11. A Big Fat No!

"I thought we came to exercise. This creepy looking room, is obviously unfit for my presence." I commented as I peeped over Sapheme's shoulder. "What exactly is this exercise you speak of?" She asked. I rolled my eyes. I can't live with these bunch of idiots much longer. "When you do things like this..." I stepped out from behind her and did about five seconds of high knees. "And this...to keep yourself fit." I allowed myself to fall forwards, my palms slapping against the floor to stop myself from falling on my face. Grinding my teeth together, I managed to do my first push-up, then attempted to do another, but I fell flat against the floor when my limbs gave out. I quickly climbed back to my feet, pants leaving me. "The air must be heavy here, back in the human world I would've done at least twenty." I stupidly said, trying to lessen my embarrassment as I rubbed my aching arms. "Hmm." Gylador hummed, unimpressed. "that isn't what we came to do though." "It isn't? I kinda figured." I nodded with a straight face, but inside I was cursing myself for being so stupid. Judging by the weapons that resided here, this room obviously isn't meant for exercise, but most likely for combat training. So then, why am I even here? "Well then..." I trailed off, giving a vigorous wave, "I'll get going," I immediately got my feet moving towards the door, but Sapheme had to call after me the moment I was about to step out the door. "Sire?" I clenched my jaw in annoyance. Why can't she leave me be?! Reluctantly, I turned to her, forcing a tight smile. "Huh?" "Are you not going to train?" I shook my head. "I only remember agreeing to exercise." Disappointment immediately took form in her eyes, even Gylador seemed that way as well. But they should've known by now that I'm pretty much scared of everything. Telling me to train is like telling me to slit my own freaking neck. "Why do I need to train anyway? Don't tell me you're preparing me to fight in those wars you have going on?" "Maybe in the near future, but as of now, the only reason for your training is to turn you into a better version of yourself. You need to be atleast half as powerful as you were in the past. You can't be presented to them looking this...this human. They won't be convinced." Gylador explained. I chuckled humourlessly. "Can you guys really see me clearly?" I gestured to myself. "Because if you can, you'd know that one glance would be enough for them to know that I AM actually a human. Plus, do you plan on training me until horns pop out on my head?" I rolled my eyes. "Whether they want to acknowledge me or not is not my problem. I'll still be king, won't I?" The expression their face contorted into told me that I might've been a bit too confident that the answer would be a 'yes'. My jaw slackened in realization. "That's a big fat no, right!? So what the hell happens to me? I thought I was this Lucifer guy!" "You are, but a demon called Darkus, is sitting on the throne as we speak. After your death, he took over the underworld, flooding it with wickedness. Once Darkus finds out of your existence, he will try to kill you. Normally, he'd be sentenced to death for such things but if the majority of demons deem you unworthy as well and agree to his choice, you will most likely be killed in broad daylight and Darkus will be left unscathed after doing so." Sapheme said. That was when my composure deserted me. I paused staring off for a second as my mind processed her words. Then once everything clicked, I bristled, both at her absurd words and her annoyingly wary expression as she awaited my response. I watched her with gradually narrowing eyes, catching the way she immediately averted her gaze to the floor when our eyes met. She definitely wasn't lying. "Why are you just now telling me that I'm doomed to freaking die!?" Dread seeped into me in a slow, agonizing way and by the end of my sentence, my voice quivered. "Because we knew you would react this way." Sapheme told me. Unable to relax, I began pacing back and forth, my teeth habitually gnawing at my nails. I don't know if I momentarily lost my mind but I found myself tipping my head back as a chuckle left me. "You know, I was a loser on earth but I wasn't on anyone's hit list," venom laced my tone, "Yet you kept me here all this time knowing I'd die." Sapheme was immediately struck with guilt...Gylador however, seemed to feel no shame for his doing as there wasn't even a single emotion decipherable on his face. I shouldn't have expected any better. He was always one who was uncaring about any and everything. "Before we summoned you, we did not know that you were a human and it is not a must that you di-" "It is a must!" I cut Sapheme off. "I know my own strengths and weaknesses. I can't fight to save my life." "We brought you here with the hope of returning the underworld to the way it used to be. I will stop at nothing to get you back on your throne. I- no, we will not let you die, trust me on that." Gylador promised, eyes holding a certain sincerity that I could not question. I wanted to trust him. I knew I could trust him. But I didn't. If Darkus held enough power to kill me in the past and get away with it, then what would it take for him to kill me now? Right, nothing but the snap of his damn finger! ...And I didn't want such a tragic fate. I wanted back my old life, sure it was miserable and pathetic, but never had my life been threatened like this. I was always on the safe side...a cop but a coward, a man who had the mentality of a woman. Turning away from Sapheme, I fiddled with my tunic. "Take me back to my home, I want to go back." "Sire..." Soft footsteps approached me and I almost flinched when a hand loosely grasped my shoulder. "This is your home, this is where you belong. If you train and give it your all, then once again, the underworld will reside in the palm of your hand. No one would be able to defy you." I twisted to look at her, eyes indecisive. "But I—" "Please, sire." Gylador dropped unto his knees, the rest following afterwards. "We swear on our lives, we will get you back your power and with it, we will put you back on your throne." ...and that was all it took for me to reconsider.
