Chapter 19 Elder Zarconian

3882 Words
It has been nearly a week since I allowed them to go and pack up everything at Selaria’s house. I know that it has been hard for her and that she wants to do it all on her own, but I wish she would allow the others to help. I am glad that Mawabii has been calling me every day with a progress report, but I’m starting to think that maybe I should give them a time limit.   Before she arrived her aura was a little strong and only had a dull ring around her aura, but now it’s strong and bright and she has two rings around her aura. She says that she’s weak and can only levitate light objects and has a shield. Marcus confirms this, but how can that be when her aura shows differently.   I have gone through all the books that the ancestors have left and haven’t found anything about rings surrounding auras or anything that can be remotely similar. It’s as if this has never happened before. When I went to her father to get him to come back and work with us and saw her for the first time, I knew I had to have her close and to find a way for her to become loyal to me, which is why I had her father killed. I am grateful when Michael told me that he had killed him and was able to capture someone from the Rebellion.   Her aura confuses me, it doesn’t tell me if she is lying or telling the truth, it doesn’t change when she is happy or sad. I have started focusing on the other students as well, to see if somehow I have missed something, but I don’t see any other auras that are similar to hers.   “Father, when will I be able to leave the grounds to go shopping?” My daughter whines, interrupting my thoughts. I forgot she is still here doing her school work.   Looking at her, even now, I can see that her brown aura strong, but not as strong or as bright as Selaria’s.   “Not until I say so.” I tell her getting annoyed that she has asked again. This has been the fifth time today she has asked.   She huffs and goes back to her school work. I can tell by her aura that she isn’t happy with my decision, but until we have the leader of the rebellion captured or dead, I’m not letting her or anyone else go outside the Academy’s grounds.   I wouldn’t have allowed Selaria to go back to her home to pack up her things and put them in storage if I didn’t have any other option. I was constantly told by her instructors, Varsity and even when she came to see me that she isn’t happy, and I can’t afford to lose her. So allowing her to go was the only logical thing to do, and by doing so I know it will make her more grateful and loyal to me.   “But you let Selaria go.” I hear her whine again.   I look up and see her pout, I never like to see her pout, it frustrates me, so I usually just give in, but I can’t this time and it is for her safety and mine that she stays on the Academy’s grounds.   “I let Selaria go because she needs to pack her things up and put them in storage, which will help her grieve the loss of her father.” I say angrily making sure she knows that her questioning is getting under my skin.   She puts her head down and continues working on her school work. I can tell she still isn’t happy, but I’m hoping that it is the last of the questions for now.   I am still wondering about the other students that are in Godric’s and Derek’s circle of friends and wondered if they are part of the Rebellion, but there is no proof and after speaking with the other Elders I’m not able to do anything until I get the proof.   A knock at the door startles me, I’m not expecting anyone and my receptionist didn’t announce that anyone was here.   “Yes.” I say sounding frustrated about being interrupted.   It is my receptionist and there is someone in a cloak behind her. There is only one person that is allowed to interrupt me without notice and that is Stella, she is part of the Rebellion and is my spy in their forces.   “Varsity please go back to your room.” I say turning to her and notice the confused look on her face.   She isn’t happy that I am telling her to leave, but I can’t have her here while Stella is here and we can’t discuss anything while she is here either, for her own protection.   She finishes packing up her things and storms to the door, when she gets to the door she turns and says. “I’m telling mum about this.” And with that she storms out.   Her mother is the last person I want to talk to about what is going on, and she always took Varsity’s side without listening to mine, I sometimes wondered if I should have married her. But right now I have more important things to worry about.   “What do you have?” I ask frustrated at how my day is going and hope Stella has some good news.   “I don’t know where they have gone, and I’ve looked everywhere and so has my family.” She says sitting down sounding worried, which she should be because if I don’t find them it could mean a lot more trouble.   “What do you mean you don’t know where they have gone?” I ask trying to sound patient.   “I went to the warehouse that Charlie sent us all to and no-one was there.” She says.   