Chapter 1: Ophelia
I knew that when everything goes wrong within my life there is only one person that I really want to lean on. The only person who knows me better than I know myself, most of the time. I needed to call Adrianna, and I needed to call her immediately. The wrinkled paper that sealed my broken marriage’s fate crinkled in my hand while the bold letters ‘Divorce Decree’ stared back at me.’Just call Addison, she will know what to do’- that’s what I whispered to myself while I packed my bags. I pulled out my phone and dialed her number,” Ring.. Ring.. O!” She shrieked, excited that I had called her. Life had been getting in the way with us hanging out but somehow when we did get together it was like we never really separated. “Hey Addi.” I smiled, just saying her name brought some sort fo relief to my broken, bleeding heart. I sniffled. “Addi, I need help.” I whispered, trying to get my tears to dry up but they wouldn’t. “What happened, love?” She asked, I could hear her eating something crunchy in the background, that was the problem with Addison she is always eating. “Calvin finalized the divorce and I just can’t be here right now.” I whispered, hoping that the one person that would actually understand might have some ideas for where I could hang out for a bit. “Do you have any ideas about where I could rent like an Air BNB or something?” I asked, hoping that my luxurious friend might have some ideas. “Love, I am sending a car to pick you up right now and then you are going to pack up what you love and need, so you can come stay with me till we get you all figured out.” She said with such intensity that I didn’t even bother to question if it was really okay. “Okay, the car should be there within twenty minutes and I’ll be there too so don’t worry about having to move a bunch of things.” Addi said, I could hear the smile on her face. “Thank you addi.” I said, as graciously as I could. “By the way, the cost of not calling me sooner is having a trip to the salon, so don’t you dare come out in a pair of sweatpants or I will be dressing you myself.” Addison threatened, and I let out a light laugh for the first time sincerely. “Addi I don’t have anything, could you bring something if it’s not too much trouble?” I asked, biting my bottom lip and hoping that she would be willing to comply. “I got it. I’ll see you soon.” She said eagerly, hanging up the phone. I threw my phone on the bed and grabbed the very few things that I actually care about. I grabbed my forest green duffle bag and threw in some of my favorite sweatpants and hoodies with my necessities before I grabbed a box and nicely stacked some of my favorite books. I don’t know how long it had been when the doorbell rang, “I’m coming.” I groaned, running down the stairs as fast as I could. Everything about this apartment felt so cold. At some point I remember that my ex husband and I bought his place and promised that the sparsely furniture decorating the house was just a temporary, we promised to spend our lives filling it and decorated it. Addison is everything I always wished that I could have been born into, she was born into wealthy but not entitled type of money, she had rich blonde hair and green eyes with long tan legs and practically no stomach. She was standing at the glass front door, “Hey addi.” I smiled, opening the door for her while she held some clothes on a hanger hid behind a protective layer. “Come on, that guy won’t wait all day. Let’s get you prepped.” She grabbed my hand and dragged me upstairs. Once we were in my room,s he saw the box of books and my one duffle bag, “Is there really nothing else that you want? This isn’t even enough to satisfy my parents?” She asked, hesitantly while I threw my clothes on the floor and unzipped the protective garment bag. “If you really need to grab an extra box, than you can box up some of my old journals underneath my nightstand.” I shrugged. Letting the grey sweater dress hang off of my body while I put on the black sheer pantyhose and some chunky black platform boot heels. “I’m all done.”I smiled, looking at my best friend. She smiled lightly at me. It wasn’t the type of smile that made me sad because she was looking at me like I was dog missing three legs btu she looked at me with enough empathy that made me feel like I might survive this. “Okay, come on. We have so much to do before dinner.” She groaned, taking my hand while I threw the duffle bag over my shoulders and grabbed a box and Addison grabbed the other one. In the time that I have known Addison when she tells me that I have stuff that I need to do before I ceratin time I have learned to just go with it and ask questions later. Once we got to the big black SUV, we handed the boxes off to some scary looking driver who was eager to take them from us and then we got into the backseat of the car, “Okay, so you said we have stuff to do, what do we need to do?” I asked, completely breathless. I don’t know how Adrianna can look so small and not be completely huffing and puffing from that box. Am I that out of shape? “Yeah, I am taking you to my Salon and then we are having a family dinner.” She sighed, looking at her nails like they are the most interesting thing. “Okay, I can do a family dinner.” I smiled, putting on my best happy face. She slid something up between our backseat and the front seat, “Okay, O tell me everything that happened.” She said, grabbing my hand and looking at me like I was everything to her. So, I finally broke in front of my best friend and I told her everything from the minute that I liked him. I told her about how cold he was to me, I told her about how he couldn’t care less about me, I told her how hard I fought to try and stay with him, I told her about his complete indifference while I suffered alone in silence. “O, you deserve so much better.” She rubbed my arm and hugged me tightly. “I know.” I whispered, wiping a tear away. For the first time since he decided that we would be separating I actually believed that I deserved better. That was the magic of Addison, whenever I have been with her somehow I come back to my senses. Somehow she makes me see something that I didn’t see before.
