Ian had passed a message to Lucy for me to meet him in my room, he had his book in his hand and he looked pale. “You have a message from your uncle, I haven’t shown anyone or told anyone about it.”
I take the book and flip it open, Ian had kept his finger there as a book mark until I took it from him. I look down at the book and barely saw the words, it didn’t make sense, I look up at Ian, who nods and then glances back down at the book.
Ezera has been captured and there is a possibility that we could have a traitor in our midst. How could they have taken Ezera and who on Earth could be the traitor? We were all checked when we are made leaders, so it can’t be one of us. We swore to this alliance so we can’t go against it, none of us can.
I know that Derek has to be told and that he has to get out of the Academy, but I have to speak to my uncle. I need to know what exactly is going on, but first I have to get to Derek before the Elders get to him.
“Where is Derek?” I ask Ian urgently.
“He’s in the dining room having lunch with the others.” He says moving so he isn’t directly in front of the door, in case I am going to run out the door to get to Derek.
I hand the book back. “Don’t leave this room until I get back and don’t show anyone the book.” And then I rush out of the room.
I know that I have to get to Derek before anyone else does, but I can’t do it and bring attention to myself while I am doing it, but I know that I have to hurry.
By the time I get to the dining room, lunch is almost over and everyone was starting to get up and leave. I look over to our table and see everyone sitting there and am relieved to see that Derek is still there as well.
Before I get to the table they must have noticed that there was something wrong and they all get up and come over to me.
“What’s wrong?” Derek asks, getting to me first and the only one that is probably willing to speak in an unsecure area.
I don’t know how I was going to tell him or how I am going to get him to our room without bringing any attention. But I knew I have to do it fast before the Elders send someone to come and get him.
“You need to come with me, girls you stay here and keep an eye on everything, anything seems odd, let Ian know, guys you with me, surround Derek and whatever you do, don’t draw attention.” I say and turn and walk out of the dining room.
“What the hell is going on Godric?” Derek asks in an urgent whisper, looking around worried and shrinking down so the guys can cover him.
I can tell that everyone wants to know, but I want to wait until we are in my room before I say anything. “I’ll tell you when we are in our room.” I say hoping I won’t get any more questions.
Ian is still there when we arrive and he is pacing and looking worried, I am glad that we didn’t have any trouble while we were walking back to my room. I ushered everyone into my room and made sure that the door isn’t just locked but also sealed so no-one from the other side can get in or hear what we are talking about.
“Godric, what is going on?” Derek asks again more urgent after I had sealed the door so no-one could hear what was going on in the room.
I can tell that I had everyone on edge at this point. “Derek your father has been captured and I fear that you might be next.” I say directly to Derek.
Before I finish saying it he falls into his chair. I’ve never known anything to shock Derek until today, but this was big, his father was one of the most important men in the Rebellion and now the Elders have him.
It took him awhile, but after a few minutes he asks. “Are you sure?”
I would have asked the same thing, but there was no denying my uncle’s signature. “Yes it is, I’m sorry. And that’s not even all of it, there is a traitor in the Rebellion.” I tell them.
At this everyone seems to need to sit down. I couldn’t blame them, I’d want to sit down too, but I have to protect Derek and the others here at the Academy. I know that Ezera wouldn’t say anything that would put his son or anyone else in the Rebellion in any danger, but the Elders might know that Derek was Ezera’s son.
“How? And who is the traitor?” Derek asks shocked, worried and with a bit of anger in his voice, which is understandable.
“I found out from Uncle Charlie, he sent the message to Ian’s book and we don’t know who the traitor is.” I tell them, I know telling them could be a bad move on my part, but they all need to know that.
“What do we do now?” John asks sitting on the end of my bed.
I am about to answer when we see that my uncle was trying to contact us using the crystal. Since I am unable to get to it myself, John passes it over to me.
“This is Godric.” I say answering it.
“You need to get to Derek and get him here to me ASAP.” He says through the crystal. Just as I was about to say something he continues. “But he cannot and I mean he cannot teleport here, you have to find another way to get him here and get him here without the Elders finding out about it.” And with that the connection is disconnected.