She starts bouncing her right foot, which I have come to know that it is a sign that she is really worried.   I don’t really know why Stella agreed to help us, but I am glad, it meant that we were able to find a lot of them and it took us close to a year to finally be able to catch them without them committing suicide. Which is why I haven’t killed either Ezera or Tarlia, but I haven’t been able to get any information out of either them.   “So why are you here?” I ask confused.   “I know that there are a few students here that are part of the Rebellion.” She says trying to sound positive.   “Great, well give me their names and I’ll bring them in.” I say grabbing a piece of paper and pen.   “I don’t know all of their names, but I believe the new girl, umm, Selaria is part of them.” She says.   “Really?” I ask not too happy with what she has just said. I am glad that my receptionist is standing behind her because I can see that she was shaking her head.   “Yes, I’m positive that her and Godric are dating.” She says nodding like she is one of those bobble head dogs.   “I doubt Selaria is with them.” I say.   I know that Selaria hasn’t been here that long but I do know that she has had no contact with Godric or his family and neither has her father, she hasn’t ever been seen with the group that he hung out with.   “Why do you doubt it?” She asks in a challenging tone.   I’m not happy with the tone of voice that she is using and no-one other than my wife has ever used that tone with me and it is only when no-one else is around.   I stand up and glower down at her. “I know because I have known that family from before Tobius came to the Academy and I know that they have had nothing to do with that family ever.” I say angrily, mad that she is questioning me.   “I’m sorry but I’m sure that I saw her there the night you had your men storm the place.” She says quieter now.   “If she was or had been there my men would have told me, they have the names of all the people that were there and none of those names were Selaria.” I say still furious that she is still questioning me. “If you have nothing else, get out of my office.” I nearly yell. She stands up and runs out of my office.   My receptionist raised an eyebrow and asks. “Do you want me to get Mawabii on the line?”   I know that she isn’t questioning me but we do need to make them hurry up and get back here.   “Yes, please do.” I say a little calmer, it isn’t her fault that I am angry and I don’t want her to feel that she has done anything wrong.   She nods and walks out of my office and closes the door. I stand up and walk away from my desk and stand where Varsity had previously been sitting. For the past few years all I had to really deal with was Varsity and her need to have everything and a few attacks from the Rebellion, but now the Rebellion seems to be upping their game and seems to be attacking more often.   A couple of minutes went by and I hear the door open. “Mawabii is on the phone.” My receptionist says holding the phone out to me.   “Thank you.” I say and take the phone from her.   She nods and walks out of the room shutting the door behind her. I wait a few extra minutes just to be sure that she has left.   “Mawabii, how is everything going there?” I ask not wanting to sound pushy.   “Fine, I think we will be back tomorrow some time, we have everything packed and in storage, but Selaria wants to stay here for the night.” Mawabii says sounding bored.   I know that this has been a bit for him, he has never had to do any security or as Twisha says babysitting. “Thank you and make sure that she is happy with everything.” I tell him, knowing he has been keeping me in the loop about everything, even Marcus training her every morning.   “She seems to be doing a great deal better this afternoon.” He says sounding hesitant.   “I’m glad, and how is her training coming with Marcus?” I ask curious as to how she is coming along.   “She is doing amazing, she is a lot stronger now.” He says and before I can say anything he continues. “I think her coming here to pack everything up and sort of being able to say goodbye to her father has really helped her.”   “I’m very glad.” I tell him, feeling very happy about this. “Has she done anything different or is she still levitating objects?” I ask curious.   “She was able to revive a flower, but she had to rest after doing so.” He says not sounding too happy about it. “I think she was pushed too hard and it was Twisha that did the pushing.”   As happy as I am about this new development, I’m not happy that Twisha has pushed her too far. “How is she now?” I ask concerned.   “She slept for five hours after the incident, but she seems to be doing a little better, Marcus wants to give her a slight break when we get back tomorrow.” He says.   “That’s a great idea, I think a couple days break from training and classes would be best, and please tell everyone, especially Twisha.” I order, upset that she slept for five hours straight because of what she did, but at least she is ok now.   “I will.” He says sounding hesitant, I am about to ask him about it when he continues. “Dinner is here, I had better go, and I will pass on the message.”   “Thank you and tell Selaria that I hope she is feeling a lot better and apologise for what Twisha did for me.” I say and hung up before he can say anything else.   I am surprised by what I found out, how could Twisha do that, what made her do that? I know I am going to have to speak to her when they get back tomorrow, but for now I know that I have other things to deal with, and if on cue my wife bursts into my office.   “Why can’t Varsity go out shopping?” She asks glaring at me.   I know she is mad and that if I don’t do as she asks we are going to be arguing for months like the last time, but this time I am doing this for Varsity’s safety and I have to tell her that. “What do you want me to do, let her go out while the Rebellion is attacking?” I ask giving her a questioning look.   I never wanted to marry or have children, but to be an Elder I had to at least marry. I was told it was to set an example for everyone else. After a year of being married I found out that my wife was pregnant, which seemed to look favourably with the previous Leader of the Elders.   I didn’t want it, but I had to look like I was pleased that my wife was pregnant and that we were going to have a baby. But this is why I never wanted children, they are whiny little cry baby’s that run to their mother when they don’t like something that has happened or when something is too hard.   “What do you mean?” She asks shocked.   I guess Varsity didn’t tell her everything as usual. Which is another reason we argue, because she is only given half of the story and sometimes not even that.   “The Rebellion has been attacking and we have spies in the Academy and I can’t seem to find them.” I say and sit down in one of the oversized chairs in front of the fire.   “How come?” She asks walking toward the chairs sounding confused.   When she sits in the chair I yell. “Because of Varsity, I’m worried what will happen if she leaves the Academy and gets taken!”   She is taken back, I’m not sure why, this isn’t the first time that we have argued or I have yelled.   “I didn’t realise.” She says looking into the fire as if it held all the answers to our problems. “You never really showed that you cared about her, I thought it was all show, so you could become the Leader of the Elders.”   For a moment even I am shocked, did I really care about her, I mean she is my daughter, but she has always been a means to an end. But maybe Mildred is right, I did care about her. “Look if the Rebellion gets her, they will use her as leverage, do you want that?” I ask, trying to change the subject.   “No I don’t want that.” She says sounding disappointed.   I’m not sure what she wanted, I’m not the only one who married to get more power, I know she did as well. Mildred isn’t a bad wife, I mainly married her for her looks and she isn’t stupid. Even looking at her now, with her black long hair done in a loose braid and wearing a one sleeve black skin tight short dress and knee high black boots, she looks beautiful.   “I just think that maybe you can send her out with a heap of Protectors like you did with this Selaria girl, so she can do a couple of hours shopping.” She says giving me the puppy dog look.   I can’t back down, but I’m not sure how to tell her that it isn’t going to happen. That allowing Varsity to go out would mean allowing others to go out as well, which isn’t a good idea.   “If I do that, then the other students will want to go out as well and I will never be able to figure out who is part of the Rebellion.” I say hitting my fist on the arm of the chair in frustration.   “But the other students aren’t your daughter and she has a reputation to keep.” She says sounding just as angry.   “That’s right she is my daughter and the Rebellion know that and even if I did put her with a heap of Protectors I doubt I have enough to keep her safe.” I say trying to reign in my anger.   “But you allowed Selaria go, so what is the difference?” She asks.   I knew this was coming, but I wished that I was wrong. “Selaria is a new student, and the reason she is here is because I asked her father to come back to work for us and he was killed not even a day on the job.” I say staring at her hoping she understands where I am coming from.   “What?” She asks sounding sad. “That’s dreadful, but Varsity said she has been here for about a week before she was allowed out and she isn’t as strong as Varsity.”   I am getting sick of trying to explain myself. “Yes that’s true and the Rebellion was the reason I wouldn’t allow her to go home earlier, and she was doing better with her training until one of the Protectors wanted her to do something she wasn’t ready for and she was so weak she slept for five hours afterward, which is why they won’t be back until tomorrow.” I say hoping she gets it this time, or at least gives it a break.   