Chapter 3: Breaking Chains
As I walked out of my room, on my way to the stairs, Carol, the housekeeper, pulled up in front of me. I could remember that, as long as I could remember, Carol had been with our family. She wasn’t just a cook or a cleaner; she had helped raise my father.
In any family, she was always the backbone—kind but always honest and unyielding in the matter of respect. You’d feel her wrath no matter who you were if you crossed her.
"Good morning, little moon. She grabbed my hand and said, 'I'm so happy to see you out of bed.'
"Morning, Aunt Carol. Eventually, I had to get up, didn't I? I replied, 'You can thank Lila and Mom for that.' The conversation exhausted me, but I was polite out of habit. Still, it was Carol.
While I was cleaning, I found this in your mother’s study." Wear it. Carol placed a delicate gold necklace with an infinity symbol in my hand, 'It’ll give you the strength it once gave her when this pack doubted her bond with Victor.'
It was simple, but beautiful. I remembered my mother’s words in the dream for a moment. I thanked her and hugged Carol tightly.
"Thank you, Carol. All three generations of women in this family are struggling with this pack. I was a full-blooded wolf this time, and still they took my mate from me, I said, trying to hold back the tears.
It broke something inside me when Carol looked at me with pity.
"Not you too, Auntie. Don’t look at me like that. A single tear escaped my eye. 'I can’t take it,' I said.
"I’m sorry, little moon. I’ve seen your grandmother, your mother, and now you face this treatment. Carol said softly, It breaks my heart.
‘If we keep talking about this, I’ll lose it.’ If I show up with ruined makeup, Lila will never forgive you. Can you help me put this on?" I lifted my hair and handed her the necklace.
"There. Carol wiped the stray tear from my face and smiled fondly. 'You look just like her.'
"She was a beautiful woman, your mother," she said.
"Thank you, Aunt Carol. I gave her one last hug and said, 'This is beautiful.'
You've loaded your bags into the car and are ready to depart. Take this time to find the strength your mother had, even in her hardest days. Carol reminded me, "She's still a part of you."
"I’ll try. See you soon, Auntie. I squeezed her hand and kissed her cheek. 'I'll send pictures.'
I added, with a small laugh, "Bye, old moon," using the nickname I had called her as a child.
I chuckled and shook my head as I descended the stairs. Before I even reached the bottom, the scent of my mate hit me. I followed it to my dad’s office. I stood outside and knocked three times, a signal that I was there.
My dad called in his businesslike tone, 'Come in, Tessa.'
I rolled my shoulders back, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
The room was full. Lila sat on the kiddie couch to the left, while my mother stood beside my father, rubbing his arm. Theo stood next to her. Alpha Samson Blake sat across from my dad, who sat behind his desk, looking stern. My supposed mate, Dimon James, stood to the right, his eyes darkening as he looked me over.
I didn't pay attention to the way his gaze lingered. Men.
"Alpha Samson. I crossed over to kiss my father's cheek after nodding at them curtly.
Dimon said, almost uncertainly, his eyes still tracing over me, "You look beautiful, Tessa."
Alpha Samson added, his tone questioning, "You’re dressed like you’re leaving."
I replied, keeping my voice steady, 'Yes.' I’m going to be visiting Grandpa Owen for a few weeks, maybe longer. I need some fresh air."
Zara, my wolf, was fighting to fight back, but Dimon’s scent was all overwhelming. I refused to let her mark him as ours.
Alpha Samson shot a glance at his son and said, "I think that’s a wise decision." "It would give Dimon time to bond with his mate without adding the extra tension."
His eyes flickered with something unreadable as he looked at me, and he growled lowly. I thought for a moment that he might feel the same pain I did.
His words were sharp when he finally spoke. Your wolf knows you as his mate, Tessa, but I don’t. There he told me it was best if you gave us space, so I could fully commit to Mira without your scent lingering."
His words lanced through me like a blade. Lila gasped, Theo growled, but I kept my face blank. My father had trained me for years to never show pain in front of an enemy.
I said evenly, though my voice slightly trembled, 'That makes sense.' "I'll stay away for as long as you need to form a bond with Mira." "I'll expect you to reject me formally before your ceremony."
Surprise widened Dimon’s eyes.
I turned to Alpha Samson. I hope you’ll make sure your son follows through. "If he finishes his mating with Mira, it’ll be easier for all of us if I’m no longer bound to him."
"Don’t you understand that if you reject a true mate, his wolf will fight him?" Alpha Samson asked.
"Of course. His wolf won’t mark her unless he does,' I said, looking at Dimon. “Okay, let’s make it easy, shall we?” Reject me now. Then you can be free to love your chosen mate without complications."
Silence filled the room. Dimon looked surprised, and for a second I thought he might actually do it.
But Alpha Samson intervened. "Let’s not rush into this. This union between yourself and Mira is what is good for the pack, Tessa. She’s of alpha blood. The pups will strengthen the pack. Surely you understand?"
I laughed bitterly.
"Mates are sacred. Our entire lives have taught us this. But now, the rules change because it suits you." My annoyance permeated my words.
"Watch your tone. In the place of an alpha, Alpha Samson stood up.
I looked him in the eye and took a calming breath. "Very well. The pack comes first. I’ll leave immediately."
I turned to Lila and said, "Let’s go. We’ve got a train to catch."
I walked out of the office without another word, head held high. He might have broken my heart, but I wouldn’t let him see me break. Not today.
