Calliope
Darkwood Pack
Silence reigned, and I felt my heart beat loudly as I was so restless. Mate? How was that even possible? I rejected Ragnar days ago, and here I was in the north, my wolf screaming mate. A second chance, mate.
And why the North of all places? I had a friend here, a long-time friend, but that did not change the fact that the northerners and the southerners did not agree. It was also infrequent to find your mate in another pack. Either the relationship did not last and abruptly ended, or both parties would be killed, seeing they couldn't stay away.
I was still lost in my thoughts when Echo screamed. I quickly turned, but someone grabbed my elbow, dragging me out of my hiding place.
“I found some intruders.” He dragged us out and forcefully shoved us down to our knees. Now that I was out in hiding, I felt more on edge. My mate was near.
“Where did you find them?” Another asked, and while Echo whimpered, I just held my head low.
“They were hiding behind that tree. They don't look like they are from here. Could they be from the south, east, or west?” A guard asked meaningfully as lots of guards surrounded us.
“You are very bold for even thinking of coming here. You know you're not going to live.” One scoffed, and Echo began to cry, turning to face me.
“Princess, please say something. Where is your friend?” She tugged at me, but I did not raise my head.
“Princess? Friend? The northerners cannot be friends with a—”
“Stop.” That one voice sounded, and absolute silence reigned, and my wolf jumped. It was him, my mate. His voice affected me, and it held so much authority. It was my mate.
“Alpha, we found the intruders. Not from the north like you said.” Alpha?? Hearing that made me lift my head suddenly. Darkwood Pack only had one Alpha, and that was Knox.
When I lifted my gaze, I saw a pair of soft brown eyes. He wore black leather armor with an overflowing cape at the back. His brown hair was messy yet stylish, framing his face and softening his tough expression. His hairstyle seemed to reflect his personality—a mix of roughness and calmness.
“Callie.” His lips moved, and I was suddenly reminded of how much I missed his presence.
“Knox.” I breathed out, attempting to stand up, but the guards held me back down, pointing their swords at me.
“Knox, please, I need to talk to you.” I requested.
“Show respect to my name. It's Alpha Knox.” My mouth parted in shock at his words. Knox had always been this soft-spoken mysterious boy whom I enjoyed his comfort a lot.
“Can you feel it?” I was sure that he could feel it as well—our mate bonds. I was barely holding my wolf in, but Knox looked so calm and collected.
“Bonds can always be severed, Calliope. The bond of our friendship was once severed; I don't see no reason why this one can’t.” He did not want the mate bond, which is good because I did not want it either.
“I understand and I agree with you. But Knox, I need your help.” I stated in a grave tone.
“Knox,” I called in a more serious tone. “I need your help. Please, help me.”
“Come with me.” He finally said after the silence stretched for so long. I breathed out in relief, standing up to my feet. His guards gave him a look, but Knox ignored them and gestured for me to follow him instead.
We were still outside his huge pack gate and it was very late and cold. I desperately needed a warm bath to calm my head and think.
“I can only assume that you need my help with your pack. I still can't believe the rumors I heard about Shadowcrest. The land of slaves? What happened to you? You changed since you got married, and…. Where is your husband? What do you need my help with?” Knox had always been soft-spoken and this was the longest that he usually spoke.
“Ragnar and I broke up. We severed the mate bond.” Something flashed in his eyes as I told him. But he was quick to mask it with an expressionless look.
“That explains the mate bond. You can't be my mate, Callie. Not only will I not accept it, but my people will never accept a Southerner as their Luna.” He stated and I slowly nodded my head.
“I don't want the mate bond too. I'm done with anything that has to do with love. We can both reject each other but I need your support, Knox. I have no one. Mom is dead, father is dead, and my brothers. My pack is gone and my husband betrayed me and declared me a rouge. I need to get my dignity back, Knox. I need to make Ragnar pay.” I told him, my voice stern and anger flowed through my veins.
“And what part do I play in this?”
“I need your alliance, Knox. We are friends and—”
“Were. Correction Callie, we were once friends.”
“You will not get my alliance, Callie. I cannot help you.”
“Help me. I will think of a way to deal with all of this. But for now, help me. For the sake of the genuine friendship we once shared, say yes. It's just me and Echo.” I informed him and his eyes darted to Echo who was still kneeling.
“She’s an omega who watched Ragnar kill her father and raped her sister to death.” my eyes filled with tears and it took everything within me to hold them back and not let them fall.
“She insisted on coming with me.” I sniffled. “I want to help her get justice. I want to step up and help my people get the justice they deserve and regain their father's lost glory.”
Knox kept staring at me and said nothing. It was like different thoughts were going through his mind. He exhaled sharply and removed my hands from his. “I'm going to help you, Callie and it's only because of one personal reason. I will give you the help you want and I hope that you achieve your goals.” He suddenly said and my face broke into a wide smile.
“Our relationship as mates is not going to work and we are going to sever this bond. I would have done it now, but our pack has its own rules.” True. In Darkwood pack, you could only reject your mate on a full moon.
“The next full moon is a month away and we will sever the bond on that night.” I nodded, totally agreeing with him.
“Thank you, Knox.” I breathed out, relief flooding through me. I already got protection till I would be able to sort myself out. Ragnar would never step foot in here.
“You will stay at my palace with your friend and I hope you know what you are going into. Leadership is not as easy as it seems. Neither is war. That's the same thing—”
“….that took my family. I know. But you know that a leader never gives up. You also know that I will be able to take up Ragnar if I want to.” Knox slowly nodded his head in agreement.
In the Rank of the strongest pack in Luparia, Nightfang was the last. All the Alpha’s from the other packs were very brutal and Knox was just as brutal. Nightfang had still not won the war with Mireborn pack and there was no way they would win against Knox.
