My breathing was hard and fast as I tried to slow down now that I was hidden.
The noise, the distraction was everything Pete said it would be and when my hand was grabbed and then my body covered with a sheet; I almost had a heart attack. I was then pushed into some sort of tight space but I must have been covered because no-one commented on it.
I barely had time to grab my breath when there was a large blare of a horn and something sounded like it burst and a lot of people started shouting. When the person that had me stopped, I heard his gruff voice say they needed to get past and on that note; I felt four rough hands grab me. The covering over my head didn’t allow me to see anything but I doubt I would have anyways because it wasn’t even a second later that I felt my back hit against a wooden frame.
“Take it off darlin” I heard someone whisper “And breathe easy. We got you”
I didn’t know who this was nor had I ever met them before but I had a guess. My throat closed up, scared that the wrong people had gotten me when I heard him shout loudly
“Georgie, You gotta move man! We need to load these in the truck” The man said
Georgie! That must mean that this is -
“Sal, there’s blockage up ahead because of the car and that accident” Another voice said
Oh thank goddess! I was with the right people! I really wanted to cry and almost let out a sob. I held my hands over my mouth, not wanting to be caught now. It felt like it took hours but I knew it could have only been a few minutes for them to start moving again, my legs unstable as the crate moved - causing me to slowly slide down to the floor as I took off the sheet. It was dark with small pockets of light from the holes in the crate and I sat, praying to the higher power out there that all would go well
“Hey!” I heard someone shout “You need to open these crates and show us before we can allow them to be loaded”
Shit!
“That’s already been done” I heard Sal say “We ain’t doing them again”
“Who did you do it with?” the voice asked
It sounded familiar and my heart hammered when I picked up the slight lisp. Oh goddess! He was from the facility. One of the guards!
He must be here to try to find me! What was I going to do? My psalm started to sweat and my breathing picked up again
“I’ve checked then Jo” Another voice said
“You did? Every single one of them?” Jo the guard asked
He must have nodded
“I don’t know who you two are. The security here has always been Malcolm, Donny, Ron or Grace. We been moving crates with delicate bits from China to the antique store here for years. What were you expecting to find? Drugs?” Sal asked, his voice holding the
right amount of anger and annoyance
“Leave it Jo” I heard the other man say “We do random checks. That’s all you need to know
“Doesn’t seem to be random to me since all our crates have been checked. Boss ain’t happy that we had to open it. If anything had broken, it would have come out of your pocket sunshine” Sal said
I heard Jo and the other guard scoff and when the shuffling of feet sounded and Sal swore, I felt the crate settle more firmly and heard them start shouting. Oh goddess, were they fighting? I heard the other guard tell Jo to leave it and that they did what they had to and had to do the rest of the checks.
Did that mean they weren’t going to check and they still couldn’t find me? I hoped Pete and his family were safe and well. Although Pete told me how this would work, I wasn’t convinced. These guy’s were so shrewd. I almost let out a sound when the crate started to shake and move again. Sal and Georgie kept up a normal conversation as they walked.
“Hey Georgie, I think it will be easier to get the small ones in the front and then the bigger ones in the back. Means we can off load quicker. We still need to pick up the Blue Ivy Antiques collection too” Sal said
“No worries Sal. We only have three containers from them and we should be at the fourth stop by late afternoon. Once in, I’ll secure the lines” Georgie said
I felt myself shake at the hidden conversation. My crate was one of the bigger ones which they would put in the back. They would go to our drop off point where we would be meeting the pack members who were going to help me which would be three hours away and they were going to take all four of us there for safety!
