It was never going to be easy. My uncle always says that ‘if it was easy, we were doing it all wrong.’ So I knew that I was doing something right, because being away from Selaria seems to be getting harder as the minutes go by.
“Godric do you have any more juice?” Derek asks, looking in the tiny fridge that we have in our room.
Derek and I just finished doing a mix of magic, sparing and hand to hand combat, since he was no longer going to classes. Derek wanted more juice, if he wasn’t drinking coffee he was drinking juice.
“No, you drank the last of it.” I say going over the work we were given from our teachers.
I notice that after lunch the link between Selaria and I had disappeared for about an hour. I was starting to wonder if she was mad at me and was able to block me from sensing her, but then it came back like it had never left.
“Yo, dude there was some under your bed.” Derek says sitting in the chair beside me with a glass of orange juice, he seems to have a nose for finding juice.
“I’m heading for the shower than I might catch up the rest of the studying that I’m meant to be doing while I’m here.” I tell him getting up from the chair that I was sitting in.
“Have you heard from Keven?” Derek asks looking up from the book.
I look at him and then to the door, “Yeah, he said that she found a spot.”
“Cool, can I join you?” He asks, looking over at me. “Maybe we can get me out of here from the spot she found.” He continues.
“Yeah sure.” I say to him and then head out to the showers. Having a shower seems to always helps me think.
I know that I will have to tell my uncle that we have a spot, I had already told him that I told Selaria everything, he wasn’t mad, in fact he asked why I hadn’t told her to begin with that I was part of the Rebellion.
After having a shower I head back to my room to find the others standing there, waiting for me with worried looks on their faces.
“What is it?” I ask them, after I notice the looks on their faces and starting to become worried.
“Selaria didn’t come to dinner and Hannah said that she told them that she wasn’t feeling well.” Ian says, I can tell from his voice that he is concerned.
“I’m sure it’s nothing.” I tell them, I can feel that she isn’t sick, she was a little frustrated, but that was all. I was about to say something else when I saw the crystal light up.
“Answer.” I say grabbing the crystal and holding it in front of me. “Yes uncle.”
“We won’t be able to hold another meeting until we can figure out who the traitor is.” I hear him say through the crystal.
“But if we don’t hold a meeting we won’t be able to figure it out.” I say to him.
I wish he called later because we were about to go join Selaria at the place where we are going to hold our own meeting, at a place that she had shown me earlier through the link.
“I know, but if we hold a premature meeting it might scare the traitor into hiding, as far as they know, nobody knows about Ezera and I don’t want them to have any more information on what we are planning.” He says, using a tone that I know all too well, he isn’t happy about the situation, but he is trying to figure a plan to figure out who the traitor is. “Just find a way to get Derek out of there ASAP.”
I know that he wants to find Ezera as much as I do and nearly as much as Derek does, but he doesn’t have a plan yet and neither do I.
“I will do my best to find out what I can here, but we will wait for you to tell us when we can have a meeting and what you want us to do.” I say and hang up.
I walk over to the window and look out. I turn to the others and see that they are all waiting for me to do or say something. But I don’t know what I am going to do.
“We should probably get going, we don’t want to keep her waiting.” Derek says, I can tell from his voice that he wants out of the Academy and out fast.
I nod and we all teleport to the location that Selaria gave me, we decided that the classroom was too close for comfort. She was standing in the middle of the clearing, looking out toward the forest.
I’m not sure if she felt me arrive, but she didn’t look at us until Ian says. “Wow this place looks amazing.”
She turns and smiles, but it is a ghost of a smile. Something was bothering her and I had to find out what it is, but I’ll have to wait until we are alone.
“Yeah I thought it would be a good spot.” She says.
“How did you find this place?” Derek asks before I could.
I haven’t even seen it on the academy’s map until this morning when I had another look, but it’s on the outskirts of the academy.
“I just stumbled across it.” I know that she was lying, but I’m not going to call her on it right now.
I turn away from Selaria and see Derek standing beside me.
“Is everything alright?” He whispers.
“Yeah, just thinking.” I tell him, but seeing his face he knew that whatever I’m thinking about, has nothing to do with the Rebellion.
“Shall we get started?” I hear Selaria ask from a seat opposite to where I am standing.
“Yeah, let’s get started.” I say walking over and sitting beside her.
We were there for at least two hours, Selaria asking questions and we answer them the best we can. I didn’t think it was ever going to end, but I’m glad that it did. I could feel that she was holding something back and I tried to ask her about it, but she wouldn’t tell me.