“How are we going to Derek to your Uncle’s if he can’t teleport?” John asks. The others nod their heads at this and are whispering to each other.
I know that I will have to come up with a plan and it has to be a great one, or it won’t just be Derek that will be in danger, it will be all of us.
We hear the bell for class and all the guys look at me for guidance. I’m not sure what we are going to do regarding Ezera, but I know that we have to keep going to class as if we know nothing and everything that is happening is normal.
Before they can ask, I tell them. “Go to class and act as normal as possible.”
They nod their understanding and one by one leave my bedroom.
When everyone has left Derek shuts the door and asks. “What do I do?”
I’m not sure what he can do, but I know that sitting here doing nothing wasn’t an option. But two things have happened in a short period of time and it isn’t normal, first I find out that Selaria’s father was killed and now Ezera has been captured. Something was going on and I know that it was all connected somehow, and I need to figure out how it is all connected and fast.
“I don’t know, but I feel like it’s connected somehow with Selaria’s father being killed last night and now we find out that your father has been captured, if you can help figure it out, that it would be great.” I tell him and grab my bag and walk over to the door. “I’ll tell the Instructors that you aren’t feeling well, till we know more, I think it best if you stay here and seal the door.” I continue and open the door.
“Go, your already late, I’ll find out if there is a link between my dad and Selaria’s dad.” Derek says sounding worried.
I’m not the only one that was late for class. Frank the Instructor was also late. Usually he was there before any of us. I had only made it to William, Ian, Elarna and Lucy when Frank walked onto the field with four Protectors.
Ian had been about to tell me something when Frank called for everyone’s attention by blowing into his really annoying whistle. He wasn’t even in his usual outfit, instead he was wearing a black suit that all the Protectors wore and his hair instead of long and messy was now crew cut.
He waited until he knew he had everyone’s attention before he started talking. “You all may have noticed that there was a new student and some of you may have been in her first class when she was abruptly escorted away by Elder Zarconian’s assistant.” He takes a deep breath and starts to pace and looks down at a piece of paper that is in his hands. “Even though she had only come into her powers a month ago she would have been in this class today, but she was taken to the Head of the Elders and was told something very devastating.”
Everyone starts whispering, I’m guessing that they are trying to figure out what it could be. Frank didn’t even try to stop them, but instead waited for silence again. He was still pacing, but patiently waiting for everyone to stop talking.
It seems that the Protectors that came with him were getting impatient, because one of them coughed to get everyone’s attention. Frank looks at him and shakes his head, but it works, everyone stops talking.
He takes a deep breath and continues. “She found out that her father was killed by someone in the Rebellion, he was on a dangerous mission and when he tried to capture him, he was sadly blown up, the only way we know it was him, was because there were others there that witnessed it.”
At that everyone starts talking again, this time not in whispers. Frank stops pacing and blows his whistle again to get everyone’s attention.
“I have been told that one of the Rebellion that was involved has been captured.” Frank continues.
I look at the Protectors and realise that this is the first time that there had been Protectors visible on the field, usually they are somewhere hidden, but this time they are visible and there has to be a reason.
I turn to Ian, William, Lucy and Elarna who are staring at me, as if trying to figure out what is going through my mind.
“We will to discuss this later, but for now stop staring at me, there are Protectors out in the open.” I say and they all look to where Frank is pacing again.
“Since the attack was so close to the Academy, the Instructors have been asked to notify everyone that there will be no going out of the Academy grounds for any reasons until notified by the Elders.” He stops pacing and stares at us, as if daring one of us to complain or argue with him. When no-one does he continues. “If you are not happy about this or you need to go outside the Academy grounds please speak to one of the Instructors or write it in letter form and pass it to the Head of the Elder’s secretary.”
I wait for Varsity to complain about not going out of the grounds, since everyone knows she goes shopping every weekend. I look over to where she was sitting and see that she doesn’t look impressed, but she isn’t shocked by this revelation like everyone else. I guess her daddy already told her and he put his foot down and said no.
I can’t believe it, now how are we going to get Derek out of the school? We can’t teleport him, in case we get caught and we have already lost Ezera, we can’t lose Derek as well.