I heard other noises outside the crate and the security announcement that all cars had now boarded the ferry. It went on to tell people to secure and lock their vehicles and to make their way upstairs to the seating area. I felt my crate be lifted and manoeuvred until I felt solid ground again where the crate was then shifted so I was now laying down and on my back. I continued to listen to the sound of more lifting and shuffling. It couldn’t have been that long when suddenly, the back of my crate shifted and a lock sounded. I saw two large brown eyes look at me and a cocky smile light up the rugged face
“Hello darlin” He said in a deep Scottish voice
“H..Hi” I stumbled
He reached down and grabbed my hand, helping me to sit up. It was then I was able to see that this crate wasn't a tight thin coffin-style crate but one of those big and long chest like container boxes that I saw in Lorna's house. The really big ones that people can fit into. I sat up properly but stayed in the box, surprised at how big and spacious it was. He smiled and nodded at me when I looked at him
“Sal” He said “There are fake panels around this whole crate and extra thick wood so unless you scream bloody murder, no-one should be able to hear you”
"What was in here?" I asked
"A Tibetan golden Buddha statue. Those fuckers are heavy. We had to use four other guy's to help us take it out of the crate and place it here - look" Sal said as he pointed it out
"Oh" I said, looking at it with awe
He then moved and placed a white bag inside beside me before running a hand over my hair and smiling
“Food and drinks. Try not to drink as much as unfortunately there no toilet in here” Sal smirked, his eyes laughing
I blinked and realised he was joking with me. I smiled, shy and a little reassured.
“You know the drill right?” Sal asked me
I nodded and he nodded back
“Either Georgie or I will be with the truck at any given time. We’ve been doing that for almost nine years so it won’t look suspicious.
Hang in there kid, we gonna get you to safety” Sal smiled “Here, the truck has been locked up and Georgie has secured it with ties so no-one can break in without us knowing”
He passed me a small wind up torch and the crate inside lit up. I realised the space was a little more flexible and spacious than I originally thought and Sal started pointing out what to do if my air pockets were ever compromised. I listened even as my heart thumped.
“Don’t worry. We have this covered and planned it for a long time. We protect our own” Sal said
“Y..You’re a wolf?” I asked, surprised
“Bear shifter. You can’t smell me because both Georgie and I use a herb to mask our scents. I better go. Get comfy and settled in. We can’t risk you coming out until we reach Glasgow” Sal said
My eye widened and he chuckled
“Don’t worry. We won’t secure you in the crate all that time. The next time the van will be checked will be just before we get to Glasgow, an hour before it actually. Between then and now, there will be two other’s who will join us. Humans. One of them has ihs teen daughter with him and we have a way to give you bathroom breaks so you don’t need to pee in a bottle” Sal laughed
I blushed, letting out a sigh of relief at that important question that was at the front of my mind. Sal moved back and I took the small cushion he gave me and put it against the lid of the crate and took the light blanket he gave me and placed it at the end of my feet which surprisingly didn't touch the end of the crate. I opened the bag he gave me and smiled when I saw sandwiches, drinks and water as well as snacks, crisps and sour jelly sweets. Sal gripped my shoulder and smiled
"From Lorna" Sal said "I'm going to bring back hot pie's as well as fish and chips, I know you like that too. They told us"
I sniffed, nodding my head and finally voiced my concern
"Pete and the family?" I asked
"They are alright. We all did our parts and even if someone looked at the security footage, they wouldn't see anything properly" Sal said
My throat closed up. But what if they could? What if they found out and something happened to them? I couldn't bare it!
“It’s ok little wolf. And don’t worry about Pete. He’s being taken care off, we have different shifters here keeping an eye on them; both ones he knows about and will talk to as he has done for years as well as one he doesn't know and who are keeping him and his family safe” Sal said “Now, I’m gonna go grab my coffee first. You want a hot drink with you're meal?”
“No thanks. I better keep the drinks to a minimum” I said quietly
Nodding once again, Sal walked away and opened a metal door and I saw Georgie standing there who lifted his arm in a welcoming gesture. I waved back, not sure he could see me. Sal closed the door, locking it as he spoke to Georgie about his drink. I heard the loud horn of the ferry and the announcement that we had left the port. I sighed, my heart still pumping fast; knowing we weren't out of the woods yet. I settle back against the cushion and sighed, the soft material against my back feeling good
I sent out a silent prayer to the universe to keep those at the facility safe as well as Josh’s and Pete’s families. I have no clue how most of the world works with so many gadgets and the way life is because I was taken so young and I could only hope that the right people will be with me soon and will help me learn.
As the gentle rocking of the boat started to make me drowsy, for the first time in a long time, while I was tense....I also felt myself relax a little. I allowed myself to think about those who were willing to help me and question's entered my mind. Were they all wolf shifters? Where the packs big enough to fight the facility? the two brother that I was going to meet, were they nice? What would they be like? Over and over, different thoughts and questions filled my head until one crept up and made me pause......the possibilities of a pack…of belonging to one and being free. Of being protected and loved.
