At first I didn’t realise what was happening, it was like I was having a dream within a dream, and then I see him, sitting there on the sand looking out at the ocean. I have never seen or been to this place before. I take a closer look and realise that it is a deserted beach and there is a hut behind me.
“Where are we?” I ask walking up to him, I know that this is a dream, but it is the second time I have dreamt of a place I had never been.
“We are somewhere safe.” He says looking up at me and pats the spot beside him inviting me to sit down next to him.
“Safe, ok, so is this your dream or mine?” I ask wondering why I was asking such a stupid question.
I am about to kick my shoes off, when I notice that I’m still wearing my pyjamas, which is embarrassing because they are blue with white fluffy clouds.
“And if this is your dream, how do you know what I wore to bed?” I ask pulling my top down a little and realise that it’s a losing battle and give up.
“It’s not really a dream, somehow we are able to communicate with each other while we are sleeping.” He says looking back out at the ocean before us.
“Oh ok. How is that possible?” I ask leaning toward him, and wonder if it’s even possible.
“I’m not sure, but it must be because of the way we feel about each other.” He says placing his arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer.
“As if we are meant to be together, and being drawn to each other.” I say looking out at the ocean as well, hoping that was what he meant.
“I believe so.” He says. “You can’t tell anyone that we know each other.”
We sit there for a while, not saying anything just sitting there, him holding me and watching the ocean. I don’t know how long we were sitting there for, but I didn’t care. All I cared about was that he is here and I am here with him.
But then the dream starts slipping, he pulls my face towards him and gives me a quick kiss. “Keep safe, and don’t do anything that will draw too much attention to you. I love you.” And then he disappears.
The moment I wake up I miss him. I just want to lay there for who knows how long, but then my alarm goes off notifying me that it is six thirty, which means I only have half an hour to get to the dining room.
I race to the closet to see what I can wear to my first day and find the school uniform, a white shirt with an emblem of a Triquetra inside a sun and a pleated blue and green tartan skirt that went to just above my knees. I didn’t even realise that the Academy had an emblem. I walk over and take a look at the letter and timetable that was left on my desk, and see that in the right hand corner is the same emblem.
I walk into the bathroom and have a quick shower, but I wish I could have stayed in there a little longer. I walk out of the bathroom and notice that I have a little over fifteen minutes to get to the dining room, which means that I have to quickly put my shoes on and have to possibly run to the dining room before anyone notices that I’m not in there, and questions get asked about my whereabouts.
A knock on my door makes me hurry even more, because I think it might be an Instructor. I walk over to the door when the knocking gets more demanding, with only one shoe on and the other in my hand, I open the door and found a young girl standing there in her uniform. I sigh with relief, thinking this might be Elder Zarconian’s daughter.
“Hey I’m almost dressed, I’ll be ready in a sec.” I say walking back over to the desk and sit down so I can finish putting my shoes on.
The girl is still standing in the doorway, and I’m not sure why until she says. “Wow, you have a room to yourself.” And finally walks in and walks over to my bed and sits down. “And a really big bed, so why are you treated the same as Varsity?” She asks.
“What do you mean?” I ask back, guessing that she may not be Elder Zarconian’s daughter and wasn’t sure what she meant, and since she hadn’t introduced herself I wasn’t sure what I was meant to say and I didn’t even know who Varsity was. “Don’t you have a room to yourself?” I ask, knowing that Elder Zarconian’s daughter would have a room to herself.
“No, I’m sharing with two other girls.” She says getting up when I have finished tying up my shoes. “And all our beds are single beds, not a queen like yours.”
I stand up confused as why I am being treated differently to the others and who this girl is. I thought for a moment and wondered if it’s because my mother is normal and with no magical abilities so they don’t want me with any of the other girls?
“Maybe it’s because my mother is human, normal, no magical abilities at all.” I say walking to my door, “What do you mean like Varsity?” I ask remembering she mentioned Varsity having her own room.
