” I hear Selaria say and at that point I am even more grateful to have her in my head.    I wish I could have warned them myself, but I know that Elder Zarconian will be watching me and I don’t want to know what he will do if I do warn them.   I notice that I am being followed the moment I leave the office, and it isn’t just one but four following me. I am glad that Selaria is warning the others, because I definitely can’t do it myself now.   By the time I get to my class it is nearly over, but I walk in anyway, I don’t want to stay out and wait for the bell to go and have Elder Zarconian’s men report back to him that I didn’t go to class. Everyone turns and looks at me when I walk in. The Instructor had a questioning look on her face but didn’t say anything.   “Sorry Miss, I was in Elder Zarconian’s office.” I say taking my seat.   She nods her understanding and goes back to writing on the board in front of the class. She is one of the few here that are also on the Rebellions side and I hope that she can help Selaria get to the others and let them know that Elder Zarconian will be calling them in. Derek and I are the only two that don’t have members of the Rebellion as Personal Trainers, which is why I wasn’t warned by my Personal Trainer.   While the class was packing up and moving to their next class Miss Lucas calls out. “Godric can you stay behind for a few minutes please.”   I walk up to her desk and wait for the students to leave. It is difficult to speak to the others in the Rebellion because we could be watched or overheard at any time.   “Look if you don’t believe me that I was in Elder Zarconian’s office this morning, just ask his men who are outside and will now be following me everywhere.” I say, hinting that we can be overheard and whatever she is going to say to me has to be in code or just written down and given to me with after class work.   “No I believe you, but I have some work here that I’d like you to do before our next class.” She says nodding her understanding and reaching over grabbing some papers that are on her desk.   She writes something on one of the pages and deliberately shows me that she is putting it after the third piece of paper. “Do you understand?” She asks handing them over to me.   “Yes I understand, I’ll get it done before our next class.” I’m not sure what I am meant to get done or if I have to even get anything done.   “You’re free to go Godric.” She says and then walks over to the other side of the desk and sits down.   I walk out of the class and notice that the four men that had been following me are waiting for me to exit the classroom, I guess this means that I’m going to have a very interesting day.   The rest of the morning was interesting as predicted. I had notes passed to me from all of my friends and the other’s that are part of the Rebellion, it was basically the same thing. ‘We know that Elder Zarconian is going to question the other students in your group, do you have a plan if something goes wrong?’ I don’t have a plan, but I can feel that Selaria is coming up with one and something told me that it is going to be a good one.   Selaria has been able to get to the other students without any of the Instructors or students noticing, she has even given a play by play on how it went down in Elder Zarconian’s office when I was in there, which means they know what they are going to say and act when they are brought in.   I notice at lunch that she is sitting with Hannah and her group of friends, there is nothing wrong with Hannah, but I don’t know her, which means I don’t trust her. I notice that Nathaniel and Ian aren’t at lunch either and the four guys that were following me changed shifts with another four, even my friends had noticed and asked me out loud what was going on, they know but they wanted to ask like they didn’t know.   I told them that Elder Zarconian put them on me, and left it at that. What else am I meant to say? But I knew that from the look on their face that I probably wasn’t meant to say that.   I hope that Nathaniel and Ian are doing ok and they aren’t getting too much of a grilling. But I’d find out later today at study group since we don’t have any more classes together.
