Chapter 3: The Vanishing Friend
The hotel hallway felt colder than before.
After that whisper — “Half Night has begun…” — no one had said a word. Their footsteps echoed in the empty corridor, swallowed by the silence.
Smit walked ahead, his eyes blank. Jini stayed close behind, shivering.
Then—another whisper.
Soft. Distant. Chilling.
“Did you hear that?” Keri asked, spinning around.
There was nothing but an old mirror at the end of the hallway — tall, cracked, and covered in dust.
Pole pointed. “Look… the mirror.”
They stepped closer.
In the reflection… they saw five people again.
The same fifth figure — tall, shadowed, unmoving.
Jini’s voice shook. “Who is that?”
Before anyone could answer, the lights flickered — and in a blink, Keri was gone.
Just… gone.
No sound. No warning.
“KERI!” Smit shouted, running forward.
Pole kicked open door after door, searching every room nearby. Empty.
Only silence.
Near the mirror, a book lay on the floor — worn out, pages yellow.
Smit picked it up.
A single line was written in old, scratchy ink:
> “One will vanish.
> One will change.
> One will remain.”
Pole whispered, “He didn’t disappear… he was taken.”
Jini looked at Smit — and froze.
His face was still.
But in the mirror… Smit was smiling.
A cold, watching smile.
“Maybe he was chosen,” Smit said quietly.
And his voice didn’t sound like his own.
