A bulldozer had visited every house, leaving behind nothing but brick and rotten board. Shadows clustered together and then fled as she moved towards them, as though she bore a light. Suvi looked down and saw to her surprise that she carried a glowing prism in her hand. Its brilliant froth splashed against the fallen walls, laying bare the black gashes that had once been windows and doors. Within she saw the flotsam of daily living — a broken dish, a child’s toy, a lone and filthy sock. And beyond it all, a face.