I know that the others will want to know what is going on, but it’s hard enough telling the guys anything, the girls are even harder even with Ian’s book. We are going to have to find a place to meet up where we can’t be disturbed and where no-one can listen in. But that seems a little impossible now that everyone is on high alert. I still can’t believe that this is all happening.
Frank starts the lesson when everyone settles down, but as much as he tries, it isn’t the same. The Protectors are watching and every now and then one will interfere by either helping or to stop what was going on. It was unsettling at times and the others would just look at me giving me questioning and worried looks. It was a pity I couldn’t talk telepathically, because I’d tell them to stop, because it might look suspicious.
When class ends I am relieved, Ian is the first to join me and the others follow suit. I shake my head so none of them speak. I start walking toward my next class. I am lucky that we all have the same class.
It is Ian that speaks first. “What are we going to do?” He whispers only loud enough for me to hear and even then it is difficult.
“I’m not entirely sure, but whatever we are going to do it needs to be fast.” I say loud enough for all of them to hear, and hopefully only them. I glance around and am glad that no-one else is near us.
I know my uncle, and he wouldn’t lie to me, but why was Selaria’s father near Ezera and why would Ezera kill him. The more I think about this, the more it doesn’t make sense and the more I need to discuss this with Selaria, she needs to know that we are not part of this, and we didn’t kill her father.
By the time the last class had finished I had gone over different scenarios on how to tell Selaria that I am part of the Rebellion, and every time I did I saw different ways of her blaming us for her father’s death. Not one scenario did I see had a good outcome, but who knows I might be wrong.
I start walking back to my room so I can check on Derek when I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn and see Thams, he usually didn’t come anywhere near us. Since he is John’s Instructor everything went through John.
“We have a problem.” He says in a hushed but urgent tone and looks around as if making sure that we aren’t being over heard by anyone.
I know that we have a problem, but I’m not sure how much he knew about it. “What is it?” I ask, just to see if it’s the same problem.
“Ezera has been taken and I believe he is here at the Academy.” Thams says pushing me near the garden just outside the entrance that I am heading to. “We need to get Derek out and fast.” He continues but before I can say anything he looks over his shoulder and walks away.
I look around but can’t see anyone. I knew that this wasn’t going to be easy, but I am hoping that it isn’t going to be too hard. I look back to where Thams was walking and can barely see him in the distance.
“Well what is the problem?” I hear near the entrance.
I look and see that it is John. “We have a problem.” Is all I say.
I know that I don’t need to say more. But Thams has me stumped, is Ezera really here and if so, how did he find out and why would he be brought here?
John and I continue the walk back to the dormitory in silence. Not sure if John is quiet for any particular reason or just because he knows that I have a lot to think about, but either way I am grateful for the silence.
By the time we get to the dormitory I notice that the others are working on their school work, but I can tell that they are waiting for me to return. As I walk past them and one by one they get up and join me as I walk up to my room, but none of them say anything.
I open my door and hope that I still find Derek in the room, none of the Instructors had asked about Derek, which isn’t that strange since we are all on alert, but still, it has me on edge.
“How did it go?” I hear Derek ask when we all enter the room. I hadn’t even shut the door when he started speaking.
“Everyone is on high alert, no-one is allowed to leave the Academy’s grounds without authorization from Elder Zarconian.” I say placing my bag down near my desk and walking over to my bed.
“I also heard that they are going to up the security and also the new girl will have more protection because the Rebellion went after her father.” William says.
“No we didn’t.” I say turning to him, that is the last thing I want everyone to think. “I spoke to my uncle and we didn’t go after him.” I tell them when I sit on my bed.
“What are you going to tell Selaria?” Derek asks, looking at me with worry in his eyes.
I can tell that it isn’t just him that is wondering, it was all of them. Selaria thinks that it was the Rebellion that was behind her father’s death, and somehow I have to convince her that it’s not true. I look down and shrug my shoulders.
“I don’t know what I’m going to tell her, but I know I have to tell her the truth.” They all nod their agreement, not that I really need it.