We are about to leave when Selaria says. “I know how we can get Derek out, but we will have to do it now.”
I’m not sure why she left it until now to say something, but I am glad that she did. Maybe this is what she has been hiding.
“How?” I ask, I notice the others were standing there watching us.
“I don’t care how, what I care about is will anyone notice?” Derek asks walking toward Selaria.
I was hoping to stay behind and talk to her for a bit, but if we can get Derek out of here and without anyone knowing, then I am willing to give up a few minutes or the rest of the night away from Selaria to do it.
“It’s easy, I used to do it with my dad.” She says, as if that is all she needs to say. She must have realised that we needed more information because she continues. “As long as Derek knows where he is going, I can use my powers to get him there.”
I am shocked, I have never heard of such a thing before. But I was willing to give it a shot, but the question is, is Derek willing to give it a shot.
“Can you really do that?” He asks a little sceptical.
“Yeah, if they hadn’t felt me do it with my dad before why would they know now?” She asks looking at Derek and then each of us.
I’m not sure she was looking at all of us for permission, but I can see Derek’s face, he is contemplating it, I am contemplating it.
“Ok, let’s do it.” Derek says walking toward Selaria. “What do I have to do?” He asks when he reaches her.
“Just envision where you want to go.” She says giving him a gentle smile.
I don’t know what is going to happen, but when he nods he disappears as if he had teleported.
“Where is he?” I hear a few of the guys ask.
“He is safe right?” I look at her and ask.
She shrugs her shoulders. “As long as where he was thinking of was a safe place.” She says directly to me.
I can tell by her emotions that she isn’t a hundred percent sure, but she is hoping. It was the best and the most we could all think and hope for. I know that she wouldn’t have done it if it was dangerous, but I’ll have to contact my Uncle to make sure that he is there when I get back to my room.
It seems that now that Derek is gone the others decide to leave as well, which left me alone with Selaria. I don’t know what I was going to say to her, but I know I have to ask about the clearing and the missing time, I just don’t know how.
“I know what you’re wondering about, I can feel it.” She says, walking over to me. She sits down on the log that we had been sitting on and patted the spot beside her.
“How did you find this place?” I ask deciding to go for the easy one first, I still needed time to figure out how to ask the other question.
“The same reason you couldn’t feel me earlier.” She says and put her head in her hands, as if she didn’t want me to see her face.
I pull her hands away from her face and made her look at me. “I understand that you didn’t like the fact that I had a few of the others watching you, but I had no choice.” I tell her, hoping she would see how sincere I was and how sorry I am.
“I know, but that’s not the reason you couldn’t feel me.” She says, looking at the ground.
I can feel her reservation, but I don’t know why. “You can tell me anything.” I say, hoping that will make it easier for her.
She huffs and then looks up at me. “My ancestor took me back to the past, where it all began and that’s how I found the clearing and why you couldn’t feel me.” She says really quickly.
“Your ancestor?” I ask confused.
I heard of such things happening, and how they can help you on your path, but it has never happened to me, and Derek and I used to laugh about people that said that it happened. But I can feel that it did happen to Selaria.
“Yeah, but that isn’t even the weird bit.” She says looking up at me.
There is an even weirder bit? I’m not sure what to make of all this, but I know I have to sit there and let her tell me, even if I’m not sure I believe it myself.
“She wants me to find a book, it’s called ‘The Book of Prophecies’.” She says looking at me, as if for help or reassurance.
I don’t know how I was going to give either, but no matter what I was going to do and no matter how hard or how long it took me I am going to help her.
“Ok, well do you know where this book is?” I ask, knowing that where ever she saw it or was told where it was would be the best place to start looking.
“No, she said that it was moved and that I had to find it.” She says yawning.
I can feel that she is tired, and that questioning her too much tonight probably isn’t the best thing to do.
“Go to bed and we will start the search tomorrow.” I tell her and help her stand.
When she finally stands I give her a quick kiss and teleport both of us to her room. She smiles at me and gives me a quick hug and turns and walks into her bathroom.
I finally get to my bedroom when I hear a knock at the door I had started to take off my clothes and only have my shorts on.
“Yeah?” I ask hoping it isn’t really important.
“Is it ok if I come in?” I hear John ask.
“Sure.” I say and he walks in. “What’s up?” I ask sitting on my bed.
“Do you know if Derek got away ok?” He asks standing in the middle of the room.
“I’m not sure, I was just about to call my uncle to find out.” I say reaching for the crystal.
