Calliope
The air reeked of blood, smoke, and wet fur as I moved diligently through the infirmary, making sure all the injured wolves were cared for. Even as I spoke to some of the healers, I found myself glancing outside the door and sometimes the window, expecting just one person and that person was my husband.
The war had gotten more intense and Mireborn pack was winning against us. Our wolves were dying and I was worried about my husband. I had not seen him since he had left and I had not been able to communicate with him either. He blocked me off from the mind link and I would have felt that something happened to him, if not for his Beta Sigurd who kept telling me that he was fine and not hurt. Then why was he ignoring me?
“Are you sure that Ragnar is returning today? It's almost evening and he's not yet back." There was a frown on my face and the thought of something happening to my husband, sickened me.
“He will be back soon.” Sigurd replied with a curt nod of his head but his reply did nothing to ease my aching heart. Why did I feel that something was wrong? Something was not right in any way. And it was connected to Ragbar.
“Easy there. The healer will check the wound.” An injured werewolf that was trying to move caught my attention, and I quickly moved to help me, calling out for a healer. After the healer came, I walked away from him and moved to another.
I spent hours dealing with the wolves and making sure that they were in perfect condition and once it was evening, I went back to the palace. My husband was not yet back. Ragnar was the Alpha of Nightfang pack and I was his Luna. The people were the only ones that treated me as a Luna. Their warmness and smiles made me feel that I actually had a position. I just felt useless whenever I was with Ragnar, and I prevented myself from thinking too much about it.
I had already arrived at the palace, when Sigurd informed me that Ragnar was back and that his carriage had just arrived. I was beyond happy as I rushed outside the palace. Just to see my husband. A smile broke down on my face when I saw Ragnar standing by the carriage as he passed orders to the guard standing close to him.
“Ragnar.” I breathed out in relief that he was safe. He was barely injured and he looked just fine. Just when he heard my voice, Ragnar tilted his head and he frowned the moment he saw me.
I expected him to hug me or even smile at me, but he did nothing and it felt as if my presence alone was a disappointment. “Ragnar,” I called again and I kept my smile as I did not allow his first actions to affect me. Maybe he was probably tired from the war.
“What is she doing here? I thought you said she was busy at the infirmary. What is she doing here?” There was distaste in his voice and he uttered ‘she’ like I was a curse not supposed to exist.
“She just returned Alpha,” Sigurd replied in a low tone and Ragnar rolled his eyes and then he glared at me, as he smacked his lips hard, running his hands through his dark hair.
“The last thing I want to see right now is this thing. I already had a long day and I warned you not to allow me to set my eyes on Calliope. She makes my blood boil. Just the mere sight of her does!!” He deadpanned and my eyes bulged. Sigurd was just as surprised, but he said nothing.
“I'm sorry Alpha.” He apologized.
“Whatever. Keep your damned apology to yourself. Is the room ready? And what about the preparations that I asked you to do? Thalia is arriving soon and I want everything to be perfect. She loves her things to be in place. My bride hates stress.” I blinked, hoping that I heard wrong. But I just heard Ragnar loud and clear.
He had been so rude and what bride was he talking about? “Everything is ready, Alpha. The Luna will not find a reason to complain.” Sigurd said, keeping his professional tone and my eyes darted to him, pure shock written on his face.
“Good. Let my mother know that I'm here.” Sigurd slowly nodded before he walked away. I was still very stunned at Ragnar’s actions. I decided to talk to him after Sigurd left.
“Ragnar, I'm right here.” I reminded him in case he had forgotten.
“You should stick to what you are doing best, and that's smiling and staying quiet. Can't you read the room? I don't want to talk to you, Calliope!! Can you just leave me alone? I'm tired and need rest.”
“How can I leave you alone when you are not talking to me? I've been so busy managing the affairs of this pack, and you just returned and you don't even want to acknowledge me. I'm your wife.” My voice caught in my throat and it felt as if the world was tilting around me. Ragnar and I had been married for two years.
“Is that supposed to mean something? Can you just leave me alone? Get out of my sight Callie!!! I'm not in the mood to speak to you!! You annoy me!! Get out!!” He roared and I blinked in disbelief. Ragnar was getting angry out of nowhere and I had no idea why.
“You were talking about a bride. Thalia?” Thalia was the daughter of his gamma and she was fighting the war with him alongside other warriors.
“Yes. She's my new bride. We have gotten married, I have marked her and she is pregnant with my pup. Can you just go to the infirmary? That's only where you are useful. Leave!!” He roared and it felt as if I had been punched to the gut. He just said those words to me without batting an eyelid.
“You married her?” I whispered.
“Yes, I did.”
“What am I to you exactly? Huh?” I couldn't help but ask. He just returned and the first thing that he did was disrespect me.
“Nothing.”
“I'm your wife.”
“It still does not matter, Calliope. You're just a wife that's good enough to be used. Thalia is coming to this house as my Luna and you will treat her right.” He stated and then he began to walk away like he was tired of talking to me.
“I refuse to watch you have a second wife, Ragnar,” I yelled, not hiding the raw pain in my voice, and then he paused. He not only did not marry another woman, he got her pregnant. While married to me.
“It already happened. Get used to it.” He hissed in displeasure.
“I will not! I'm your wife and no Thalia will come here to take my place.” I stated and then I began to walk angrily to him, standing in front of him.
“It's either Thalia or me.” I was not someone’s second choice. He just returned and started acting cold and vague. I never did anything to anger Ragnar. I was always the dutiful wife.
“Obviously, I chose Thalia. Who do you think you are? You are filth!” I tried not to be affected by his words, but it affected me greatly.
“Then reject me. If you chose Thalia. Go be with her.” There was no way that I'd simp over Ragnar. My mother would welcome me with open hands if I returned back to the pack.
“You want to reject me?”
“Yes. I Calliope Kratos rejects you Ragnar Orion as my fated mate . I refuse to be with a cheat!” Ragnar never blinked at my words. Instead, he smirked at me.
“I Ragnar Oriom accept your rejection. You were never fit to be Luna.” I felt a painful tug in my heart and my eyes filled with tears. Not because of Ragnar’s actions, but because of the pain of rejection. The pain hit like claws to the heart. But I stood tall.
“I’m done here.” I turned to leave. His hand clamped around my wrist.
“You think you can walk away?”
“You belong to me. You’ll stay here as my slave, my disgrace. Run, and I’ll send the wolves after you. And they won’t be kind.”
“You will remain here. As my slave. Do you think that I'd let you go so easily?” He scoffed. “You will stay here and suffer. It's not as if you have a pack to return to.” He mocked, his voice low and chilling and I was about to ask what he meant, when he suddenly pushed me away and I fell to the ground with a thud.
“Leave and I'll find you, get my men to rape and behead you. Don't even dare me.” There was venom in his voice and he spared one distasteful look at me before walking away.
