Zach's POV
I sighed as I looked at the documents on my desk. There was a lot going on and it was giving me a headache. I have been in my office since the moment I walked in, in the morning. I had to miss lunch because I felt that having a break would mess up my train of thoughts and ideas on the current issue.
I didn’t have to look at the clock to know it was the time for me to leave this building. I had already dismissed my PA and I was sure I was the only person currently working in the building. I closed my laptop and packed some files in the briefcase. After having everything I might need, I left the office and headed to the elevator. My office was on the top floor of the building and this floor had only three main offices. My two best friends were the ones in the other two offices.
I stopped walking when I heard a voice coming from Charles’s office. I opened his office door and saw him talking on the phone. There were many files on his desk that even passed the lot that was on mine. He smiled at me when he saw me and continued talking on the phone. I sat down and waited for him to finish the phone call. From the way he talked, I knew he was talking to his dad.
Charles was a werewolf and his father was an alpha. He was not a soon to be alpha as his elder brother DJ had that title already but Charles was a soon to be CEO of his mother's company. He left the werewolf world to learn how to manage business from me. I was an expert in the field and his parents made a good choice by sending him to me.
"Working late I see." I looked up at Charles when he spoke up. He was done talking on the phone and now he was organizing the mess on his desk.
"Yeah but so are you, which is a very rare thing to happen." I said and he shrugged. We remained silent with only the papers making sound.
"My little brother is coming to live with me for a while." He said after sometime and I nodded. I guessed that must be what his father was talking to him about. "I'll have to look for a bigger apartment first, so he will be living with my mother's best friend and his family."
"I told you to look for a big apartment but you always refused." I said.
"I had no reason for a big one. This time I have a reason." He said shrugging again.
His little brother was an omega and his parents liked to keep him close. Having to send him here must only mean that things were going bad in the werewolf world. I've known about werewolves since I was little. I don’t know in details about what happened but my great grandfather made an alliance with an Alpha long ago. Since then, when we needed their help, they aided us and we did so when they needed our help. Our family has been in the protection business for ages and we offered so many services that’s how we found ourselves mingling with supernatural so much and mostly werewolves.
The recent problem that I was working with the werewolves was about missing omegas. We were not physically involved yet but I knew that was about to change as the cases kept growing. I was doing my homework on the issue which was the whole reason I was stuck up in the office. I had to be ready for when the wolves would call for my involvement.
I left the office with Charles after he was done sorting things on his desk. My phone beeped as we were in the elevator and when I checked it, I found a new message. My heart started racing with nerves as soon as I finished reading it.
'Daddy, when are you coming home? Mum is here.'
"Shit." I breathed, barely audible but Charles heard me. He was a werewolf after all.
"What's wrong?"
"Scar is home with Shane." I gritted out in anger.
"Then we better hurry up." He said and as soon as the elevator opened, we rushed out to the car. We got in my car and the driver drove away. The only problem now was the distance from my office to the house. It was a 40 minute drive and it wasn't even 10 minutes but I was fed up already being in it.
We didn't talk to each other as Charles was busy texting on his phone and I found myself thinking about Shane. He was my five year old son, very smart just like me. Scarlett was Shane's mother but I banned her from seeing him because of her bad behavior. Shane didn't like Scar too even though he called her mum but I knew he didn't like her. Shane was mute and it’s sad to say I've never heard my son talk before. I taught him how to use a phone and that's how we communicate when I was away. At home, we used sign language to communicate.
The long 40 minutes passed by and when we reached my house, I didn't wait for someone to open my door as I did it myself and ran to the house. Charles was right behind me and we entered the living room together.
I found my son smiling and when I looked at who he was with, I sighed in relief as the anger dissipated. It was my other best friend Janelle. She was making these funny faces and I knew she was trying hard to even earn a smile on Shane. Shane was a closed off person and the only people whom he showed some sort of affection were just the three of us. He was a difficult kid to please and that's why I left him home and not school. No one liked to stay with a kid like him and he was better off himself, waiting for me to come back from work.
"Hi little one, I missed you too." I said while embracing Shane who ran to me when he saw me standing in the door way. I comforted him, wanting him to feel safe and let go of any fear that Scar's presence might have brought on him.
The house maid told me he already had his dinner, so I carried him to his room. It was already passed his bedtime which was at 9pm but now it was 10:38pm. I bathed him then he wore his pajamas as I went to collect a book in the library. I got the book and went back to his room where he was already in bed, waiting for me to start reading tonight’s chapter.
