Chapter 16
I moved in with Simon. The senator knew about me, so, more than likely, he knew about Doug and Todd, too. I couldn’t go home to my adopted parents. The dorm was out of the question. Simon was the least connected to me. In other words, I had no other choice.
Todd went to classes for me. Todd took notes for me. Doug covered my shifts at work. Two days went by like two months. I watched the news from Simon’s guest room. His house was done up in muted tans, muted browns, and muted greens. I felt muted. I also felt alone, as the others were commanded to stay incommunicado with me.
The shades were drawn. Simon brought me my meals. I waited. Not patiently, but I waited just the same.
And then the headlines hit:
Local Hero Murdered!
Masked Avenger Killed in Foiled Robbery Attempt!