I was expecting to wait a few minutes like usual, but the moment I thought about my uncle the crystal changed and I hear Derek’s voice on the other end.
“Your mum is here.” Derek says.
I knew that she wouldn’t be there just to say hello, she always has a reason for doing anything and showing up would mean that there was either something wrong or she needed me to do something.
“Is everything ok?” I ask.
That’s when I hear the sobs. “Sweetie, I need to tell both of you something.” She says between the sobs.
“What?” I ask.
I have never seen or heard my mother cry, I mean she is a kind caring person with a soft heart, but she rarely cries and if she does, it isn’t where I can see or hear.
“I found out that Ezera has been killed or worse taken, your Uncle told me tonight, it must be hard for you Derek” My mum says and then suddenly starts crying again.
“Yeah, but I know that when we find out who did take him they won’t live long.” I hear Derek say.
“Mum, why are you getting so upset?” I ask confused as to why she was upset.
“We were going to wait until the holidays, but Ezera asked me to marry him.” She sobs.
I can’t see Derek’s face, but I am shocked, I knew they had been getting close since my dad was killed by the Elders. I didn’t think they were this close, but we didn’t always get to see them, we were mostly here.
“I’m sure my dad is going to be ok.” I hear Derek say comforting my mum.
“What did you say?” I ask, not knowing what else to say.
“I said yes.” I hear her say.
I know that she loved my dad, but he had been dead now for ten years and Derek and I used to joke around about his dad and my mom getting together and then we could really be brothers, but I didn’t think it would really happen.
“Well congratulations.” I hear Derek say sounding really happy about it.
I turn and notice that John is still in the room and his mouth is open in shock. He must have known that I was watching because he recovered and then pointed to the door, as if asking if I wanted him to leave. I thought about it for a moment and nodded and put my finger to my lips, hoping he got the point that I didn’t want anyone else to know about this.
The moment John left I say. “Yeah mum that’s great, now I’m going to work as hard as I can to get him back for you.”
“Do you really mean it, or are you just trying to make me feel better?” I hear her ask.
For a moment I think it is to just make her feel better, but after my father, I didn’t think of anyone could make my mother happy. I wonder how long they have been keeping this a secret? I shouldn’t be surprised, I know that she had to move on sooner or later and my dad has been dead ten years now.
“No mum, I mean it, and I mean what I said about finding out what happened to him.” I say.
“That’s nice of you darling, but you can’t do that, you can’t let them know that you are part of the Rebellion, and they will know when you start asking questions.” I hear her say and before I can reply she continues. “I don’t want you getting caught as well.”
I know that Elder Zarconian is interested in Selaria and I might be able to get her to find out some information about whether or not Ezera is alive and if he is where they have him.
“Mum I won’t, I’ll talk to Selaria and see if she can find out anything about what happened to him.” I say and then realise that I haven’t told her anything about Selaria.
“Is she the girl you’ve been dreaming about?” She asks and I can tell that she’s trying not to cry.
“Yeah she is and Elder Zarconian is interested in her and I’ll see if she’s willing to find out what’s going on.” I tell her.
I can only hope that she’ll help, because I have no other way in finding out myself.
“I don’t want her getting caught or in any trouble either.” I hear her say and it’s in the voice both myself and Derek have heard many times, it was her serious voice or as we used to call it, her mum voice.
“I don’t want her to get into trouble either, but we need to at least try.” I say to her hoping that she will understand what I’m saying.
“Godric I know you think it’s worth the risk, but I don’t.” She says, I can hear the anger coming out in her voice, she is starting to lose her patience which was rarely done.
“I’m sorry but I agree with Godric.” I hear Derek say.
It was strange that Derek had kept silent for so long, at first I didn’t think that he was even there anymore. Maybe he wasn’t and only just came back, or maybe he was thinking about what we were saying and didn’t want to interrupt too soon.
“Derek…” My mother starts to say and then was interrupted my Derek.
“You aren’t there at the Academy you don’t see what we see. Elder Zarconian is giving her a lot of attention and she doesn’t even need to go to classes since her father was killed, so she is able to walk around the Academy freely and do whatever she wants to do.” Derek says then there is a scrapping sound like he was getting up or sitting in his chair. “If she plays this right, she can find out what happened to him and if he’s alive where he is, Elder Zarconian told her that my father killed her father.” Derek continues and by the sound of it he has started to pace, which means he got up.
