Chapter Twelve: Howls in the Night

We were all soundly asleep when I heard Eric yell, “Everyone get up!” I jumped up out of my bedroll and rubbed my eyes. I looked around at the others.
Lilly was standing up a tired look on her face. She looked around, and then she looks at Eric. “What was that about?” She asks him annoyed.
“You didn't hear that?” He asks quietly.
She looks around. “Hear what? It's quiet out...” she is interrupted by a howl.
“Wolves,” I whisper. Lilly looks at me.
“Get in the carriage. We will head out now. I don't think they'll attack us if we stay moving in a group.” Lilly says to me.
I nod my head and then grab my things and get into the carriage. Everyone gathers their stuff and loads their horses.
We can hear the howling getting louder. It's coming from behind us. So we continue towards the edge of the woods. We don't go fast, but we also don't go slowly. We keep a steady pace in case the horses need to run.
As we get to the edge of the forest, we see a large castle ahead. There is no town, just a massive castle. We all keep heading towards the castle as the sound of the wolves gets closer.
It feels like the horses can't go fast enough. There is another problem as well. Dawn is slowly approaching. In an hour the sun will be up.
I lean my head out of the carriage window and yell at Eric.
“We need to go faster; they are catching up. Plus, the sun is going to be up soon.”
He nods letting me know he heard me and urges his horse to go faster. After what feels like forever, we get to the castle gates. They are shut, so Lilly gets down and kicks them open with her strength.
Just as she mounts her horse the sun begins to rise; she lets out a gasp. She jumps off her horse tossing the reins to Eric and dives into the open carriage door.
Brelear joins us a few moments later. Then we hear it the howls behind us.
And a howl in front of us…
