CHAPTER 9 REMEMBRANCE A few days after the incident, Lisa listened to the sermon as she sat on the hard benches in the pew of St Dominic’s Church in Camberwell. The nave echoed with sniffling and crying. She sat next to her friends and watched Johnson rise and head to the front of the church. Stained glass windows lined the building with its arched openings on either side. Flowers adorned the altar and pews. Candles cast an ominous glow over the casket of Tina Smythe. Johnson shifted his posture as he held out a crumpled piece of paper and read out a eulogy in honour of his mother. Lisa fought back tears as she listened to his heart-wrenching speech about a brave woman who loved her son completely. He struggled against his own tears.