“Varsity has her own room, but that’s only because Elder Zarconian is her father. So I guess that’s why she gets the special treatment, but not why you do.” She says curiously and walks out of my room and standing beside my door waiting for me to lock my door.
So she’s not Varsity, then who is she? “Varsity is Elder Zarconian’s daughter?” I ask, and feel glad that this girl isn’t her and hoping maybe we can be friends.
“Yep, she is. You could be right though, the reason you are by yourself is because you’re the only one here that doesn’t have both parents that have magical abilities.” She says walking with me down the hall. “But I wouldn’t worry, your father is one of the most powerful Trackers known, you will do fine. Oh and I’m Hannah, I thought I’d take you to the cafeteria since it’s your first day and you have no friends.” She continues sounding very cheerful, as if we were having a completely normal conversation and we have known each other for years.
“Oh thanks, and it’s nice to meet you, I’m Selaria.” I say introducing myself feeling more confident and following her down the hall.
We finally get to the dining room and find that it’s really full. I can see some guys that are talking to Godric sitting at a table by themselves. They all look up at me like they expect me to do something, but what, I’m not sure. I walk with Hannah over to the buffet.
“Wow, what a spread.” I say before I can stop myself.
But it was, there was everything you could think of there. There are different types of fruit that are in season and that aren’t, there is cereal, scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, ice-cream, toppings, toast and jams and there is other stuff that I don’t recognise.
“Yeah, they like to make sure that we all eat to our fullest.” Hannah says as if it is completely normal for me to say what I did. “Hey do you know those guys over there, because they haven’t stopped staring at you since we walked into the room and I know it’s not because of me?” She asks, giving me a side glance and tilting her head toward the guys and girls with Godric and she was right, they are all staring at me.
“Nope, I don’t know them.” I say to her and did my best to ignore them. “How do you know they aren’t staring at you, trying to figure out how a goddess could be at the same Academy as them, and their probably wondering if they could get your number.” I continue, which makes us both laugh.
“Well I’ve been here for three years and they have never stared at me. But if they are staring at me they are in for a rude awakening, because I’m no goddess.” She says and walks to a table on the other side of the room.
“Don’t we need to pay for this?” I whisper to her when I catch up to her.
Looking back I realize that there isn’t a cash register or someone to take money for the food that we had grabbed from the buffet or the drinks that we got from the drink machine that had everything, juice, soft drinks and hot and cold drinks.
“No, we don’t pay for anything at the Academy.” She says giving me a strange look and sitting at a table with a group of girls I am hoping she will introduce to me. “Here we are given everything we need to assist us to becoming what we want to be.” She finishes and starts eating what is on her tray.
I glance over at Godric’s group and find that they are still watching me, but they are also eating as well. Godric doesn’t even look away when I look at him and catch him staring at me, as if it’s completely normal for him to watch me, and after a couple of minutes he starts talking to the guy beside him.
“Hi I’m Naomi, I’m Hannah’s cousin.” The girl on the other side of Hannah says grabbing my attention.
“Hi I’m Selaria.” I say glad to feel welcome to the group and glad that they are nice.
“So it’s true, we were told yesterday that there would be a new girl coming to the Academy.” The girl opposite me says, in a friendly but questioning tone.
“Don’t mind Maya, she can be a bit forthcoming sometimes.” Naomi says giving Maya a bit of a shove and then continues. “Now we understand why the guys over there keep staring at our table and were staring at you when you walked in, it’s because you’re new.”
I wasn’t sure what to say to that, I look over and wonder what I should do and if I should wave to Godric. As if reading my mind he did a slight shake of his head and then went back to the others at his table.
“Yeah, I just hope it doesn’t last too long, I don’t like the attention.” I say picking at the food on my tray.
“Oh it’s gunna last awhile, but look at it this way, at least you’re not on your own.” The girl sitting on the other side of me says and then takes a bite out of a piece of toast that she had on her plate.