“I agree and I feel that it’s our best option.” I say backing Derek as he had just backed me and before my mother could say anything I continue. “I love her and I trust that she will know what to do, I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to her and I will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.”
“Well it looks like I’ve been out voted on this.” I hear my mother say, I can tell by her voice that she isn’t happy with the decision. “As long as she is willing to do it and you aren’t pushing her into doing this, then I guess I have no way of stopping you.”
Now all I have to do was to get her to do this willingly. Hopefully she wants to do it and I don’t have to beg her to do it.
I know there isn’t much else to say, but I don’t want to hang up. It felt like ages since I had spoken to my mother, even though I know it has only been a few months, but being away from her is always hard, since it’s only the two of us.
“You can’t do anything that will get you noticed, you aren’t the only one there and you have to protect them.” I hear her say and I can tell by her voice that she doesn’t want to hang up either. “I want to be able to see you next holidays.”
I know she means well, and I know that I’m not the only one that I need to keep safe and now with Selaria here I have to be even more careful.
“Don’t worry, Godric is careful and now with Selaria there, I’m sure he’s going to be even more careful.” I hear Derek say.
I am glad that he is there, comforting my mother, who will soon be our mother.
“Is Godric still there?” I hear my Uncle ask.
“Yeah he is.” I hear my mother answer, by the sound of a chair moving I’m guessing either she is standing up or my uncle is sitting down.
I’m hoping he isn’t mad that I called, I wanted to make sure that Derek made it there ok.
“Has John found out anymore in regards to another group?” I hear my Uncle ask in a hurried voice. He sounds a lot closer, so I’m guessing that he sat down.
“We spoke about it tonight, and he is positive there is, but trying to find out who’s in it is difficult.” I tell him, I thought Derek might of said something, but maybe he thought it best that I do it.
“Does he have proof?” My Uncle asks sounding curious.
“He did, but even with the proof that he has, but he is unable to find out who is in it.” I say remembering the conversation. “The only people he can put with the other group are those that were taken.” I continue before my Uncle can jump in.
“Ask him for the names of the people and any other proof he may have and send it to me.” I hear him say. “Derek said that Selaria sent him here, how powerful is she?” He asks sounding curious.
Before I can answer John bursts into the room. “Elder Zarconian is here with Warriors, Protectors and Trackers looking for Derek, hang up.” He says sounding panicked and then runs out of my room.
I barely had time to hang up and hide the crystal when Elder Zarconian walks into my room.
“Where is Derek?” He asks looking around the room, as if he is looking for him.
I am glad he left his stuff, because that would have been hard to explain. “He told me he wasn’t feeling well, so I assume that he’s in the infirmary.” I say casually, and making it look like I had been reading a book and continuing to do so.
I can feel Selaria in my mind, it is in the distant but she is there, I am glad that she was, it is comforting to have someone there that knows what is going on.
“When did he tell you this?” Elder Zarconian demands angrily and starts going through Derek’s things and looking around the room casually.
“Yesterday after lunch, and said he was going to the infirmary, this morning and I haven’t seen him since.” I tell him, hoping that he believes me.
“Look around and see if he took anything.” Elder Zarconian says.
I know it is to the men that came with him, but I decide to make it seem as if I thought he was talking to me and get up and start looking around.
“What do you think you’re doing?” He asks me furiously when he notices.
“You said to look around, so I am.” I answer and pretend to start looking around the room.
“Not you, the Warriors, Protectors and Trackers that came with me.” Elder Zarconian yells.
I can tell that I am making him mad and I was enjoying it, but then I remember that I have to keep a low profile for the others. I get back onto my bed and lay back down, and continue to pretend to read the book I have in my hands. After a few seconds I realise that the lights would be turning off soon.
“Aren’t the lights going to be turned off soon?” I ask.
He turns and glares at me. “Not until I find out where Derek is.” He snarls and goes back to searching Derek’s desk.
“So will I be excused from training tomorrow, because I’ll be too tired if I don’t go to sleep soon.” I say, hoping he’ll leave and continue the search tomorrow, so I can search the places I know they haven’t gotten to yet to make sure that there aren’t any incriminating stuff that could get the rest of us in trouble.
The others look at Elder Zarconian and one says. “I’m pretty sure he has a test tomorrow morning.”
Elder Zarconian stops going through the books, which I am glad because I know that one of them is one we don’t want the Elders getting their hands on.
“Everyone out, good night Godric, and please leave your room unlocked tomorrow so the men can finish going through it, so we can find Derek.” And with that he storms out of the room, with the others following close behind him.