She doesn’t say anything and just stares into the fire, I know she is thinking, but I’m not sure what she is thinking about, our daughter or Selaria. We sit in silence for a few minutes, which is great and another reason I am glad she is my wife, she doesn’t always need to talk, just sitting not saying a word is enough.   It is then that I realise that I may have found a solution to both of our problems, I could organise a shopping spree for Varsity, but here in the Academy instead of in the shopping malls, I’m not sure how I am going to pull it off.   “Isn’t there anything that you could do so she can have a few minutes of shopping?” She asks breaking my train of thought.   I’m not sure if I should tell her or not, but I know if I do I might be able to pull it off, since she knows the clothes and other items that Varsity likes to buy. I sit there contemplating it for a few more minutes, just thinking that maybe this might be a win win situation for all of us.   I look into the fire for a few minutes longer and then say. “Maybe, but I’m not sure if I can pull it off.”   “What is it, I’m sure I can help and I might be able to get some of the other women to help as well.” She says sounding eager and turning to look at me.   “Maybe we can set up a shopping mall here in the Academy.” I say wondering if she will be able to figure out how to do it.   “That is a brilliant idea, and I know exactly how to do it.” She says sounding excited.   She practically jumps up from the chair and starts typing on the phone I brought her a few weeks ago. She is so excited that she kisses me and then rushes off.   She shocks me with the kiss, we rarely touch each other and when we do it is either because we are in public or I want to. I’m not sure what to make of this sudden change and I’m not sure if I like it either. But I’m not going to say anything in case it backfires.   But there is one thing I know I am going to have to keep an eye on, and that is Selaria. I know she will become powerful, because I can see it in her aura, but the question that remains is when will she come into that power?   I hear Mildred leave and I realise that I have to figure out not only where I can put a makeshift mall, but also find a place where Selaria can go for the holidays. I might have to get my assistant to have a look around at some places and hopefully we can find something that she will like.   I get up and walk over to my desk, hoping that my assistant is in his office otherwise I’m going to have to get my receptionist to find him and I want a place before Selaria gets back tomorrow. I get to my desk and pick up the phone and call him.   “Dilan here.” I hear Dilan say.   “I need to find a place for Selaria to move into and hopefully call home.” I say and before he can say anything I add. “And I need this done before tomorrow.”   “There are two empty apartments here in the Academy, one is small and has the bare essentials but the other is a little smaller than yours, and has two rooms.” Dilan says quickly.   “Really? I didn’t realise we still had apartments in the Academy, I thought they were all taken up.” I say both surprised and pleased.   “There are only two left, mainly because they are on the opposite side of the Academy and no-one wanted them because they weren’t close to you and the other Elders.” Dilan says and I can hear papers shuffling, which I am hoping means that he is looking them up.   “I want the bigger one for Selaria and I want to see what is in there, also I want her stuff moved in there before she gets here tomorrow.” Hoping that the apartment will be big enough, I wanted her to feel like it is her home and not just a room. “Of course, I’ll bring over the photos and what is in there, and if you want I can even take you to see it.” Dilan says hanging up.   I didn’t think I would have gotten such a good loyal assistant, but Dilan is amazing, he not only does what I want, but he goes above and beyond which is rare in an assistant.   My door opens and Dilan walks into my office through a door that links his office to mine. When he started working for me I had him knock before he entered but after a few years he knew when to walk in and when to wait, he is really smart.   He places some papers in front of me, and I can see that they are the blueprints of the apartment and photos as well as a list of what is in there. Judging by the look of the apartment I can tell that it is a little smaller than mine, but not by much.   “Did you want to have a look through?” Dilan asks walking to the other side of my desk.   “Yes I do, I’m liking the look of the blueprints, but I want to make sure that no changes need to be made.” I say going over the blueprints.   There is two bedrooms, one larger than the other, one big bathroom with a separate bath and shower, a separate toilet, a study, a small library, a lounge room, a sparing room and a kitchen and dining room combined. I’m just hoping that the paint colour doesn’t need to be changed and I don’t need to bring in too much furniture and no repairs need to be made.   “Ok, let’s go.” I say, I want to see it as quickly as I can.