“Airanna’s right, you’re lucky that Hannah saved you from coming here on your own, it could have been a lot different.” Maya says smiling at me.
I was glad that Hannah brought me here, coming alone would have been very awkward. Looking around the dining room I see that Godric’s table isn’t the only table that was staring at me, but unlike Godric’s table the table two tables away sat a girl glaring at me like I had done something wrong, and it seems I’m not the only one at our table to have noticed.
“That’s Varsity, she’s Elder Zarconian’s daughter and she can be a b***h at times.” The girl sitting between Airanna and Maya says. She had been quiet since I arrived and has nearly finished everything on her tray, unlike the others. “Oh and by the way I’m Aubree, I’m Maya’s cousin.” She continues
“Don’t worry about Varsity she looks at everyone like that if they don’t worship the ground she stands on.” Hannah says before I can say anything.
I look over at Varsity and start to see the similarities between her and Elder Zarconian. I guess that the reason there are a lot of students at her table is because of the status that she holds since she is the Head Elder’s daughter. I had questioned my father about why the Head Elder was in charge of the Academy and all he told me was ‘that it has always been that way’. But it still didn’t make sense to me.
The Academy is just like any other school, there are cliques and the only difference with this place was that everyone has powers and they are taught how to control them and how to use them. I don’t know where I stand, all I know is that I have to keep my powers a secret and weak.
I am glad that Hannah knocked on my door, but I am also a little confused to why and how she knew that it was my room. I wanted to ask her, but I am a little worried that it might ruin what could be a pretty good friendship, but my dad did state that I shouldn’t trust anyone here except for Godric and I know I shouldn’t, but Hannah and her friends seem ok.
Varsity got up from her table and walks over to ours, I’m not sure why, but I wasn’t liking it. She wore the uniform, but it was extremely short and I couldn’t believe she was getting away with it, but she is Elder Zarconian’s daughter, so that is probably one of the reasons why. I look at the other girls at the table and see that they have also noticed that Varsity has gotten up and was walking over to us.
It was Hannah that spoke first when Varsity got to our table. “Can we help you Varsity?” She says in a voice between sarcasm and anger
She glares down at Hannah. “I am meant to show the new girl around the Academy, not you.” She says in a snobby voice, like she always got her own way and that Hannah was interrupting her and doing something she wasn’t worthy of doing.
“Well maybe you should have gone to her room and picked her up this morning before Hannah got there.” Maya chimes in with an extremely snarky tone of voice, not even hiding her smirk.
From here I could smell Varsity’s scent and knew that it isn’t good, like her father I smelt acid, but there is something else underlying it, but I can’t figure out what it is, I haven’t smelt it before. I don’t want to cause a scene on my first day and was about to try and stop them from making one when Airanna cut into my thoughts.
“Varsity just go back to your group, we are doing you a favour by showing her around, because it means that you can have the girls do your hair, nails and who knows what else.” Airanna says shaking her head. I am shocked at how catty they are all getting, but it was enjoyable to watch.
“Fine.” She says with a huff and sashayed back over to her table. I notice that nearly all of the guys were watching her leave and some nearly fell out of their chairs laughing.
There was only one table that wasn’t watching her, they were watching me and that is Godric’s table. Again I’m not the only one that noticed either, looking back at the group I see that the others also notice and are looking from Godric’s table to me and back again, as if it was a tennis match.
“So do you know any of them?” Airanna asks, looking at me and then back at Godric’s table.
“She only just got to the Academy and she was at a normal school for most of her life and nowhere near those guys.” Maya cut in before I could say anything. I am glad though trying to explain that I didn’t know him was going to be difficult.
I just finished breakfast when the bell rang, Hannah was nice enough to take me to the gym where my Personal Trainer was waiting. She told me that it would change when I got there and it was just a meeting place until I got more familiar with the Academy grounds.
