CHAPTER 4

1092 Words
Two weeks later Jacob spent days worrying about how he was going to get Amelia back to what they were before. At work, he was a shadow of himself once again, and with Amelia being in the same workspace as him, it felt like his heart was being punctured every moment that she was sashaying into the office. Amelia had stolen the shine even though he was the boss. Everyone kept turning their heads whenever she passed by the office environment. Her aura and smell were difficult to resist. Jacob knew that he had very little time left to get Amelia back to what they used to be because their project was going to come to an end. He spent his nights sleepless and thinking of approaches that he would use to finally woo her but he didn't even get a smile from Amelia after many tries. To make things worse, Jacob noticed that Amelia seemed to have moved on as his business rival, Oliver Jaxon, who also had a fashion company had gotten much closer to Amelia. Amelia and Oliver walked lost in their world, their eyes only for each other as they strolled hand-in-hand into Rodele Couture amidst smiles and jokes. The co-workers had curious stares on their faces as they turned their heads towards the love birds with questions written all over them. Amelia was lost in the jokes that she didn't know when Oliver had taken her very close to Jacob’s office. She quickly jolted into her senses. “Where are you taking me to, Oliver?” “Where else, Amelia?” Oliver responded. “To Jacob’s office of course. Your contract with him has ended and you have to sign the papers.” Amelia’s once cheerful demeanor gave way to a look of distress and concern. “I told you already that I don't want to see him. You can sign the contract on my behalf. After all, you are here as my lawyer, aren't you?” Oliver had other ideas. After finding out that Amelia had chosen to sign for Jacob’s company, he flew into the state just to get closer to her. As Jacob’s long-term business rival, Oliver wanted to humiliate Jacob and Amelia was the best way he could achieve that, knowing through spies that he had planted in Jacob’s office that he still had feelings for her. With time, Oliver’s friendship with Amelia strengthened and he got to know more about her relationship with Jacob. He would usually poison her mind against Jacob and make her see more reasons why she shouldn't listen to his advances. “Come on, Amelia. We don't have much time, we have to do this together,” Oliver’s words were a driving force as he persuaded Amelia to act with haste until she eventually agreed. The meeting was filled with a palpable sense of awkwardness as Jacob’s gaze was filled with pain and longing for his dearly beloved Amelia while she avoided his attention by all means, averting her eyes with a cold indifference. Oliver’s chest was puffed out and his shoulders squared in dominance as he snatched the document from Jacob the moment he signed his portion. Turning toward Amelia, he spoke, “Come on, sweetheart. I think it's high time we left here. This place reeks of a strange smell.” Amelia was lost, her cheeks flushed with discomfort as she tried to understand Oliver’s uninvited familiarity. Indeed, they were holding hands and sharing jokes not long ago but why would he call her his sweetheart? She ignored Oliver immediately and kept her gaze narrowed. At that moment, she seemed uncomfortable with the two men and just wanted to be alone. Oliver succeeded in getting Amelia off her chair and just as they were about to leave, he put his arm around her waist very close to her swaying hips much to Jacob’s disgust. “Don’t touch her like that!” Jacob snarled, his face twisted with unbridled rage as he darted towards Oliver, grabbing his offensive wrist and pulling him away from Amelia. Oliver’s face was set in a smirk as he barked. “Are you so jealous that you can't stand seeing your ex-wife who you so foolishly divorced with another man? Amelia has moved on so should you.” Oliver ignored Jacob’s fiery gaze and moved his feet as if wanting to touch Amelia again but Jacob shoved him harder this time, sending him staggering to the wall. “I said you should leave her alone. Are you deaf?” Jacob gnarled. Amelia’s eyes darted in confusion between the two men as they were about to start trading punches. She didn't like the way Oliver seemed to be passing his boundaries by touching her waist but she also wasn't expecting the situation to escalate. She quickly delved in between the two men, her voice small and shaky. “Guys, you both need to relax. I’m not in for all these right now.” Jacob’s eyes locked into Amelia as she delved into their midst. He then yanked her away and got her to the corner of his office, locking Oliver out. Jacob’s gaze was pleading and filled with emotion that conveyed his desperation and longing. “I have missed you, Amelia, please give me another chance. I promise I won't take you for granted anymore. It was a mistake letting you go and I regret it every single day.” Amelia brushed aside Jacob’s gestures with a harsh tone. “You had your time Jacob and you treated me like trash. Now you won’t leave me alone. I’m done with you, Jacob. That chapter is closed.” Jacob wouldn't give up. His voice quivered as he tried to make Amelia understand the depth of his feelings. “Just one dinner is all I ask, Amelia. Just give me the opportunity to show you that I am no longer the Jacob you knew me to be. Just one dinner, please.” Amelia’s heart raced with uncertainty as she tried to imagine the consequences of the choice she was going to make. She had vowed never to have anything to do with Jacob ever again but she knew that Jacob would keep pestering her. It was better to just get it over with anyway so that he would just get off her back. After all, it wasn't like she was going to fall in love with him all over again. Amelia’s lips quivered as she finally agreed. “Just one dinner then, no more.”