It wasn't long before Sal came back and my mouth watered when I smelled the food and when he came into the truck and beside me, I took the hotbox of food from him and blushed when my stomach grumbled loudly. Sal had laughed and handed me the cutlery which I took gratefully and scoffed down the food. I didn't even know how hungry I was until he handed me a cold can of Irn Bru and I realised that I had demolished more than half of the fish, chips, tartar sauce and mushy peas. He then handed me my backpack and I gasped, realising that the next part of the plan had gone without a hitch. I pulled out a book and smiled, asking Sal about how he got it. He told me how they took the backpack and they did something called a 'switchero' whatever that meant, I just nodded my head. He told me that Pete and his family were fine even thought the guards from the facility were still onboard and checking cars and walking around.
I looked at Sal and smiled and I assured him I would be fine when he told me he would come in and check on me in a little while. As he left, I wound up the torch more and placed it onto the ledge of the crate beside me as I bunked down and opened the book.
For the first time, even though the guards were still outside and I was going into the unknown, I felt hope bloom inside of me, my heart steady as I felt conviction take hold inside....I would fight anf I would survive no matter what. I had to get help and if these brother's were the ones to help me save my pack and bring justice, then I wouldn't be afraid. I would trust all these people who are trying to help me and dig deep inside and be brave because failure really wasn't an option.

“Sir, she wasn’t in the car”
“Are you sure?” I asked “Did you check everything?”
“Yes sir. Even the blankets”
“f**k!” I shouted, banging my fist on the table “Have you still got eyes on them”
“Yes sir” The voice broke up before he came back stronger “There two tails on the father and three on the woman and child who are in the bathroom”
“Stay on them. If they so much as sneeze, I want to know about it” I said loudly before hanging up
“I want her found” I said, looking at the man standing in front of me
“She’s with them” Chris said strongly “They have just hidden her….cleverly, I might add”
“How? And how did she know to go to them?” I asked as I leaned back against my comfortable chair
“That’s still being investigated. Josh is being re-investigated as are most of the staff members including the good doctor” Chris replied
“That i***t wouldn’t have been the snitch” I snorted “he’s too desperate. If we can’t bag her…kill her” I said, picking up my tumbler of whisky and took a sip
“We can’t kill her. You know the rules” Chris spoke with confidence
“I will get the approval for the kill” i said
“From the council person above you?” Chris asked, eyes wide
“From the head honcho” I said smugly
Chris choked, his mouth twitching the only movement before his face went back to looking like stone
“I thought he didn’t get involved with….this kind of thing” Chris said quietly
“He will when he realises who’s involved as well” I said smugly
“Who? Chris asked
“Magnus” I said, pushing my seat back
“The rogue king?” Chris said with surprise
“But he’s not just the rogue king anymore” I said as I walked to my window and opened it
“Why does he matter?” Chris said with interest
I smirked. Shaking my head. I didn’t tell him.
“How do you even know he is involved?” Chris asked me
“Because our spies told us he was part of the conversation that Rashid. Annnddd - He is closely related to Alpha Simon” I said
“How?” Chris asked “He’s a rogue. He has no family”
“I don’t think that is fully true. But the point is….This b***h needs to be bought back or else s**t will hit the fan in a big way and too
much will be lost” I took the last swallow of my drink and walked back to my desk “Make sure you get her. Failure isn’t an option”
I laughed and laughed hard. Chris lifted his left eyebrow at me in question
“I never thought i’d be saying lines like a bad movie gangster” I laughed
“I’ll get going” Chris said as he moved toward the door
“Don’t fail Chris” I said
“I won’t. She’s there. Someone else is involved. Someone that worked hard to play us and distract us” Chris said
“Yes indeed” I nodded “Looks like hunting season has come early”
Chris nodded before leaving, his steps fading away. I lifted my phone and dialled my secretary
“Celia, get me an appointment with Rashid. Anything after lunch is fine” I said confidently
“Yes sir” She replied
I hung up the phone, my eyes straying to the picture of all of us that was hanging up on the wall - Of me, Rashid, Roland who was another councilman, as well as Rick and his two twin five year old boys; Jason and Ray and beside that little s**t was Terry…..my Terry. I poured another glass of whiskey before lifting my glass into the air and smirked as I toasted them before drinking it down in one large mouthful…toasting to their fall