After meeting Marcus in the gym, he took me outside to one of the court yards. He looked like he was in his mid-thirties, but his hair was brown with grey streaks. I found that I didn’t need to introduce myself which was good and I noticed that I was the only student there.
“We only have one student, so that student can get all the attention that is needed.” He tells me when I ask about it. “So how about you tell me what you can do.” He says and stands there waiting for me to answer.
I had to think about it for a while, because I couldn’t tell him the truth. “Umm, I can move paper, but it takes a lot of energy to do it.” I say quietly, close to a whisper and hope he doesn’t catch my lie.
“That’s it?” He asks raising an eyebrow questioning me.
“Yep, I didn’t even know that I had powers, until I was playing with my homework book, I thought it was the wind, but when I showed my dad there was no wind.” I say to him, trying to smile, but still a little embarrassed.
He shook his head. “Ok, well how about you try and lift a leaf for me, there is no wind.” He says rolling his eyes and sighing.
So that’s what I did, I made it take me about five minutes to move the leaf, but I got it off the ground to mid ankle height, he didn’t seem happy about it, but he didn’t say anything. I made myself drop it as if it was too heavy.
“Keep practicing, you’ll get stronger.” He says trying to sound encouraging and writing something on a piece of paper that he had on a clipboard.
He gave me a bunch of exercises, which I could do in my sleep, when the bell rang for my next class, and he was kind enough to take me to it.
Stealth Training was on one of the massive ovals, and when I got there I see to my disappointment that Varsity is there, but I am glad when I see that Hannah and Godric are also in my class. But Godric seemed to make sure that we are far away from each other.
Before I can question what is going on I hear the instructor call my name. I walk up to her hoping and praying to whatever higher power there is that she wasn’t going to make me tell the class my life story, like I had seen many times before at my old school with the new kids, I knew that they hated doing it and were always embarrassed.
“Everyone this is Selaria, now she is new, and she only came into her powers about a month ago, so it would be extremely appreciative if everyone could please help her and not hinder her process in becoming stronger.” She smiles at me, it seems genuine, but I am extremely embarrassed and when I look over at Godric I realize that he is shocked and confused at what he has just heard. “Now who would like to be Selaria’s partner?” She asks still smiling.
I am glad when Hannah speaks up. “I will be.” I notice that she is jumping up and down on the spot waving her hand as if the instructor didn’t hear her.
The instructor nods and gives me a little shove in Hannah’s direction. Before I get there I can hear the other students laughing and snickering at me and some are even pointing, but it was Varsity that I hear over everyone and I guess that she was meaning for everyone to hear it.
“Her mother is normal and has no powers, that’s why she only just came into them and I hear she is really weak.” She says sounding so proud of herself.
I walk faster over to Hannah who is still jumping up and down on the spot, as if she didn’t hear a word that Varsity had said and is excited to have me as a partner. As soon as I reach her she pulls me into a giant hug like I am her long lost friend.
“Don’t listen to her, she’s just jealous that you’re getting all the attention and she’s not.” Hannah says giggling
Hannah was easy to get along with, she wanted to be an instructor, but now that she is here she is going to become a watcher, because she doesn’t want to be out there fighting all the bad that is out there.
People are scared of vampires and werewolves, but they haven’t met the Dark-Users they are worse. They don’t drain blood like vampires, and they don’t bite like werewolves and make others werewolves, no, dark-uses drain the spirit of the person they are attached to and are able to change their form to whoever they take the spirit from, and then they kill the rest of the family by taking their spirit as well. The problem is that they haven’t been able to take spirit’s from the children yet, but I’m sure they will find a way soon enough.
“Everyone before the bell rings for lunch I want to give you an assignment for both you and your partner.” There were collective groans from everyone except for Hannah and myself. “Yes, yes I know, it’s tragic but it’s also really simple, I want you to pick two creatures and give me three scenarios on how best to defeat them.”