“I not even sure that she knows that there is going to be more security on her, I don’t even think she knows that she has security to begin with.” Ian says stepping forward.
“What do you mean she has security?” I ask him. I am shocked, I didn’t even know that she had security.
“Well, the girls and a couple of us guys have been keeping an eye on her and have noticed a few Warriors following her, they seem to be the same ones, but we are not sure whether she knows that she’s being followed.” Ian answers.
I had no idea that she was being followed and if Ian’s right she may not even know that she is being followed.
“Has anybody noticed if Varsity has any security?” I ask them, looking at each of them, hoping they would shed some light as to why there was security on Selaria.
It is William that spoke up. “As far as I can tell no, Elarna has been keeping an eye on her, seeing what she might know and if she can find out any information on what Elder Zarconian is up to, and she hasn’t seen any security on her at all.” He says and then glanced at Ian. “I was going to bring it up, but Ian said something first.”
“Then why would there be security on Selaria if there isn’t on Varsity, who is Elder Zarconian’s daughter?” Nathaniel asks a little confused. “It seems a little strange.”
It is a question I was asking myself. “I still have to figure out what I’m going to say to her.” I say. I look to each of them wondering if they had any ideas on what I could say and how I could broche the subject.
“She needs to be told, we need to get her to our side and we need to do it fast.” Derek says seriously. It was a voice I was not used to hearing from him, from his father yes, but not from him.
I know that it has to be done and I have to do it tonight. Since the others don’t seem to be able to assist me with how to broach the subject I might as well tell them that I’m going to talk to her.
“I’m going to go talk to her and see what I can find out and what we are going to do.” I finally tell them, I hate not knowing the outcome of situations.
I teleport to Selaria’s room and find her on her bed, still drawing. She looks up I guess because she too can feel the connection that we both have.
“And what are you doing here?” She asks, she may have a serious look on her face and sounded serious, but I feel that she is grateful that I’m here.
“I have a few things that I need to tell you.” I tell her, as serious as I can.
I know that this is going to be hard. First I have to tell her that the man that she drew is with the Rebellion and yes the Elders did capture him, but no, he did not kill her father, I hope.
“Ok what is it, I can’t stand the suspense.” She says walking over to me, I can feel that she is worried and confused.
I take a deep breath, hoping that this won’t be so hard and that she believes me. “It’s about your father.” I say, not knowing where to start, maybe I should of asked if she knew that she had her own security detail.
“What about my father?” She asks hesitantly standing in front of me, with a questioning look on her face.
I couldn’t take it anymore and walk over to her desk and sit down, placing my head in my hands. “I know the man that you drew.” I say, not wanting to look at her, not wanting to see betrayal all over her face.
“What do you mean, you know the man that I drew?” She asks, when I don’t answer she continues. “Which man are you talking about?” I can hear it in her voice, she’s scared and upset, what’s even worse I can feel it.
I look up at her and the look on her face says it all, it’s as if I had just ripped out her heart and stomped on it. She knew before I said it and was shaking her head.
“The man you were told killed your father.” I say quietly as if whispering it won’t hurt her so much, but it did.
She shakes her head and she kept shaking it as she moved away from me, as if I was the one that killed her father.
“No, no this can’t be happening, he said I could trust you, he told me that I had to find you and trust you.” She says, more to herself than to me.
“But he didn’t kill your father, I know that for certain.” I tell her, hoping that she believes me.
I am shocked, why would her father have said that? He didn’t even know me. Then I feel it, confusion, but it wasn’t coming from me. I look up and notice that she has her head to the side, I can hear, even faintly that something isn’t right, she was thinking about something, but I just couldn’t grasp it.
I had to ask, I had to know what she was thinking. “What is it?”
She looks at me, but it isn’t the same look as before, it is different. “You tell me you know this man.” She says.
I can tell that she isn’t finished so I sit and wait. I know I have to be patient.
She starts again. “If you know him then…” She didn’t finish, but realization shows on her face before she finishes. “Your part of the Rebellion as well.”
I look down and hope that somehow we will be able to work through this. “Yes, yes I’m part of the Rebellion.” I say, not wanting to look up at her.
