Chapter 4: Breaking Free

Chapter 4: Breaking Free Before I could climb into the car with Lila, Dimon James sprinted out. He asked sharply, “Why aren’t warriors escorting you to your grandfather's?" I replied flatly, “Humans can’t hurt me.” “What do you want, Dimon?" "Please, please, I need you to believe me," he said with effort. It wasn’t my idea to choose Mira. That was the only way to handle the rogue situation. I gave an unimpressed eyebrow raise. “Why does the rogue problem concern you mating with Mira?" “She’s the daughter of the Alpha Rogue.” He threatened war if I didn't choose her as my mate, his words tumbling out. My father reasoned it wasn't worth putting the pack at risk, so I consented. "We have three hundred warriors. They have a thousand. People would die, Tessa. Please understand." As I scoffed, a bitter sound filled my throat. A coward. A coward bowing to a rogue’s demands was my mate. They knew mates were sacred. But Dimon? Mira was his shield, and he was hiding behind her. Athena growled from inside my head, her anger equal to my own. His disagreeable face gawked at Theo, who threw his hands in the air in disbelief. “Seriously? That’s your excuse? Do you even hear yourself? How can you be an alpha if you can’t even do that?" Dimon’s eyes darkened. “You’re still a beta in training.” Or I’ll find someone else for your position; watch your tone." Theo stood firm. “Go ahead. This pack has no other beta family. I bet Mira’s behind this; something’s off here. Dimon, I hope the rumours aren’t true. Did you take her virtue and then let her father hold us hostage?" It got tense in the air. I looked at Lila, then at Ivy, who looked just as confused. There was a flicker of defiance in his eyes, but he seemed ashamed. “That’s just gossip. He stepped towards me and grabbed my hand, saying, 'I would never do that.' “Tessa, you know me. I was keeping my promise to you, but my father made me do it. The pack has to come first.” My heart sank, and I pulled my hand away. “Goodbye, Dimon. Don’t call me. Inform Mira that despite the greener grass, snow still falls. She’ll understand." He furrowed his brows, but I didn’t explain. I had always envied Mira’s white wolf. She consistently expressed her desire for what I had, implying that it was always better on the other side. I climbed into my car and turned to Dimon, one last time. “Oh, and Dimon?” I revved the engine and rolled down the window. “Get out of my way." While I sped up out of the driveway, Lila played Selena's "Need Me" song, insufficiently optimistic that we would arrive within a few miles. Before we reached the pack border, I applied the brakes forcefully. “Why’d you stop? Lila asked, her voice filled with panic. “Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts,” he said. “No. I stepped out of the car. ‘I just want to make it final,’ I said. I stood at the edge of the border, one foot on pack land, the other on neutral territory. By Tessa Willow, I reject Dimon James as my mate. From now on, Tessa Willow, I accept my status as a rogue and cut all ties with the Silver Moon Clan." A sharp pain shot through my head, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. I knew it was my father; he’d felt the rejection and would come for us. I got back into the car and hit the gas. Her shocked, concerned face stared down at me. She said softly, “Dad’s ordering us to come back." I firmly stated, "I'm not going back." I will not sit around and let Dimon marry someone else. The better I am, the farther away. I don’t want to feel it when he mates with her." Her neck curled as we drove in silence towards the lakeside manor. I ignored my phone as it rang repeatedly. If Dimon had accepted my rejection, I would have felt the bond break completely. Athena growled in my mind, but she was ready to face the world. Finally, Lila said, 'You should answer.' “Adrian’s worried about you." I sighed and put the call on speaker. “I’m driving, Adrian,” I said. “Hey, Tessa, he said with a smirk in his reply. “He told me what happened,” your dad said. He requested I take you in my pack to remove the rogue scent. You know I’ll do it, because I’ve always said you’d make a perfect Luna." I rolled my eyes, and Lila grinned. Adrian had always been the one she was crushing on. “Go through my territory before you go to the manor.” Adrian hung up and said, ‘My warriors will escort you.’” She smirked and leaned back in her seat. “You know, he’s hotter than Dimon." “Drop it, Lila,” I said, my eyes still on the road. We stopped at a gas station to stretch our legs four hours later. I stayed by the car while Lila ran inside for snacks. Alcohol preceded the stench of rogues as they spilt out of a nearby bar. One of them ogled my car, then turned to me. “Look at this beauty,” he said. “And look at this one. “New to rogue life, aren’t you?" I said flatly, “I’m not interested." The leader smirked. “I can show you a wonderful time." Athena growled as the animal was eager for a fight. “Walk away,” I warned. The man laughed until he saw me extend my claws, and his grin dropped. In fact, Lila returned just in time; they were just dropping the snacks into the car. She grinned. “Thirty seconds?" I smiled back and agreed, “Thirty seconds." We attacked before they could react. The rogues were dead in less than a minute. Athena slated with satisfaction. I climbed back into the car and said, “Let’s go before Adrian sends a search party." The sun set as we reached Adrian’s pack. Derek Woods, his head butler, was waiting for us. “Haven’t you been hunting?” Eyeing the blood on my clothes, Derek asked. I brushed past him and said something along those lines. His confidence dispersed the air soon after Adrian arrived. He smirked at me and said, “You look stunning as always, Tessa." I rolled my eyes—the first time in days I felt anything other than despair. Perhaps this new chapter wouldn’t be awful after all.