There was a cough that brought everyone’s attention to Dilan who is standing just off to the side, I hear one of the other students state that he is Elder Zarconian’s assistant, and he walks up to the instructor and whispers something in her ear.
I know it isn’t good, by the way they are whispering. I was getting a few different feelings from both of them, she was getting upset and worried, and Dillan was anxious. I hoped they couldn’t tell that I am reading their feelings, but I was worried and hoped they couldn’t tell.
The instructor looks over at me with sad eyes and calls me over. “Selaria, you have to go with Dilan.” She says trying not to give anything away, but I know that there is something really wrong.
I don’t know what they had been talking about, but whatever it was, I can tell that it isn’t good, so I glance at Hannah who gives me a smile and a little shove in Dilan’s direction.
After following Dilan for about twenty minutes in silence, I ask him what was going on, but he wouldn’t talk he just kept walking.
We finally arrive at Elder Zarconian’s office. Dilan tells me to wait where I am and heads in. I push out a mind probe to get a feel of any emotions inside the room, and realise that it’s just Elder Zarconian in there.
Dilan opens the door, “You can go in.” He says. I’m worried that maybe Marcus had figured out that I am stronger than my father and I made out that I was.
I walk past Dilan and walk through the door and find Elder Zarconian is sitting at his desk. I walk over to his desk, but I don’t sit down, I just stand and wait until I’m given permission to sit, but I feel really uncomfortable about it because I can sense that what he is going to tell me isn’t anything good, judging by his expression.
“Miss Minx, please take a seat.” Elder Zarconian says, with a grim expression and waves at the chairs in front of him.
I sit down and I start to wonder what it’s about. But I don’t know why Elder Zarconian seems worried, they couldn’t know that my powers were strong could they and I never thought that he could worry or even that it was possible.
“Miss Minx, I regretfully say that late last night your father was in an explosion. We are still looking to find out how this could have happened, but when the backup arrived, all the men that were with your father are dead and the explosion seems to have destroyed your father.” Elder Zarconian says sympathetically.
“What? No that can’t be possible, my father can’t be dead.” I say and start to feel the beginning of a panic attack and start to wonder if they did something, or if they heard about our conversation near the car and they killed him. But it is weird, I would have felt it if something had happened to him.
“I’m sorry dear, but we do have a lead on who killed him.” Elder Zarconian says placing his hands on the desk in front of him.
“Who, who killed him?” I ask with tears in my eyes, he was all I had left and now I had no-one, he told me this was going to happen so I can make them pay, I can feel my heart beating and it felt like it was going to beat out of my chest.
“A man named Ezera, the Trackers were tracking him and a couple of other people that are in the Rebellion.” He says bringing his hands up and placing his fingertips on his lips, while resting his elbows on the desk. “We are so very sorry, and if there is anything we can do, please do not hesitate to ask.”
“Thank you, but if you don’t mind I’d like to go to my room.” I say, starting to stand up and after a shaky start, I’m able to finally stand.
“Of course, you may go.” Elder Zarconian says waving his hand signalling that I can go.
I walk to the door on shaky legs and hope that I make it to my room before I collapse and really start crying.
As I open the door Elder Zarconian says. “I will also give you two weeks off from your studies to mourn the loss of your father, and if you wish your meals will be brought to you.”
“Thank you, that will be much appreciated. But do I have to stay in my room, can I go out and walk around in the garden, gardens always seem to sooth me.” I ask looking back. It is true they always did.
“Of course whatever you need.” He says standing up with a smile on his face.
I try and smile back and walk out the door heading toward my room. I know it can’t be true, that my father isn’t dead, Elder Zarconian was a little too calm for my liking, but why would he lie to me.
I try the number my father gave to me, with the mobile phone that he gave me on the way back to my room and it went straight to voice mail, as if he had it turned off, which I know he never did.
Before I get to my room I run into Varsity, who tries to look upset but fails terribly. “Oh I heard about your dad, I’m really sorry.” She says as if trying to comfort me.