What I wasn’t expecting when I said it, was to hear her squealing, not the I’m scared kind, the I’m happy kind. “Oh My God, you are part of the Rebellion.” She says.
I look up and see that she is doing this small jumping up and down on the spot thing, and doing little squeals like she just got the best gift she ever received. I am shocked, really shocked.
“You’re not mad?” I ask confused, wondering if I am dreaming, or if this could even be possible.
“Mad?” She asks shocked, at least she stopped jumping up and down and squealing. “No I’m not mad, surprised, but not mad.” She continues.
That is a relief, I can work with surprised, as long as it doesn’t mean that I don’t need to flee with Derek.
“So are you going to go and tell your security or Zarconian that I’m with the Rebellion?” I ask.
Her face changes really quickly that I’m not even prepared for it. I can feel that she is shocked and confused. “What do you mean security?” She asks.
After hearing that I know that she doesn’t know that she has a security detail. “There were sightings of some Warriors following you.” I tell her, still a little confused about the fact that she doesn’t seem upset or freaked out that I’m part of the Rebellion.
“Who saw them?” She asks, looking at me with a puzzled look on her face.
“Ian said that the girls have noticed that you have been followed, and even a couple of the guys have also seen them.” I tell her, not keeping anything back.
If I want her to join us and be on our side, I have to tell her everything and hope and pray that she doesn’t go to Elder Zarconian.
“So you also have people watching me.” She says sounding upset. “I haven’t been here twenty four hours and I already have people spying on me.” She continues getting worked up.
I can feel her anger and betrayal. It isn’t like I was trying to upset or betray her, but we have to be careful who we tell, technically everyone is being watched by us. Some to see what they know about the Elders, some to see if they might be able to join us and some to make sure that we aren’t revealed and are put in danger.
“Look I’m sorry that you are upset about what we were doing, but what did you expect?” I ask her, getting a little angry myself
“I expected you to trust me, I trusted you.” She huffs folding her arms and glaring at me.
What did she mean by trusted me, has she changed her mind? We haven’t and don’t know each other that well yet, but she already trusts me.
“It’s not just me that I have to think about and since you have security I wasn’t sure who’s side you were on.” I say to her getting up and going over to her.
“Look something isn’t right, first I’m brought here, then my dad is killed and now I find out that I’m being followed.” She says, standing up and walking away from me.
I can see and feel that she is getting worked up, but she was right, something wasn’t right, because not even Varsity has anyone watching her movements like Selaria is.
“I need to find out why I’m being followed and you need to tell me more about the Rebellion.” She says turning and staring straight at me.
“Fine, but first we need to find another place to meet, so it might take a day or two.” I tell her, hoping that she can wait that long.
“I don’t have to go to classes for a while so I’ll look around for a place.” She says going back to pacing around the room.
“But you have warriors watching you.” I remind her. “Where ever we meet up can’t have anyone else there listening in.” I continue, walking over to her and stopping her.
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that I’m not followed.” She tells me, but I’m still worried that she might be followed.
But I can see that her mind is made up and that she is going to go anyway. “Fine, but be careful.” I say and then I hear a beep.
We both look around and then I feel it, someone was coming to Selaria’s room without permission.
Before either of us can react Derek is standing before us. “I’m sorry, but they are looking for me and they are about to go into our room, also if you are going to teleport back to the dorm, don’t, because they are watching.” He says quickly.
Both Selaria and I are standing there shocked, but it was Selaria that spoke first. “And who are you?” She asks.
“Oh, I’m Derek.” He says smiling and holding out his hand for her to shake, he didn’t give any other information, which means I am going to have to.
“This is Ezera’s son, the guy that you drew the picture of.” I say, wondering what she is going to do.
For a minute Derek looks as if he was going to run, but then Selaria says. “Well you can both stay here until it’s clear if you want and I’ll go over the map for some ideas for a place to meet up.”
“We also need to find a way to get Derek out of the Academy.” I tell her, she looks at us for a moment and it’s as if something clicks, but she doesn’t say anything, she just nods.