It didn’t take him long and I switched off the light after he went to sleep. I had read the chapter to him and waited for him to sleep after I was done reading. I joined my friends who were in the game room. I picked up a beer bottle that was on the ground and sat on the couch, enjoying its contents.
"You are not supposed to be drinking that." Jane said but I shrugged and continued drinking my thoughts away.
"How did you get here? Did Scar came or not?" I asked her.
"Of course the b***h was here. I took care of her and tried my best to comfort Shane." She informed and I grabbed another bottle, downing it in one go.
I didn't understand why she came here after telling her off a year ago. I was sure she wasn't coming back which made me wonder why she was back now.
"How did you know she was here anyway?" I asked Jane and she pointed at Charles.
"I got a text from him and since I was already near, I stopped by." She said and I sighed. I was about to take a fourth bottle but Charles took them away from me.
"No, Mr. CEO. That's enough for the night. Now off to bed you go." He said standing me up from the couch. I didn't argue with him and let him lead me to my bedroom. I was not much of a drinker and three beers where enough to get me drunk.
"Have a good night Zach." I heard Charles whisper after he had put me to bed. I didn't have the energy to say it back but just managed to smile and let myself sleep.
*****
I felt someone shaking me and so I slowly plied my eyes open. My eyes met the stunning green eyes of my son. He smiled at me and pointed to the clock on my stand. I immediately jumped up where I ended up down on the floor because of the sheets around me. I managed to get up and make my way to the bathroom but I stopped, turning back to Shane.
"Hey kid, wait for me in the dining room. I'll be right down, okay?"
He nodded and ran out of my room. I took a shower for a few minutes and then came out after brushing my teeth. I was running late since it was already past 7am. I wonder why my alarm didn't ring or maybe it did, but I wasn't sure. I finished dressing and doing everything I needed to do then run down the stairs to the dining room. I found Shane almost done with his food and I sat down to have mine. I failed to make conversation with Shane like I always do as I concentrated on finishing my food. A tap on my arm made me look up from my plate to Shane.
'Can I go with you today?' He signed.
I paused just looking at him, surprised by his question. He didn't usually ask to go with me but today he was asking. I remembered Scar and then it clicked. He was asking to go with me because he was afraid that her mother will come again when I'm not here. I smiled at him and nodded. It wasn't a big deal and I could take him with me and work just fine.
I finished eating and carried Shane to the car. After I secured him in his seat I drove away from the house. I didn't want anyone to drive me today but I knew the guards must be following me to work in their car. As a CEO there was a lot I needed protection from and the alliance with the werewolf king brought so many enemies. I was capable of taking care of myself but I needed the guards as well.
I pulled up in my private garage and took a private elevator to the office floor. I walked towards my office with Shane and we found Jane and Charles standing there.
"What are you doing on my office door?" I asked.
"We were just checking up on you." Jane stated and I rolled my eyes. I wasn't a baby who needed to be checked.
"I'm fine, now leave."
"Whatever you say, Mr. CEO," Jane said and left. Charles followed me and Shane inside the office. I looked at him questioningly and he scoffed.
"I'm not checking up on you if you are wondering. I just wanted to say I'll be leaving sometime later to greet CJ. He'll be arriving in the city today."
"That was fast; I expected he'll be coming days later." I said as I helped Shane on his seat.
"My parents forgot to call me. They were busy since yesterday was Roman's birthday. Which reminds me to ask," He paused and I looked at him.
"Did you send the birthday gift?" He asked and I shook my head no. I forgot to send the gift he got for his brother Roman. Yesterday was his 17th birthday and I was supposed to send the gift the day before yesterday.
"I'm sorry I didn't. I will make sure to send it today."
"You are not supposed to be forgetting something that important, Zach." He sighed and I apologized again. He was a serious man on anything involving his family.
"It's okay but don't send it home. Send it to the King."
"To the king? Why?" I asked.
"He got Roman yesterday so he no longer lives home. They are living together." He shouts since he was about to leave my office. The door close behind him and I remain with just Shane.
Roman was the werewolf King's mate. It must be the problem of missing omegas which has led to the werewolf king, Kenneth, to take his mate earlier than planned. His mate was an omega after all. He was supposed to take Roman at 18 years but he just turned 17 which meant a year earlier than planned.
I remembered I had some things to discuss with Kenneth so I set up an alarm to remind me in two hours. We had to discuss about the omegas and share information. I then texted Charles to take Shane with him when leaving to meet with his brother. I made sure Shane was occupied with something then I let myself get occupied with work. I had to clear something up before calling Kenneth. With that in mind, I started working.