Wow it got around very fast, or maybe her father told her.
“I’m sorry about what I said on the oval, I hope they find out who did this.” She says, then spins around and heads back to where ever she came from.
I’m glad she left, I hate it when people look too smug, I have made one friend maybe five, while I’ve been here, but I’m not sure if I can count on Hannah and the others. But then I remember that Elder Zarconian knew who did this but Varsity didn’t know, I’m guessing he didn’t tell her everything.
I decided to run the rest of the way to my room. When I got to my room I notice a note sitting on my bed, I walk over and start to read it when I feel the familiarity of Godric behind me, I turn around and am slammed into his chest.
He pulls me close and I start crying, and I can’t seem to stop. I cry because my dad is dead, the only one I had left in my family, I cry because I’m here in a place that I don’t like all alone and I cry because I know Godric isn’t meant to be here but I’m glad he is.
He carries me over to my bed where I lay against him and keep crying. I know guys hate it when a girl cries, but Godric didn’t seem to mind, all he did was hold me and didn’t let go until I pushed back.
“What are you doing here?” I ask, sitting up and blowing my nose on a tissue that he produced from who knows where.
“Coming to make sure you are ok, and to ask who killed your dad.” He looks down at my hands which I notice he is holding gently.
“No I mean what are you doing here, I’ll get into trouble for having a boy who has been ignoring me all morning in my room.” I pull my hands away and get off the bed.
“I came because I knew you needed me, you called me, I heard you, which is why I came.” He answers, getting off the bed from the other side and walks around to me.
I remember then that while I was running I was thinking about Godric and how much I’d like to have him near me, so I’m the one who’s putting him in danger now, great.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I didn’t even know I was doing it.” I sob and walk into his arms and he holds me tighter.
“I know, but I still knew that you needed me. Also I felt your strength, your stronger then what Ms Soton said at the beginning of class.” He held me for a few more minutes. “I have to go, the guys are making excuses for my absence from lunch, but I had better get there before any of them get into trouble.” He says giving a quick kiss and then disappears.
I know I can’t leave, but I am wishing I could right now. Now that my father is dead, I know that I’m in even bigger danger than I was before, but who can I trust? I know that Varsity and her father are out of the question, but is Hannah and her friends? This was going to be harder now.
I go over to my bed and lay down pulling my sketch book out of my bag and start drawing; I didn’t have anything in mind, but drawing always helped me calm down and helped me focus.
When I finish drawing I look down at the page and I find that I drew a picture of what looks like five men standing near a car that I knew and looking at someone that was away from the car, who I could only guess was the guy that Elder Zarconian was talking about, Ezera, the guy that made everything explode.
I close my eyes and try to go to sleep and hope that this was just a dream. After a while I realise I couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard I tried.
“Is there a problem?” I hear Godric ask.
But I couldn’t see him, it was as if he was in my head, it was weird and a bit unnerving. It isn’t like our dreams either, but maybe that’s the point, we are both awake, but somehow we can still hear and feel each other, but we can’t see each other.
“I drew something, but I wasn’t there.” I say in my head hoping he can hear it, and I put the image of the picture in my mind and wonder if he can actually see it.
I hear nothing and then, “What is that.” He showed me the angle that he saw it in, and I found that it wasn’t the same angle.
“How am I seeing it from this angle then?” I ask, worried that I might be getting another power, a power that I may not be able to control.
“I’m not sure, but don’t worry love, we will handle this together.” He says, sounding a little weary. “I have to go, I wish I didn’t but I do. We can talk more tonight. I love you.”
And with that he was gone, I could still feel him but it isn’t the same. Somehow I am able to talk to him, and feel him in my mind; I don’t know how I did it or how we did it, but I am glad that I can. I feel less alone with him there, even if he is only a glimmer in my mind, at least I know he can tell if I am in danger or if I am upset.
