Saphirra stood in the middle of the dance floor staring after the spot where he was before disappearing out of her sight. Why does he always leave me this way? She thought to herself. Avianna quickly jumped in and began twirling her sister around, "Sister, you were beginning to look foolish out here. Do my eyes deceive me or did you almost kiss the stable boy?" Saphirra looked at her sister a long moment before answering, "He asked me to meet him tonight. Should I go?"
Avianna's brow furrowed and she looked away, "Sister, I know you deserve all of the happiness this life has to offer. If you love Christopher, but desire another then are you doing a disservice to yourself by not exploring that desire? I do not know the answer to that, but I do know it is better to have lived and loved than to die everyday in loneliness."
Saphirra contemplated what her sister had said to her and was a bit surprised. "Avi, you are wise beyond your years sister, you always have been an old soul. You are too angelic for this life we have been given I am afraid. Perhaps you are right, I do not want to live wondering what may have happened if I had went."
"Of course I am right. I believe I should have been the older sister!" she teased with a smile. "Go to him tonight and I will make sure no one is the wiser." "Thank you Avianna, you are a marvelous sister, I do not deserve you." She leaned in and hugged her sister.
"Ladies, may I cut in?" Christopher smiled as he placed his hand out for Saphirra's. "Of course you may dance with me Christopher!" Avianna grabbed his hand as they both laughed and began to dance. Saphirra smiled and thought about what a gentleman he was and maybe her sister was more deserving of him than she was. He deserves more than someone who has an untrue heart.
Saphirra was interrupted by a tap on the shoulder, "Princess, do you remember me?" She turned around to face a red headed beauty. "Twilia! My you look exquisite, I have not seen you in so long, how have you been?" "It has been a long time," she said squeezing her hands. "I wondered if I may speak to you in private for a moment?" Saphirra nodded and led her away to a outside garden behind the courtyard.
Twilia looked at the ground as Saphirra waited patiently for her to speak, "I am afraid this is quite awkward Your Highness and I apologize for bringing this up. You see, Rhett is my closest friend to this day and he has told me of your interactions." Saphirra's eyes widened and her face paled, "Twilia, I assure you whatever you have hear is not true and there is nothing to be concerned about."
"Saphirra, I know the truth for I have read the letters and I have heard about your day together. I have seen the secret looks shared between the two of you. I only want to ask this of you, if you are not planning to choose Rhett, please let him go. Just between you and I, he has planned to marry you since we were children in the meadow so even though you have only known him for a short time in your adult life and spent a small amount of time together, this is true love in his eyes. It is not fair for you to allow him to fall deeper while you are planning your wedding to another man. I beg of you please either let him go before it is too late, though I fear it was too late the second you took his hand to dance, or allow him to pursue you and end your engagement. Rhett may love you, but I truly love him and he needs a woman who desires him and only him, not a lady who cannot decide where her loyalties lie Your Highness. Pardon my honesty, I know it is not my place to speak on this, but he needs someone whose heart is true to him as his is to theirs."
Saphirra stared at her in shock that she would be speak to bodly, but she also respected her ability to speak without fear. She had always admired Twilia's outspoken spirit and her honesty and had even tried to model it herself at times. "Twilia, I understand that you probably think my intentions are not pure, but I assure you they are. I do truly care for Rhett, I just do not know what the right decision is. I am expected to marry Christopher and until now, I never doubted that decision. Now, I feel things I have never felt before when I am with Rhett. I find myself wishing I was not a royal at times so I can be free to be with him and grow old together on a farm somewhere, but alas I do not have that option. I have a duty to my kingdom and my people to fulfill my duty. I wish things were not this way, but they are.
Twilia looked at her and sighed, "It seems I was mistaken and I owe you an apology. I believed you were only pursuing Rhett to escape your duties and experience freedom. I see now by the way your eyes shine when you speak of him that this is more than that. I can see you truly do care for and desire Rhett. I am sorry for thinking less of you. I only ask that you protect his heart, if you cannot be with him fully, then release him."
Saphirra sighed as her eyes looked sad, "You may be right Twilia, but I am afraid you are correct about something else. It was too late for me the second his eyes met mine."
